Japanese Foreign Ministry Homepage Says Bad Things About Korea, Countermeasures Urgent

The JoongAng Ilbo (Korean) reports that authorities need to do something quick about the Japanese Foreign Ministry homepage’s section on Korea. More specifically, the “Safety” section, a travel advisory posted for the benefit of Japanese travelers going to Korea, is overly negative.
It’s so bad, in fact, that it could give Japanese tourists the impression that [...]

In honor of the approaching Italian National Day.  One of Korea’s earliest encounters with Italy also became the excuse that a visiting Italian nobleman used to try and open Korea to the West before the Americans did.  The story is often mentioned as a mere footnote in historical texts - bare of anything but the [...]

Korea Still Dependent on Japan

Economically. How so?
South Korea has a perpetual trade deficit with Japan. To be sure, Korea has had a trade deficit with Japan for pretty much most (if not all) of the 20th and 21st centuries. As of April 20th, Korea’s trade deficit with Japan stands at about $10.3 billion, a billion more vs. the same [...]

More on the Korean Kamikaze Pilot

The whole story was a little weird in the first place. It just got weirder. There actually appears to be some history behind it and the story is a bit more complex then one would think off hand.
It turns out that Tak Kyung-hyun’s Japanese name is Fumihiro Mitsuyama and he’s the subject of [...]

Putting the Food Aid Where the Mouth is

Today’s Washington Posts asks if the new LMB administration will really put its food aid where its mouth is and choose principle over hunger in the North.
Does President Lee withhold food aid that may prop up the government of the North or will he help avert a possible humanitarian crisis? Choices.. choices…
Whereas some may [...]

And now for something (not so) completely different

If you ever needed proof that great minds think alike, Joshua at One Free Korea and I both used Monty Python references in pieces published yesterday about the ongoing (and ongoing and….) talks on NK nukes.

LMB Summons his Inner Lord Palmerston

Nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests:
President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday called for a pragmatic diplomacy to maximize the national interest, adding, “I don’t agree with such concepts as pro-American or pro-Chinese policy.”
Lee made the remarks to Foreign Ministry officials at a ministry policy briefing. “If their national interests are [...]
