Iceland considers porn ban

God, I hate these right-wing Christian nutjobs.

Oh, wait.

Apparently porn is only the latest target.

(HT to kuiwon, who probably has slightly different feeling about this than I)

when did Iceland put a man on the moon?

  • Wedge1

You elect watermelons and lesbians, you get a porn ban. The key is they know what’s best for everyone else like any good progressive.

Any enemy to porn is an enemy of mine.

As they say, politics is one giant circle. Go too far left or right and eventually you end up in the same place: totalitarianism.

Most visited website in Iceland is now going to be BringThePornBack

It’s one of the dirty little secrets of progressives that they too often
make common cause with the authoritarian right. The Temperance movement
a hundred years ago and the anti-porn crusaders of the last generation
or so. Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows.

Let’s try some new things. Porn ban could be good for people. Let’s just wait and see. Something new and interesting.

Recognizing the infirmities of many people especially in America (though unsure about these Icelanders), I am not for a complete ban. I do think analogizing it to a drug (the orifice being the eyes and ears) may be helpful in discourse about the social ills possibly caused by this.

The social ills from drugs are actually from the prohibition, not the actual drugs. The rate of drug addiction was and remains low. The real ills are from the War on Drugs: the violent crime created by the war, the lives ruined by overzealous meddling in the lives of people by law enforcement and prosecutors fighting this sham of a war. Pornography’s ills are miniscule compared to the ills which will be created by any prohibition, just as prohibition on alcohol resulted in far worse ills that the actual alcohol.

But even more important is the issue of how far you go to violate the individual’s access to things in the name of some “social good.”

  • SalarymaninSeoul

Thats just a dirty little secret of any shade of statist. The use of he power of the state to force people to do and to live how the one with the power envisions things.

Lovely quote: “”The Nordic countries are leading the way on women’s equality, recognizing women as equal citizens rather than commodities for sale.”[35] After the decision was made she was hailed by her fellow feminists with Julie Bindel claiming Iceland has become the most feminist country in the world”

    1. One of the reasons I would never live in those nordic shitholes. No matter how “successful” this Nordic model of 60% taxes and overblown welfare state is, the sheer size of government eventually means the government thinks it knows everything and whats worse, it has the means to enforce its utopic visions. In these nordic shitholes the government has its tentacles literally in every orifice of your body, it can fuck you in multiple ways, and it does.

    2. If by quality they mean destroying a woman’s right to use her property, her body, as she wishes, then thats one distorted vision of equality for women.

  • SalarymaninSeoul

“Iceland is taking a very progressive approach that no other democratic country has tried,” said Professor Gail Dines, an expert on pornography and speaker at a recent conference at Reykjavik University. “It is looking a pornography from a new position – from the perspective of the harm it does to the women who appear in it and as a violation of their civil rights.”

Indeed, a very progressive viewpoint. ONLY a prog could see women exercising control over the use of their bodies as a violation of their civil rights. And only a prog could see the curtailing, and eliminating, the freedom to use one’s property as one sees fit as promoting one’s civil rights.

Its like some opposite land. Are progs this messed in the head?

Right. Which is why I said not a complete ban. The error of the temperance movement and the drug war was in the total ban, which in turn created a greater social ill than the alcohol itself. In the latter case, after the lifting of prohibition, we were able to tackle the social ills of alcohol by education, making bar tenders look out for their customers, and et cetera (although I do think the age of 21 is too high).

We already limit individual access to things in general. Think about proscription drugs, nuclear weapons, nitrous oxide systems, for instance.

So what, pray tell, does an incomplete ban on porn look like? We already limit, as you say, access to things, like child porn. So, let’s talk adults: what should adults not have access to other than child porn?
