Nice Korean ad copy, though…

It’s probably not good when Korea makes Perez Hilton

“If my son becomes gay and dies from AIDs after watching ‘Life Is Beautiful’, SBS must take responsibility!”

Watch Life is Beautiful >>> turn gay >>> get AIDS >>> die

Eat American beef >>> get BSE >>> turn crazy >>> die

Gotta admire the consistency.

exactly what do they have the “highest IQ” in? How to talk BS?

Won’t dressing their kids in pink t-shirts, encouraging them to have long fingernails and allowing their young men to carry “man-purses” make them more gay than watching a soapie?

3 Craash October 4, 2010 at 5:51 pm

btw, its actually illegal under the “Korean Youth protection act” to even mention “gay” or educate koreans under the age of 19 in anything about homosexuality.

I’ve always thought that the fear of someone being lured into the homosexual lifestyle is one of the most absurd things ever conceived of. The idea that some kid would see gay goings-on and say “hey I would have liked women, but this looks even cooler! I’m gonna go bang guys!” is the most patently stupid thought a human can have. If you are not gay you are REPULSED by the thought of you having gay sex.

I have gay friends, and am all for people living as who they were born to be, but the thought of me sucking a dick or getting banged in my ass by a guy is absolutely repulsive to me. It’s up there with drinking a gallon of urine or having sex with a cat on my list of things to do. If you think that people can be turned gay by watching a gay couple on tv, you are either the stupidest human on earth, or much much much much more likely a closeted homosexual yourself.

Rant over.

I’m calling for a ban on Superman as well. Kids watch that stuff, sling a towel over their shoulders and go jumping out windows — dead. Plus the guy is obviously a yankee imperialist and those tights are pretty gay.

If straight people can become gay by watching TV shows “glorifying” the gay lifestyle, why don’t gay people become straight by watching TV shows that “glorify” straight lifestyles?

Why, with society “awash” in straight media, you’d think there wouldn’t be any gay people at all.

What all of those said, but special appreciation goes to what Craash said and Sulper man.

And yet, despite the ignorance of older folks . . .

At my high school in Korea there were a number of students who were obviously gay or lesbian (hel-LO!). Everyone knew it. Here’s what’s weird: the other kids were OK with it. The teachers seemed OK with it. Fat kids, dumb kids, ugly kids, feminine boys and masculine girls were all still Koreans and still members of the tribe. They weren’t ostracized, at least not to the degree they would have been in the U.S. That’s the upside, I guess, of Korea’s group mentality.

My favourite mothers are Mothers Against Illegal Aliens followed very closely by Mothers Against Canada. It’s funny to see the mothers against illegal aliens also cover in their topic “gay marriage” with that Shortland Street clip. I guess if you are a mother against anything, it’s easy to be against many things.

10 αβγδε October 4, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Sure this group of mothers or whoever they be are wrong. No question. But this news article does not provide the opportunity to talk about “Koreans” as if they were a solid unity. Keep that in mind. It’ll be difficult for some of you, I know. Lazy thinking courses in your veins like urinal waste, and, apparently, some of you are in need of discharge. It’s the natural cycle of stupid. But let’s not be stupid.

@9,

They are also known as Eomma Goom by Sarah Palin. First America, now Korea. Eomma Goom gonna’ fix everything.

The drama itself is wonderful. It portrays two sets of family reaction. The main character has a wonderful family well, his immediate parents who despite being of a simpler background, are movingly supportive struggling hard to brush their own prejudice aside. The other one, who’s been married with a kid before (here is their argument of it being “a choice”) has a nightmare time with his fancier parents (and siblings) total rejection. This is why the writer Kim Suhyun is a real genius. The intricate character portrayal doesn’t set the drama up just to be another “gay vs society” in black and white. I haven’t really been following it since my last post on it, though.

First they came for “Life is Beautiful.” Then they came for “Torchwood”…

14 sulperman October 4, 2010 at 8:16 pm

I’ve got some students who are into Torchwood. The little bastards like Dr. Who better. Fools.

15 yuna October 4, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I saw 0.2 of a Torchwood episode once. It’s the one where an American accent sounds heroic against the general naffness of a BBC set (and extras) right? I am also flabbergasted to discover that the token Oriental chick (or Asian or whatever, so shoot me) in it is actually one of a Japanese descent AND that she was Saffy(Saffron)’s nerdy friend in Ab Fab.

16 seouldout October 4, 2010 at 8:50 pm

So, when might I expect the Korean version of The L Word?

Ab Fab, now that was a great show! I love TV’s token Oriental chicks. They’re always the tastiest.

17 sulperman October 4, 2010 at 8:58 pm

Yeah, but that heroic American is also constantly making out with British men, so his over-Americanness is offset by that, right? Watch it a bit more, you might get over that initial bad impression. Plus, like every good show, you should really watch it from the beginning, not some random episode on BBC world.

Also, Absolutely Fabulous sucks.

18 seouldout October 4, 2010 at 9:08 pm

BTW, do these mommas state how SBS ought to take responsibility?

I see at least 3 potential spin offs from this show. The Turn Gay and Get AIDs comedy hour. The No, it’s not Kaposi’s Sarcoma. That’s the Mongolian spot on my face melodramatic series. And wrap it up with a Deal or No Deal game show rip off where the howling mommas of the deceased choose a coffin full of money.

19 seouldout October 4, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Absolutely Fabulous sucks.

Infidel! Burn him!

20 Granfalloon October 4, 2010 at 9:13 pm

I see this as progress. These mothers are openly admitting that there is the possibility of their sons being gay. That’s a breakthrough, no?

21 george m October 4, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Craash, you mean the young Korean man in the pink t-shirt, with the long fingernails and carrying the man-purse who tried to shove the dildo up my butt was a homosexual?

Sorry for the Borat rip-off.

22 WangKon936 October 5, 2010 at 12:47 am

I agree with # 10.

23 setnaffa October 5, 2010 at 1:38 am

Torchwood sucks worse than Glee and House combined. It’s like SGU except no Stargates…

24 setnaffa October 5, 2010 at 1:40 am

BTW, gay hanguk sarams means more freedom for young, straight weiguk sarams… No wonder you scurrilous ESL types applaud this!

25 Benicio74 October 5, 2010 at 11:33 am

I know not all Koreans are anti-gay bigotted, but just like my home country, too many are.
Kguys can carry man purses and dress as gay as they want, but they are not allowed to actually come out of the closet- according to the ”rules”.
When I first got here, many of the old guard proudly proclaimed that there are “no gays in Korea”. We knew it was ludicrous!
When Hong Seok Cheon came out, they vilified him because they couldn’t say that anymore. They hated/hate him for that.
Again, with this new drama, they are afraid that the closeted gays will be empowered to come out and they just can’t tolerate that.
Now they have to admit that there are gays in Korea. However, according to the “rules”, the gays must remain closeted and have straight marriages with kids.
These people are acting dumb, but not as dumb as to believe that watching a TV show or observing gays will make them gay. They just want to stop anything that would empower a gay person to come out of the closet.
Just like back in the US with that idiot anti-gay minister, Ted Haggerty, who got busted screwing guys. They know gay people are born that way, but they believe that gays should deny there true nature and make every attempt to live a lie as straights.
Now that is idiotic!

Shower the mothers in santorum and be done with it.
