And on the gaming front: Spec Ops: The Line

I’d heard great things about Spec Ops: The Line, so I picked a copy up at Yongsan.

Having finished the single-player campaign, I can now safely declare it the single most depressing gaming experience I’ve ever had.

I mean that in a very positive way.

It’s brilliantly scripted, highly atmospheric, and presses all the right literary and cinematic buttons. It sets out to make you feel like shit, and occasionally clunky mechanics aside, it succeeds beautifully.

Could it be more depressing than my second Skyrim character, when I decided to make a switch from the goodly mage, and start killing as many innocent people as I could right from the beginning of the game?

Highlights:

Killing the single mom upstairs, then heading down to find the daughter asleep in bed with a piece of taffy set on the nightstand. Mom’s last present.

Convincing the farm boy’s old man to buy him armor so he could go out adventuring, watching his enthusiasm when I say he can go with me… then immediately leading him to a barren field, hearing him say “You’re such a great friend to me” one more time before slaughtering him to charge up my evil sword.

This was such awesome, awful role-playing that I had to create a pacifist character next, to cleanse my darkened soul… of course, starting off a pacifist game by repeatedly drowning and healing yourself to get your Restoration up seems a little unhealthy in itself…
