Stephen Colbert and Rain finally had their dance off.  According to yesterday’s Korea Times:

Top Korean singer Rain met his match during his visit to Los Angeles for the promotion of his movie, “Speed Racer.” The 25-year-old singer appeared on top comedian Stephen Colbert’s show “The Colbert Report.”

Video here.  Dialogue obviously kept to a minimum to avoid any “Engrish” moments.

No word yet on whether or not the singer turned actor had a chance to visit any of the local restaurants to chow down on some LA Galbi, given that some of his fellow celebrities would “rather gulp poison.”

In usually quiet Chungcheongbuk-do, local prosecutors have booked a 40-year-old National Assembly secretariat staffer for having sex with prostitutes in China.

The staffer is accused of employing the services of hard-working bar girls in lovely Qingdao, China some three times since 2006.

All this would have probably have passed without incident had the accused not posted nude photos of his conquests on an Internet website. After posting the photos, he was arrested by police.

Police are expanding their investigation into other individuals who posted photos on the website.

Actor Choi Min-soo apologized today for punching an elderly (in his 70s) Itaewon restaurant owner in the face and then trying to flee with the victim still on the hood of his car.

At a press conference yesterday, Choi said that no matter what he said, it wouldn’t be an excuse.

The incident took place on April 21, and Choi was booked — but not detained — for assault on April 23.

Choi also noted that he’d apologized to the old man when he was booked, and that reports that he’d also threatened the man with a weapon were mistaken.

Here’s how it went down (according to the Kookmin Ilbo) — Choi was driving his open-top jeep from the health club at the Hyatt Hotel, but traffic was bad, so the actor starting swearing. Loudly. The owner of a nearby galbi restaurant heard him, and admonished the young man for his behavior. Angry, Choi got out of his car and repeatedly punched the poor guy. In the middle of the day. In front of a lot of witnesses.

Using his cellphone, the victim called the cops. Choi then got back into his car and tried to flee. The restaurant owner, however, tried to stop him by climbing onto the hood of his car. DEATHPROOF! With the man still hanging on the hood, Choi took off, driving some 200—300 meters. The tough old bastard wouldn’t fall off, however, so Choi reportedly pointed a knife at the guy, threatening to kill him (reports Choi denies, see above).

Police finally arrived, but they let Choi go when the victim said he didn’t want him punished. A couple of days later, however, Choi was called into Yongsan Police Station. The old man, meanwhile, was not seriously hurt.

Oh, and Choi will be costaring with Robert De Niro and Andy Garcia in the upcoming film “Street of Dreams.”

A Seoul court has found guilty a school headmaster who was caught using his cell phone camera on a bus to take photos of a skirt-wearing high school student’s thighs.

The bench ruled that although the photos were taken in a public place and the girl’s thighs were exposed by her own choice, the photos could still provoke feelings of sexual desire or shame, and therefore it was illegal to take them against her will.

The headmaster, who was returning home after a night of drinking one night last October, snapped the photos of the legs of the student, who was sitting next to him wearing a short one-piece dress. When she protested, he pushed her hands and hit her in the face.

For this, he was fined 1 million won.

The defendant told the court he was trying to take a photo of his face, but accidentally photographed the girl’s legs since the bus was shaking.

The court, however, didn’t buy it.

The suspicious death of a Chinese actress and model has shocked both South Korea and China. Tan Jing (Cyworld blog), 24, was found dead at an apartment building in Guangzhou, China earlier this month. Local police initially believed she was a sex worker. The death has caused a stir among South Korean and Chinese netizens as staff of a South Korean airline were reportedly in the apartment when Tan died and police are uncertain of the exact nature of how she died.

Police received a report at 3 a.m. on April 5 from the apartment building’s janitor and a neighbor in an opposite building that a bleeding, half-naked woman was hanging from a railing between the 12th and 13th floors of the apartment building in Dongfeng Plaza. She was said to be wearing a bra and pink shorts and her hair had been let down. Police and firefighters recovered the body with a rope.

The Korean angle?

After an initial investigation, police believed that Tan had been pushed by three men from the bathroom window of a 30th floor apartment, which had been rented by a South Korean. Some reports cited a neighbor as saying that he had heard an argument at around 3 a.m. between people speaking English and Korean, in which a woman shouted, “How can three people pay one combined fee?” A security guard at the apartment building also told police that three foreign men and a young woman, all drunk, entered the building early in the morning.

Police in Guangzhou, however, say the death is a suicide.

In Busan, a gangster doing life who was let out of prison for treatment after he intentionally infected himself with HIV is back in the pen just a month and a half later for violating the terms of his release.

The 46-year-old former underboss of the Busan-based Yutae gang, identified as Mr. Kim, was sentenced to life in 2002 for instigating murder. Figuring that life with AIDS on the outside was better than life inside, he began several attempts to contract HIV from an AIDS patient who was imprisoned at the same pen. From Yonhap:

Following a series of bizarre acts, including cutting his arm and the AIDS patient’s arm and placing them together, drinking the patient’s semen and injecting syringes of the patient’s blood into his arm, he succeeded in infecting himself when he tested positive for HIV.

Kim believed an HIV treatment was just around the corner, and that if he didn’t develop a full-blown case of AIDS right away, he’d be fine. Police, however, suspected he’d infected himself intentionally, and actually added charges.

Afterwards, Kim was moved from prison to prison until he developed a serious fever in February. He was diagnosed with AIDS-related tuberculosis, designated an AIDS patient and sent to a hospital in Busan — where he had family — for three months of treatment.

For the most part, he did his best to comply with treatment, but now finally on the outside, Kim couldn’t resist taking a trip to his old stomping ground in Busan’s Dong-gu neighborhood (or at least that’s where people believe he went)… without telling his parole officer first.

So on April 15, back to jail he went. Police don’t believe he engaged in additional criminal activity during his excursion, however.
