Nice pamphlet here – http://www.mofa.go.jp/region/asia-paci/takeshima/pamphlet_e.pdf

(#10 – even the USA agrees that it remains under Japanese sovereignty)

I didn’t realize that Japan has urged Korea to take the issue to the “International Court of Justice” several times – but Korea refuses).

sorry Brendon – I couldn’t help it.

But it’s nice sometimes to view how the “other party” across the Sea of Japan/East Sea argues the case.

Here, we often only hear Koreas side of the argument, the pamphlet was a good read last night, letting me see the “official argument” from Japan.

” 14.4% of Black Americans are unemployed. Hope and change.”

I think you need to look at some more historical data. If anything the data shows that not much has changed and that Obama’s policies are not slanted in favor of any particular race of people. It sucks that such a high percentage of black Americans are unemployed but it is in line with current unemployment figures resulting from the global financial disaster caused by Bush. It will be a slow recovery. Thank you President Obama for pulling the USA out of the mess Bush created.

“The unemployment rate for Black Americans has been roughly double the number for Whites since 1972, Black unemployment reached a particularly high spike in 2011.  The unemployment rate reached a stratospheric 27 year high in August 2011 at 16.7% — easily on of the highest sectors of unemployment in the U.S.   It was the highest rate for Blacks since Ronald Reagan was in office.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAAHAHHAAH stop, stop please, I can’t breathe!

I meant “here” as in those of us who have spent a good part of our lives in Korea and currently still do live in Korea.

Not “here” as in the USA where you don’t-want-to-live-in-the-motherland people live.

Do you really hear a lot of the Japanese side of the argument in the USA?

I thought all the advertisements in New York square and the USA newspapers were Korean paid-for Koreans side of the argument?

11 thekorean July 7, 2012 at 11:46 am

HERE, in the comments page of MH, vast majority of what I hear is the Japanese side of the argument.

But if you want to play word games, sure, I will play along. HERE, in my office, I have never heard of the word “Dokdo” uttered, much less the sides of either.

Not sure what your point is….are you trying to blame Clinton? LOL…Deregulation was in full swing decades before he went in office…did he contribute to the problem, yep, probably. The killer though was having a greedy president like Bush who didn’t have the intelligence to see how is equally dumb and greedy friends were looting the country.

What did President Obama save us from? By almost anyone’s opinion the largest financial disaster since the great depression.

The Korean wrote (#11):

HERE, in the comments page of MH, vast majority of what I hear is the Japanese side of the argument.

That is because Japan is the only side that has an argument. All of Korea’s historical arguments have been shot down, which is why you don’t see anyone making them anymore.

Korean newspapers used to report, at least, once a week on newly discovered old Korean document or map they claimed to be new evidence for Korea’s Dokdo claim, but the Korean documents and maps they posted ended up being more evidence for Japan’s claim, instead. In other words, Korean newspapers were giving more ammunition to Japan, which is why they stopped posting Korean documents and maps. Even many of Korea’s Dokdo Web sites have gone underground by limiting access to their discussions, fearing Japan will get even more evidence from them.

Instead of reporting on the history, Korean newspapers are forced to report on such meaningless things as Dokdo drawing contests, Dokdo concerts, and Dokdo swim meets. Only occassionally do they post a “Japanese” or “Western” map and say it supports Korea’s claim; however, close look reveals that maps do not even show the islets.

Koreans have lost the Dokdo argument, which is why they are now focusing on the Comfort Women.

Creo69,
I personally think Obeme can do more but he is not doing it. Because he is afraid. He is too sissy.
HE should be slamming down the Fed for not doing enough and he should propose series of “stimulus” actions.

But he is not doing any of it. He and Bernanke are waiting for the economy to get worse before they announce the correct action.

Nobody wants to be proactive. And, that is why we are in a mess where we are in. People in the know told politicians that they have to something about these high risk investment schemes. But, no politicians moved proactively.

Obeme’d better be careful. He could lose this election.

I, a democrat, may vote for Romney.

Maybe even put your picture in Shinto shrine and worship you as a god.

