손석희’s interview with 정몽준 on JTBC

정몽준, Saenuri’s candidate for the position of Seoul City Mayor has been on the news after he was interviewed by 손석희 on JTBC.

He has been in the news following the Sewol disaster due to his son’s statement only a few days after the tragedy that “the President is having a hard time due to 미개한 국민성 (uncivilized/primitive national character of the people)”.
He has also been in the news due to his wife being charged for campaigning for himself (somebody in a current political position) a violation of election law according to the election committee.

Here he is being interviewed, and answering questions on this issue, as well as some other issues. 손석희 says he would not question him on his son’s statements, and 정몽준 says “well saying you won’t is the same as (being questioned)”

On the charge against his wife, he says that things are not so clear cut – the rules of election, and also says that the way the media is treating it, it’s as if “his wife has distributed money-filled envelopes”. He then goes on to add “she asked people to vote for “the candidate that would win” and did not specifically mention his name.”

He also calls 손석희 “우리 손사장님” in a sarcastic manner during the interview when he is in a pinch.

What comes across very strongly is his character as well as the level of intelligence during the interview.

Nope. I still have no interest in voting for him or any Saenuri candidate. If that makes me primitive, then so be it.

    Saenuri

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

My last sentence might be misleading in that I did not specify which way the scale of strong impression is tilting towards.
But then, it’s meant to mislead maybe, because I understand it’s subjective.

  • RElgin

    Unfortunately, I concur.
I actually have met him before and I really did not like his staff though he seemed alright.

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

He really reminds me of Dubya.

A reminder how one can be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth and get all the right education and still manage to end up with less than half of what the world has to offer within one’s constitution (although he is famous for being a 서자 and Hyundai is looked down on in the 재벌 family world for being rough-in-the-neck)
His sentence endings in Korean when he speaks (rather than ending 니다..but in -여 not even- 요 e.g. 이랬어여, 저랬어여) brrrrr…

  • Sumo294

I agree his lack of manners is appalling.

  • dlbarch

Chung Mong-joon is so gobsmackingly self-important and entitled that he makes 2MB (or Mitt Romney, if one prefers) seem like a genuine man of the people by comparison.

Chung may have a resume to die for, and a sycophantic press (both in Korea and at Forbes) to carry his water, but the idea of yet another Chung (much less another prince of Hyundai) using the Seoul mayoralty as a stepping stone to Chong Wa Dae is something out of a Third World potentate, not a rising democratic regional power.

Of course, it speaks volumes that Korean democracy is being hijacked by a corporatist-centered political process that dispenses with any pretext that the chaebol are not the real powers of Korea, Inc.

I suppose this is an improvement from the days of Korea’s military junta, but Korea risks becoming a real outlier among the OECD elite of truly advanced, first world countries.

I could not find Mr. Chung MJ’s son’s national characterization of Koreans that much different from what Ms. Yuna often writes at TMH.

  • SalarymaninSeoul

So wait he has the qualifications (“resume to die for”) but he isnt qualified? Because he is a “prince of Hyundai”? He ain’t no prince. Has he led his company well? is HHI not a thriving company? Has he had failures in the many EXECUTIVE positions he has had? And what of the current mayor? He is qualified even though he has NO RESUME, he has NO EXECUTIVE experience? Because he is a “man of the masses”?

  • SalarymaninSeoul

Sure, and youre constitution is shining through loud and clear…gossip gossip gossip. Sounds like a conversation for the 미용실 with your girlfriends. brrrrrr….

  • redwhitedude

Makes me wonder what this guy was doing when the nation is mourning over the ferry disaster. You would think at least when he is running for mayor of seoul he would at least show himself mourning the victims in the memorials. Instead he makes show of cleaning up urinals.

  • redwhitedude

No you are not primitive it is him(chung) that is primitive.

  • redwhitedude

Ulsan needs to secede and be called Republic of Hyundai and crown this guy president for life.

  • redwhitedude

I wonder if he realizes that there was a “national” disaster with a ferry.

  • redwhitedude

I guess the whole country is just that a beauty salon.

  • SalarymaninSeoul

    pitiful, eh?

  • eddienj

I’m no supporter of Chung. but 손석희 is the 사장님 of JTBC news division.

