I take it Southwest Airlines has different standards than Korean Air

by Robert Koehler on June 24, 2011

in Americans are Strange, Completely Random Crap

I guess this is a difference between Korean and American air travel:

A Southwest Airlines pilot has been suspended after accidentally broadcasting an angry, expletive-laden rant against the looks and sexualities of his airline’s flight attendants.
[...]
“It was just a continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandes,” he says. “I don’t give a f—, I hate 100 per cent of their asses.”

He complains about visiting a bar with other staff only three times in six months.

“With two girls, one of them that was probably do-able, but … all these two women wanted to do was, one wanted to berate her sister and the other one wanted to bitch about her husband, literally for three hours.”

“When that was done, 2.30 I got back to room and thought, ‘Why the f— did I stay up?”‘

In fairness to Southwest, their stewardesses might not be “do-able,” but their flights probably take much less ground fire from their own Marine Corps.

Anyway, for the benefit of other pilots who are suffering from the same difficulties, I link to this recent list of the hottest stewardess airlines. Oddly, neither Korean Air or Asiana were on there. A crime, if you ask me.

Yeah that was a very British-centric list, i.e., companies that service the British Isles and/or connect them with former territories, but aren’t BA. (But then I guess the survey participants were all British).

I’d have to say that people getting bent out off shape because of the survey are pretty idiotic. Service, edible food, not being stingy on the booze and good service are more important, but it’s nice to have attractive smiling women attending to you on your flight. Much better to have a cute one than an ugly old trout!

I’d have to say that suprisingly (because there are lots of nice Dutch ladies) the most ugly attendants I’ve seen were KLM, they have some right shockers! Thai Air, Vietnam Air, Singapore are great, Korean Air and Asiana have potential, but their uniform doesn’t bring out the best in them.

I’ve not flown BA for a very long time indeed (about 15 years ago) , but they were very nice last time.

Keith,

I’m okay with all shapes, sizes, ages, looks and orientations but it’s the attitudes that are really important to me.

Some of the best flight attendants I have had were in their late 40s or 50s, but the absolute worst ones were also. I had a couple of United Airlines flights where these ladies were rude and snapped at everyone. I’m not sure what they thought their job description was but service was not involved.

^ I agree 100% KLM service is often in the same league ropey as the attendants! Some of them are OK, but a lot of them are rude and ugly. Even a plain looking person can be quite attractive-pleasant if they have a warm, genuine smile and a good attitude!

I used to fly quite a lot on Delta’s Skyteam carriers, always preferring Korean Air over Delta service-wise. I remember one trip right after the merger with Northwest Airlines, on what was a former NWA route from Seoul back to the USA via Tokyo. While the flight attendants were comparable to Deltas’ in terms of age, size and appearance (or lack thereof), their service was so outstanding I wrote letter to the airline.

I agree 100%, a smile and good attitude goes a long way.

Hey 조엘, I take it you’re a big airline guy? Are you more into the business side of things or the general excitment of flying and travel?

Don’t get me started on Delta. Skymiles inflation is killing me.

Service-wise…I’d probably kill a man for a few hours in one of Singapore’s premium cabins.

Is it only me in the world who prefers his flight attendants to be older people? I always feel bad asking young women (at this point younger than me) to fetch stuff for me. My KAL and Asiana flights are always uncomfortable. I would rather get those things myself, or get things for them.

TheKorean and I are very different. I have no problems telling young women what to do.

And therefore, we arrive at very different results with women. Hey-oh!

Not all Korean Air and Asiana stewardesses are hot. I noticed a HUGE drop off between international flight stewardesses and domestic flight stewardesses. The ones on Korea Air going from Kimpo to Jeju were as plain Jane as they got.

That is such anti-ajushi behavior. Such girls are use to ajushis motioning to them and growling out “Ya! Whiskey joh!”

I flew Air Koryo from Beijing to Pyongyang return (in 2001) and recall that the (all young female) flight attendants were sort of KAL domestic class in looks. Pleasant but unremarkable. They did not, as I recall reading in the 1990s, recite lines from Kim Il-sung during the flight.

Your problem is they don’t listen.

True. But even the not hot flight attendants are miles better than any US ones. Even in the customer service category.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I used to teach Asiana flight attendants at their Training Center, and I remember all of them looking “hot,” though they all looked pretty much the same when wearing the same uniforms and makeup, having the same hairdos, and displaying the same mannerisms.

They used to walk down the halls in groups of twos and threes, doing a deep, straight-legged bows to everyone they met. They were like sexy robots, and if you just happened to be walking behind them, you could not help but notice their legs, especially during one of their synchronized bowing routines. They even stopped to do their bows on the stairs until I mentioned to the training staff that that was not only dangerous, but also very revealing. The only difference among the ladies was the color of their underwear.

The short skirts they wore during training were very distracting, though I tried hard not to show how distracting.

Too true.

My brother’s a Southwest pilot, and I had to click on the link to make sure it wasn’t him as he would say the sort of things that got his colleague into trouble.

Is it only me in the world who prefers his flight attendants to be older people?

Well, I’d prefer more male flight attendants. Am flexible on age as long as they’re reasonably fit and trim. MAS has the hottest male flight attendants. The few young men who work on KAL international flights are easy on the eyes and friendly, too.

I personally couldn’t care less about the sexual preferences and pc’ness of our nation’s airline pilots. All I expect of them is to get me from point A to point B without getting in a jam or getting all of us killed. As long as they can do that 100% of the time while I’m flying, more power to ya’ boys! (Raunchy talk is par for the course among military vets, which is where most civilian airline pilots started out. Everyone needs to get over the fact that flyboys will be flyboys, regardless of what the public expects.)