” I personally think Obeme can do more but he is not doing it. Because he is afraid. He is too sissy.”

Risks and foolishness is part of what got America into a mess in the first place. America doesn’t need a president who is going to enact a risky plan to bring the USA back to greatness in one term. We need a president who can steadily bring America back on track without anymore major catastrophes. President Obama is that person. Everyone wants problems solved immeadiately now days. That isn’t possible. The real blame is with the American people. Americans are physical and mental wastelands who no longer want to put out the effort to acquire the skills required to make themselves employable in this tech economy. Most employers now have jobs available. They can not find people with the skills to fill them.

Don’t try to win arguments in support of Korea by insulting/ridiculing or THREATENING other people – that is not how arguments are won in modern times.

If you wish to argue for / or against the Liancourt Rocks, then give facts and an argument.

If you wish to argue for / or against the East Sea / Sea of Japan, then give facts and an argument.

If you wish to argue for / or against the Republicans / Obama, then give facts and an argument.

Insulting / ridiculing / threatening is just so Korean / lame.

As a Mandarin slang term, 250 (二百五 pinyin èrbǎiwǔ) is an insult meaning “stupid person” or “simpleton”. The expression is based on bàndiàozi (半弔子 or 半吊子).

Year of the Dragon,

I do not want to convert anyone to my religion. I just present facts that Jesus is who He says He is. It is up to you to see the light. I am only a messenger. I have no power to make you a Christian. Only Jesus can.

And, He decides who are real Christians. I pray everyday that I am one of them.

Don’t use my belief to your advantage. Then, you will be judged by Jesus. He can send you to the Hell. So, be very careful. Of course, you are laughing now. But, are you so sure?

Dokto is just a small piece of rock. I really do not care if it belongs to Korea or Japan. There is no reason for many to die defending this small nothing. I do not mind Japan owning it, if it brings peace.

Nationalism is not good. People die because it. Just like racism.

By my just saying the definition, he can tell me the word without looking at the book. We still have 500 more words to study, which I plan to do before he starts 8th grade in the fall.

Excuse? He is doing his part. Americans have to do their part too. If people had the skills to fill currently available jobs the unemployment rate wouldn’t be an issue and the economy would be stronger. You can’t sit around waiting for the president to find a way for you to sit at home on your obese ass in your far too large home with your two SUVs (gas tanks full of cheap gas) sitting in the driveway. Maybe it is your religion that has led you to rely on a savior to come and solve all your problems. I got news for you…we are each our own savior. Jesus and Obama aren’t going to fix all your aches and pains.

37 Creo69 July 7, 2012 at 3:51 pm

“Did I read several months ago that there are ten applicants for every job opening?”

Do some more reading. People with degrees are fighting over Walmart jobs because they do not have the skills to even begin to apply for jobs based on sciences, tech and engineering. Americans were warned for decades that future jobs would be in these fields…they chose not to pursue them.

38 RolyPoly July 7, 2012 at 3:52 pm

If Obeme does not do anything to stimulate economy, he is done.

It takes at least three to six months for any stimulus to show in economy. So, if Obeme sits on the side line and let Ben play for his pals in Wall street, stocks will go down, down and down. Unemployment up, up and up.

TV will show sob stories about the unemployed and Obeme will lose. Just like Bush Sr. He thought he could win doing nothing. Obeme is thinking the same thing.

RolyPoly wrote (#36):

I do not want to convert anyone to my religion. I just present facts that Jesus is who He says He is.

For the past few weeks, my son and I have been reading the Bible thirty minutes a day, beginning with Genesis, not for religious reasons but just to know the content. I neither promote the Bible nor criticize it; I simply let my son judge it for himself, and so far he has been quite critical of it.

We are just finishing the last part of Exodus, which is pretty boring because it has been giving detailed instructions on how to build the Tent of Meeting (Tabernacle) and all the items used in it, including the Ark of the Convenant, Alter of Incense, Alter of Burnt Offerings, table, lampstand, and the garments worn by the priests.

