According to Money Today, the authorities’ crack down on child porn—which is really a crack down on all illegal porn—is leading to a rejuvenation of the legal “ero film” industry.

Well thank God for that.

Though “simple possession” of child pornography is not a crime in Japan, production, reproduction, distribution and possession for distribution purpose of child pornography are all crimes in Japan. Actually, a lot of high school boys are arrested for taking a nude picture of his girlfriend because such an act is production of child pornography. Consent of the girl is no defense, because a child is not matured enough to make such a consent.

Try to buy child porn in Tokyo. You may not find one. Anime and manga are not child pornography as defined by child porn treaty (Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography). The purpose of the treaty is to protect children from exploitation. Since there is no victim involved in Anime or manga, they are not child pornography. Tokyo governor Ishihara Shintaro once tried to ban Anime and manga that depicts pornography of a “non-existent child”, but the bill was turned down because Tokyo assembly thought freedom of expression is more important than protecting a non-existent child.

Anyway, the golden rule of Korea seems well alive. When something is wrong, blame Japan.

“…but the bill was turned down because Tokyo assembly thought freedom of expression is more important than protecting a non-existent child.”

If that was actually the motivation of the legislature, how interesting is it that an elected body could actually parse, standby, and explain to the masses such reasoning. The U.S. has become demagogued by nanny conservatives who can peel away freedoms with a good anecdote.
