Canadian returns to Korea, admits murder of girlfriend

by Robert Koehler on January 19, 2012

From the Chosun Ilbo:

A Canadian has turned himself in to Korean police and confessed to murdering his Korean girlfriend three years ago. Police quoted the 38-year-old identified only by the initial S. as saying he decided to turn himself in because he was riven by remorse.
[...]
The woman was drowned near Dongjak Bridge on March 23, 2009. Police questioned the Canadian at the time, but he told them her death was an accident. He said she went into the water to retrieve a tennis ball and then drifted into deeper water. He said he pulled her out and tried to resuscitate her but she died.

To be fair to the coppers, that’s such a bizarre story, it’s hard to make up. The tennis ball was a nice touch.

Here’s what really happened:

The man now says he held the young woman tight and jumped into the Han River and drowned her by pushing her head under water when she tried to get out. He added that he committed the murder because she refused to marry him and he began to suffer from delusions that she would hire somebody to kill him.

So, basically, he’s a homocidal nutjob. Fortunately, he’s a homocidal nutjob who found God—after returning to Korea, he met an American pastor in Uijeongbu to whom he confessed his crime. He also met the girl’s mother and confessed. Which I’m sure went well.

to all single men out there:
if you ever propose to someone and she rejects you, consider it a blessing in disguise and hit the clubs!

And if he was drunk at the time that should get him about three years.