Thanks to Hyundai, Ulsan is a city with thriving industry. Hell, thanks to Hyundai Ulsan is even a city. There wasn’t much there before Hyundai. What is your beef with Hyundai? Are you off your Samsung/Samsux soapbox you pitiful moron?

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

    Welcome back then.

  • SalarymaninSeoul

    Thank you.

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

I have to say, any good feelings I had towards him (of course I hadn’t heard him speak, but based on his looks and background..like David Beckham, should not speak but just pose) went away when I saw that he’d changed political sides on the eve of the election, of what was to be a very close one.
    I mean, really..

And now he has the gall (during the interview) to accuse the *contending candidates* of “dropping the news on the same day as his important announcements” for maximum effect.

I have an acquaintance who is having an affair with a married man/her boss.
She thinks everybody at work is having an affair, even if she sees two people together doing the most innocent thing.

  • redwhitedude

Her moral compass must have been shot.

  • Sumo294

Supply and demand . . . women want someone taller, stronger, manly, successful, with property, more educated and from a better family. Hmmnnnn . . . I wonder how many guys fit this bill? So Yuna is friends with a girl who is a husband stealer and a home wrecker . . . but she is of course–loyal to her friend–welcome to Gangnam.

  • redwhitedude

I’d be even messier if she were bisexual.

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

I don’t know if she had one to start off with.
She seems to harbour less than 0 guilt towards the wife.

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

    Kangnam.

My acquaintance is Japanese and her boss German, and we are talking about Germany.

    Incidentally from http://www.toytowngermany.com/wiki/Divorce_in_Germany

Since 1977 it doesn’t matter in Germany in a divorce case whose fault a divorce was, there are no punitive damages awarded. So as far as German law sees it, your husband/wife could have had 10 affairs or for that matter you could have had them, it will not affect the treatment by the court or the alimony awarded or who the children will live with (in 95% of cases the mother)!

I *know*! Who would have thought!!!

  • dlbarch

I’m currently off the market…but all that’s still VERY good to know!

    Thanks!

I prefer “jackass,” thanks. But since you mentioned Samsux, it gives me an excuse to post this current Vanity Fair piece:

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

Yes, but 손석희 referred to 정몽준 as 정후보님 (candidate Chung) because in the interview, each person has the role they need to be referred by, and 손석희 was the 앵커.

If I’d been 손석희 I might have been tempted to switch to “우리” 정 회장님 (after all he still is the head of the Korean Football Association) in the interview.

  • redwhitedude

Maybe she is “working” on a promotion that somehow got denied to her?

  • A Korean

Imma ask the question that dopes here are too afraid to ask.

    Is she hot?

  • Sumo294

    How about pics?

  • SalarymaninSeoul

The obvious question is, why are women cheating so much more than men?

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

Well, he’s the only *cheater* in this case because he’s the one cheating on his wife, at least that’s how I tried to see it when I started listening to her stories..that he, as the typical much older, boss, and husband is in the wrong when he succumbed to her blatant approach..but it’s starting to dawn on me that she has no guilt and in fact hates his wife for not making it easier for them to shack up.

Another thing which is of concern is the workplace regulations, if he tries to extend her contract or create a job for her without coming forth with the relationship then that is a problem apparently, but again they seem to be lying their way around.

  • Seoulgoodman

Well, I must be quite the catch since my wife is smart, educated, very attractive, and quite wealthy (i.e. you don’t get women).

  • Seoulgoodman

She may have no guilt, but she also has no self-respect.

  • Sumo294

About one in five women are geared like guys and choose mates like guys do.

  • Sumo294

A husband stealer and home wrecker is a person with low morals. If you are an ethical person why choose to be friends with her?

  • yuna_at_marmotshole

Most women are a little crazy in my experience, and also I need some drama in my otherwise happy life.

I was subtly trying to get her to see the wrongs of her ways by inviting her to watch a recent Korean drama that was quite OK which dealt with affairs and the effect it has on people around the adulterers but it turns out she is now watching it to get pointers on why the wife is behaving the way she is behaving and to be strategic.

  • Sumo294

Is not the victim here the wife? The poor woman is obviously trying to keep her marriage together and now she has to deal with an unscrupulous home wrecker and husband stealer. Women who do such things make it very hard on their fellow women. I wonder why you would continue your friendship with someone who is obviously of such low moral character?
