‘No Gangnam Style,’ Neon Bunny, 1970s Mongolian rock & Yang Hyeon-gyeong

OK, I thought this was pretty funny.

Andrew Sullivan posts a video by Korean singer Neon Bunny. The post also includes a email slamming Max Fisher’s piece in The Atlantic on Gangnam Style (HT to reader).

From Gangnam Style we go to Ulan Bator Style. This blogger looks at Soyol Erdene (HT to reader), Mongolia’s first rock band. Just judging from the two songs linked, they don’t suck, either. Winners of a gold medal at the 1973 World Festival of Youth and Students in East Berlin. “For Anti-Imperialist Solidarity, Peace and Friendship,” yo.

The female vocals of Soyol Erdene reminded me of singer Yang Hyeon-gyeong, whose cover of Kim Gwang-seok’s “너무 아픈 사랑은 아니었음을” is absolutely beautiful:

If anyone’s interested, that whole 야광 토끼 album is fantastic. Nary a dud on it. Also very much digging the new album from The Koxx.

Oh, and there’s a great subreddit for finding good (non-K-Pop) Korean music here: http://www.reddit.com/r/koreanmusic/

That Andrew Sullivan piece link had this:

Seo Taiji – the biggest thing in modern Korean music, from 1993

Haha, the guy was a shameless carbon copy rip-off of B.Real

    Cypress Hill for little Kimberlies.

…And then a rip-off of Smashing Pumpkins, and after that a rip-off of Korn…But he’s a musical genius, or so I’ve been told.

As for Psy, yeah…His father’s rich (brought up the irony of that about a month ago, beating Mr. Sullivan to the punch) and some of his songs are rather misogynistic (and he’s taken some flack for it in the past). But, that doesn’t mean that the message isn’t deceptively subversive. Sure, it isn’t Gainsbourg’s Les Sucettes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3RwVOSpcVo) (trust me, if you don’t know French, learning the language just so you can get the double-entendres in this song is well worth the effort), but you gotta give credit when it’s due.

Is this song of Psy’s less deceptive in its subversiveness? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BR1McEEUDo&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLH0f9eNFpbPxgjWSaemKluA

I don’t think that being being from Gangnam gives him less authority to critique it.

    Comedian Hwang Gi-Sun’s Haja style:

I’m sensing our good friend The Korean has been shooting some emails to Mr. Sullivan.
