NOTE: Installing Disqus Comments

Going to give Disqus another try—they’ve made some changes to it I want to check out.

It’s going to take a couple of hours to export all my comments to it, though. Sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: Still uploading the comments. Might be a couple of more hours. Feel free to comment in the meantime, though—your comments will be saved.

UPDATE: Disqus is behaving in a rather frustrating manner, with effed-up comment counts and missing comments. Trying to figure it out. If I can’t rectify it today, I’ll abandon the effort. Will let you know when things are finished.

UPDATE: Disqus import behaving in an infuriating manner now. Going to give a try to Livefyre, which they use at a number of big sites. You might not want to comment until I’ve imported everything and seen how it works, unless of course you’ve already got a Livefyre account or want one anyway. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, but really, this is for the best in the long run.

UPDATE: Livefyre ran into import issues, too. Shit. On advice from email, comments, Facebook, etc., I’m going to give Intense Debate a try, but frankly, I think I’m going to end going back to Disqus and hope they figure out why I can’t import comments made since July 16, 2011 (the last time I tried Disqus, coincidentally, we seems relevant).

So far seems to work. I was hoping you’d install Disqus. There are some comments that I’d like to reply to or like that are way up on the thread. It is much easier than replying, “Hey,#15!” As for the export–it likely will crash a lot. But each time you restart it, it gets further and further along. And even if it still gives you trouble, well really, not every comment is sacred.

Thanks. I just finished the import, but there are a lot of things missing. Running a sync now.

I like having my all my comments across the internet in one place.

Cool layout, new comment system, and a few hours of moratorium on the comments. What’s not to like? :)

love the new look and the commenting system.

Whatever happened to Charles Tilly?

7 Sperwer Accipiter July 9, 2012 at 4:15 pm

The side bar with the useful access to recent comments seems to have disappeared from the desktop version of the site on mobile platforms.

8 Sperwer Accipiter July 9, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Perhaps he fapped himself into oblivion?

9 Sperwer Accipiter July 9, 2012 at 4:19 pm

So does the new Disqus move comments up and down the food chain on the basis of the relative number of likes and dislikes they attract. That seems like a bit of bother open to fiddling.

That’s actually a template issue. Will address when I’ve got some time.

11 Avaast July 9, 2012 at 9:16 pm

I got voted down for reminiscing about Charles Tilly? Jeez, I can’t wait until we have another Birdshit Rocks ‘debate’ on here!

12 Sperwer Accipiter July 9, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Comments seem to take 15-20 minutes to go live on Disqus? Probably a good thing, even if it doesn’t inhibit the deliberately offensive

Say what you will about Charles Tilly. He spoke Korean and was more informed about most of the issues than most trollers on the Hole.

Agreed.

15 qiranger July 10, 2012 at 2:37 am

Yay! Seems to be doing a good job updating things on the fly!

It took a while to figure out. Hit the spoked wheel icon to create an account.

17 pawi kirogii July 10, 2012 at 8:52 am

I Like being able to use any account (I have multiple) when making a comment….

and WOW!! people can now edit !!!

I like the fact that we can edit our posts.

I like that we can edit our posts.

Don’t like that number of comments doesn’t show up on selection pane on mobile version.
Have to go in to the post each time to find out if anything changed. Whereas previously could see from the number count whether it was worth gong into the post again.
