Toetmaru Doenjang Yesul

I’m not a huge fan of Insa-dong restaurants — too touristy and overpriced, IMHO — but when they’re good, they’re real good. A good example of this is Toetmaru Doenjang Yesul, a popular eatery in an alley just before Insa-dong Crossroad. Run by poet/photographer Park Jung-sik, this lively place specializes in Hamgyeong-do gang doenjang, a very thick, rich soy bean paste stew. The most popular item on the menu — and the one you see above — is the doenjang bibimbap: a bowl of rice, into which you mix the stew and some other veggies. A very hearty dining experience, and at 6,000 won, a reasonably priced one, too.

Hey..this looks absolutely delicious and now I'm hungry even though I just had breakfast an hour ago too. But it looks like that jigye will do damage to your inners. Was it as spicy as it looks or is it just very colorful?

Not spicy at all — but heavy for doenjang. Which, of course, is a good thing.

    Dear Robert,

I always enjoy your photographs. Food is inviting too even though I can not smell them.

    Thanks,