It also talks about how to consecrate priests by using a special anointing oil that is poured on their heads and on all the items used in the Tent of Meeting. The recipe for the oil is 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, 250 shekels of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane, 500 shekels of cassia, and a hin of olive oil. The blood of a bull is also poured on the alter to consecrate it and prepare it for sacrifice. Arron and his sons also have to dab some of the blood on their right earlobes.

Aaron and his sons were supposed to slaughter a ram and a bull and pour the bull’s blood on the alter. They were supposed to take the fat and lining around the bull’s internal organs and burn them on the alter inside the tent. The rest of the bull was to be burned outside the camp as a sin offering.

Yesterday we read how God was so angry with the Israelites for worshiping the golden calf that He was ready to destroy them, but Moses saved them by reminding God of his promise to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Instead of destroying all of them, God had the Levites among them (Moses’ people)take swords and go through the crowd and kill about 3,000 of the sinners. My son thought that punishment was way tooo harsh.

Seeing Obeme’s presidency, I again appreciate how great Reagan was. He was a great liar, a strong leader, a man with vision..

He would not accept 8% unemployment. He would borrow, borrow and borrow. He would spend, spend and spend.

Four years are long time. With Obeme, unemployment rate will be still be 8% four years later.

“The Way”

Go out into Earth
Roll in moss, lick a pebble,
dance a circle round a tree, catch
a falling feather on your palm,
watch a turtle head thumb up
from pond to measure you-
smile greeting,
for this going out is going in,
in to your root nature,
for you are Earth, and if you are
to know yourself, you must know
the rest of Earth, and know too
that each atom of your flesh has been
since Earth has been,
and always has been shared
with all alive, and know as well
how in each live cell the spirals dance,
as spiraled star-dust coalesced
into the Sun and Earth
and eventually you,
for going out is going in

Lying is necessary because people do not understand economic principle. Like railwaycharm, they think saving money will make things better.

That is what Americans did during Depression.

Tea Partiers are another example of well-meaning people who will plunge this country into deflationary spiral.

Obeme is throwing this country into one. He is serving the cause of Tea Party. Ben Bernanke is not doing anything because he want Romney to win.

Romney will come into the White House and he and Ben will stimulate the economy. Obeme is too weak.

People want good economy. Yet, they do not want to borrow money in bad times.
Do you see a contradiction here? Have a cake and eat it too?

A president has to do the right thing – borrow money and spread liquidity – yet people do not want to. What does a president to do? Lie!
Like Reagan. Give hugh tax cut and spend hugh money in defense. Then, tell people that he would balanced budget. When the budget gives a big hole, borrow. Do this again and again. Then, the country become rich.

A great president!

Thanks, but no thanks. As I pointed out, those lies from the mouth of the wonderful Mr. Reagan…along with his letting the rich off the leash…helped get us in our current mess. To go down the same road of failure is to just repeat stupidity. This country was living off borrowed money and prospering on it for a few decades. The bill came due. No you can’t just erase it and start over as you so foolishly proposed. A few decades is nothing in time…it was a shell game and exposed as such.

Your theory of borrow, spend, borrow spend has already proven to be a serious failure. We would have to be a total bunch of fucking idiots to do it again.

This could be a big issue, because of questions of over-stepping jurisdiction.

Creo69,
You are so much like Koreans who denies the benefit the Japanese occupation brought. Like to have a cake and eat it too. It is always somebody’s fault never yours.

If you would have liked the America without Reagan. Go ahead. Have last fifty years without any growth. Just stuck at zero-sum game. All tech companies in Japan or in Germany. American universities, banks, companies all in 2nd rate. Best movies are made in China, India or France. America poor and 2nd rate country.

I like Reagan and hugh national debt. Because we are number one in everything. Only thing lacking was National Health Care. Obeme has done it. However, we need a new person to bring the country out of this economical funk.

That is what Christians believe in a nutshell. Jesus’ promise.

68 RolyPoly July 7, 2012 at 11:29 pm

KimcheeGI,

That is the big thing. This could blow up as big as “HyoSun and Misun” those two kids run over by the US tank.

