Korea’s Foreign Workforce Percentage Second Lowest in OECD

According to OECD stats released Sunday, a total of 198,000 foreign laborers legally reside in Korea. This accounted for 0.8% of the total workforce, the second lowest percentage in the OECD.
The OECD average was 8.6%, more than 10 times that of Korea’s.
There are some caveats to this — firstly, the stats were based on data [...]

Misuda Panelist Meaza: Racial Discrimination Severe

On a recent episode of Misuda, Australian panelist Kirsty Reynolds, married to a Korean, talked of racial discrimination against Asians in her home country, which provoked a tearful response from fellow panelist Meaza Eshetu of Ethiopia, who described the severity of racial discrimination in Korea against black people. According to Meaza, Korean students have [...]

Obama — The Invisible Man in the Ghetto of Seoul

English teacher, writer and Democrats Abroad ROK member Scott Soper asked me to post the following contribution here on Ye Olde Blog. I guess I have no reason not to run it, so here it goes. If you enjoy it, great. If not, well, comfort yourself in the knowledge that at least you’re not Georgian. [...]

Korea Herald on Blog Commentary

In the Korea Herald’s Expat Living section, there’s a pretty big piece on expat bloggers, in large part sparked by Brian in Jeollanam-do’s troubles. It has interviews with a number of bloggers, including yours truly.
Give it a read.

If I Were Seinfeld DVDs, Where Would I Be?

A reader requests:
Long story short, does anyone know where or who may have some Sienfeld DVDs. In Seoul, Korea?
I have no idea. Anybody know?

Deadbeat (Foreign) Dads

I’m not sure if an increase in “deadbeat dads” is at all related to the growing number of foreigners residing in Korea, but still, establishing some sort of legal mechanism to get child support from fathers who flee the country doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
Whether that’s legally possible, of course, is a different matter.

Canadian Model Killed in China

A very unhappy stay in Shanghai for a 22-year-old model from British Columbia ended when she was killed during an attempted mugging.
Looks like the foreign model scene in Shanghai is more than just a tad sleazy, too.

Damn, This is Ugly

Parents of a 4-year-old are accusing a British kindergarten teacher of sexual molestation, the British International Kindergarten may sue the parents for libel, the Gangnam District Office of Education will sanction the school, and the Korea Times is there to cover it all.
Ugly, ugly stuff.

Where’s the (American) beef?

Does anyone know of any steak or burger places that are serving American beef now? I sent an email to the Nashville restaurant in Itaewon this morning but have not gotten a reply yet.
I am looking for a place to have a lunch event on a Saturday.

Andy’s untimely demo post

(NOTE: I started working on this on Monday but didn’t have the time to complete it until today.)
I was at a couple of protests last Saturday. I won’t go into too much detail here (that has already been covered by several blogs already). I just wanted to add a few thoughts on what I saw. [...]

Bye Bye, WaiWai

Poor Ryann Connell.
The Australian-born journalist behind the Mainichi Shimbun’s WaiWai, Connell spent years trawling the depths of Japan’s tabloid trash to bring English speakers the best (or worst) the island nation’s “sports papers” had to offer.
But not anymore.
In the past month the 39-year-old has become one of the most reviled figures in Japan, where thousands [...]

Police in the Sultanate of Ansan have arrested members of an Afghan-Pakistani drug manufacturing ring that had tried to smuggle some 12 tons of a chemical used in the processing of heroin to the Taliban militia in Afghanistan:

Yongsan Garrison open to the public today?

UPDATE: Another source confirmed that the base is open to the general public. Also, I will not be going after all since we now have enough volunteers to cover the whole event.
ORIGINAL POST: I got the following email last night:
Referencing gate access: My understanding is that US citizens with proper IDs (passport [...]

‘No Contempt for Koreans’

I really like Mike Breen’s last column in the KT… the only problem, I can’t tell if he’s taking the piss or not. Admittedly, I’m a bit slow on the uptake.

Just in Case You Are Assaulted…

Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency, in cooperation with HUFS, will publish a guidebook for foreigners on how to act when they fall victim to crime (or perpetrate crimes themselves).
The first edition will focus on domestic and school violence.

You Know, I Think This Foreigner-Too Protest on July 5 is a Terrible Idea…

but at the same time, what’s good for the goose…

Brian’s Troubles in Jeolla-do

Brian discusses his travails following an alleged incident of cyber-aggression.
Quite an ugly tale, with a number of cautionary elements to it.

Lots o’ Foreigners to Protest Candlelight Demonstrations: Hanguk Ilbo

NOTE: Yes, I realize this story has something to do with Andy’s post below. I have no idea what’s what — all I’ve done here is summarize what I’ve read.
The Hanguk Ilbo reports that with tensions between protesters and anti-protest protesters on the rise, hundreds of resident foreigners will be attending an anti-candlelight protest demonstration.
The [...]
