Took a nice little trip to Cheorwon on Sunday with some friends and Mrs. Marmot.
This is the Seoul neighborhood of Pyeongchang-dong, as seen from Mt. Bugaksan’s Palgakjeong Pavilion.
Yep, it’s the iconic Nodongdangsa—the former Cheorwon headquarters of North Korea’s ruling Workers Party of Korea—a battle-scarred, Stalinist skeleton and a poignant memorial to the horrors of war. The light fixtures here suggest it is sometimes lit up at night, and with little in the way of civilization up here, it’s apparently a great place to photograph the stars, as Kim Sungjin proves here.
Quick thanks to John for driving us around today.
PS: Photos post-processed with Aperture 3. One day, I might become a millionare and buy a copy of Photoshop.

How does one get up there via public transportation? The last time I looked into it, the Gyeongwon line was the easiest way, though it seems to have closed sometime last year.
Well, hopefully, service on the Gyeongwon Line will restart at the end of the month:

Otherwise, take Bus No. 39-3 from Jeongok Bus Terminal to Sintan-ri, and from there get on the bus to Cheorwon (which passes the Nodongdangsa).
Thanks, Robert.
Love the area, go up all the time – was up in Hwacheon last week. Why not buy a car?
I’d have to learn how to drive one first.
While my concept of composition is still in its infancy, I love the framing of the last picture. I was in Seoul this weekend and really fancied getting some skyline shots of Seoul from Namhansanseong fortrees, like the ones you did not long ago. Sadly, time wasn’t permitting but I got some decent ones from N Seoul Tower.