Apologies by the base commander and the Head of USAF are due. If President Bush had done it, there is no excuse for these guys not to. And, handsome payoffs to civilians. And, they will keep their mouthtraps shut.

Finally, these MPs should be trained better. They are not only soldiers but diplomats in peace time.

Damage controls for now. And, maybe later some heads should roll.

69 Creo69 July 7, 2012 at 11:33 pm

” You are so much like Koreans who denies the benefit the Japanese occupation brought. Like to have a cake and eat it too. It is always somebody’s fault never yours.”

During the past couple decades I lived within my means…you are right, it is not my fault.

“Ifnyou would have liked the America without Reagan. Go ahead. Have last fifty years without any growth. Just stuck at zero-sum game. All tech companies in Japan or in Germany. American universities, banks, companies all in 2nd rate. Best movies are made in China, India or France. America poor and 2nd rate country.”

The foolishness of the last fifty years culminated in a financial crisis that made America into the 2nd rate country it is now. I would have prefered a little less growth and a much smaller national debt.

All in US of A.

72 jkitchstk July 7, 2012 at 11:57 pm

I knew it all along,
1. Korean parents are the best in the world
2. Korean children are the most spoiled in the world
http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2012/07/05/2012070501469.html
“Parents with a son sell their homes to raise money to buy an apartment where he can live with his bride, and parents with a daughter take out loans using their homes as collateral to pay for wedding gifts. Korean parents are perhaps the only ones in the world who feel obliged to take care of their children to that extent, and Korean kids are also probably the only ones in the world who think their parents are duty-bound to pay for their wedding and buy them a home.”

74 gbevers July 8, 2012 at 12:30 am

Does every little town and village in Korea now have a Rodeo Drive?

I do not think the incident at Osan AB will turn into a big problem because it is not a big problem and because no one was really hurt. Besides, by refusing to move his car until after he finished eating his chicken and by later taking as swing at one of the MPs, the Korean guy has some culpability. It was not a simple parking violation, the Korean man had parked within 500 meters of the front gate of the air base, which is a restricted parking area partly because of terror concerns.

If people can negotiate a solution to much more serious crimes, then I think they should be able to find a simple solution to this petty incident. Besides, Roh Moo-hyun is no longer President.

I guess you are one the few who are worse off after Reagan presidency.

I was in the US Navy as an officer because Reagan expanded Navy. It was my first real job (my graduate research position could be counted as education), thanks to Reagan. At that time, early 80s, jobs were very scarce. The country was just coming out of recession caused by Oil Embargo.

Reagan did not shrink the size of government (he lied to the US public). I have worked for the US government after Navy. Again, partly thanks to Reagan.

I am much better off after Reagan presidency.

Wealth did trickle down to most Americans. But, some missed it.

As for the incident in question, do you really think Korea will make a big deal out of a guy being handcuffed after he attacked a US military policeman? If the MPs were in the wrong, then they will be deciplined. The US government may even pay the 7 million won fine mentioned it the article, but I do not think anyone will go to jail.

There is a big difference between two middle school girls being run over by a US military vehicle and a guy being handcuffed for taking a swing at a US military policeman.

Today my son and I finished reading Exodus and began reading Leviticus, which focuses on how to worship God and make offerings. Today we read about the Burnt Offering, the Grain Offering, the Fellowship Offering, and the Sin Offering. Tomorrow we will read about the Guilt Offering.

When we read Leviticus 3:17, which says, “You must not eat any fat or any blood,” my son looked at me and said, “Filipinos eat fat and blood.” I just looked at him with concern and said, “Uh-oh.” Then, we heard thunder.

American Christians can be so insufferable. Why don’t you try being more like normal Christians for once? Religion is a personal belief and should be kept as such.

93 αβγδε July 8, 2012 at 11:24 am

baduk,

I find it interesting that with all your conviction you’ve never gone beyond am empty platitude about Jesus, hollow metaphysical pronoucements, a few trite praises, rehashed theologies here and there, but nothing of any substance, nothing distinct, all of which failures point to the undeniable fact that you have nothing, and that, no thriller, at the center of your faith is an emotional ‘tard, the same sort of retard lying at the center of the zealous faiths of all the other world’s major religions.

You love and know Jesus but you’ve never written a single thing of substance about him. Isn’t that interesting?

94 Creo69 July 8, 2012 at 11:47 am

” American Christians can be so insufferable. Why don’t you try being more like normal Christians for once? Religion is a personal belief and should be kept as such.”

Please..it has nothing to do with being American. I have Korean christians trying to force their great religion down my throat as well.

95 wookinponub July 8, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Since when do american pseudo pigs have ANY enforcement authority, over local nationals no less, outside the confines of the base? The footage I saw showed no punches being thrown. If there were, what did the aggropigs do to provoke it. If I’m dumb and happy eating my dinner in my music shop in the states, and a Korean MP walks in making demands, he’s going to fuck off or get punched when he gets physical. The mp’s were NOT threatened in ANY way until they blew WAY past their authority.

96 wookinponub July 8, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I’m corrected. I see shoving, but again, why? They still have no authority to threaten the locals, IN ANY WAY. They came to cuff the music store owner and haul him off, how are the locals expected to react?

According to a spokesman for the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US military police DO have the authority to restrain Korean civilians until the Korean police arrive.

To me it sounds like the Korean guy was being a jerk. He had parked his car illegally and was repeatedly asked to move it, but refused to do so until he finished eating his chicken. When he finally did move it, he was told that the Korean police were called and that he would have to wait until they arrived. That was when he decided to chase out his remaining customers and close up early.

The US military police were waiting outside for him with the intention of preventing him from leaving until the Korean police arrived. When he resisted, he was handcuffed.

The Korean guy claims that he was not planning to leave, but was simply going to wait outside with the military police, but that story sounds a little fishy to me. If his gibun had been hurt by the military police, why would he wait outside his store with them?

An investigation will determine the facts, but apparently US military police do have the authority to restrains Koreans until the Korean police arrive.

100 KimcheeGI July 8, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Gerry:
I hope you are right in that the hand cuffing incident won’t escalate. However, it has already been picked up by Voice of the People and other bastions of Korean journalistic integrity such as OhMyNews, and remember, it’s an election year. USFK is already in damage control mode so we’ll se how it pans out. BTW, have you been to Osan AB lately? That stand-off distance you mentioned hasn’t been enfirced for quite some time, esp since the AF decided to close the back gate.

101 gbevers July 8, 2012 at 3:55 pm

KimcheeGI,

No, it has been probably thirty years since I have been to Osan AB. Anyway, apparently the street is closed to parking only at night, starting at sundown, so could you be confusing daytime enforcement with nighttime?

I think part of the problem was that the Koreans involved probably did not realize the US military police had the authority to restrain them until the Korean police arrived and were indignant thinking the MPs had overstepped their authority. I read that the Korea police that arrived told the Koreans involved that the MPs had the authority to restrain them under SOFA, so if they didn’t like it, they would have to contact their Assemblyman.

Now that it has been made known that the MPs were within their authority and an apology has been given, I think it will die down, in spite of the fact that the “victim” has complained that the MPs had “live bullets” on their persons.

102 Creo69 July 8, 2012 at 4:26 pm

@46. I never said saving money will make things better. Are you that fucking thick? What I am saying is all that Obie has done is protect/pay-off his base and give more food stamps to the poor.
What needs to happen is to strip away all of the bullshit regulations that prevent the private sector from creating more jobs. What you fools seem to be lost on is government does not provide growth, corporations and small business do.
Obie has nothing but throw money on a fire, it has done nothing and your hero-worship is misplaced.
By the way fuck-sticks, just wait until you have to pay with real money for your hope and change.
For families with an income of $30K, you will pay $2.2K per per year. That is the multiplier. So for people who make a real living, we will be buying a small car every year. So go ahead and suck Obie’s dick, because next year he is going to corn-hole all of us.
