The USS George Washington and the ROKS Dokdo in Busan. Both vessels are participating in joint naval drills in the East Sea. Photo ripped off from here.
Can’t help but look at one of those marvelous vessels and think to myself, to borrow the line from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, “What an industrious empire!”
Oh, and interesting photo contrast in the Daily Mail. Not sure if that was intentional.

Either that or what an overwrought Military Industrial Complex we have! That said, anyone see the PBS documentary, “Carrier”? One of the best lines was from a bedraggled-looking, sleep-deprived black petty officer on board, who described his working environment as such: “An aircraft carrier is basically a big ass floating high school.”
Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, “What an industrious empire!”
That was my favorite line in the movie too.
The Dong-a Ilbo, citing “high-ranking US officials” says the official Obama policy line in regards to North Korea is “regime change.”

The latest round of sanctions—which appear to some of the best anti-NK sanctions in a long while—is part of the effort to choke-hold top KJI regime players into submission. The article claims President Lee’s government is still undecided about the best course of action, worried about potential disorder.
If true, this is momentous. First, it looks like President Obama is finally getting his NK policy in order and undercutting the spineless peace-n-love namby-pambies in the Korea policy set. “Top US officials” have finally learned their lesson about North Korean prevarications and will not be lassoed into another round of the Six Party Circus, sometimes refered to as the “Sally Struthers Save-the-Kims Telethon.”
Second, no sitting American president has ever actively worked to bring about North Korean regime change. Since the USSR fell, North Korea has been peripheral to US policy interests; an annoyance to be mollified, but not a chronic disease be eradicated. By actively machinating to crush the noxious Chinese puppet like the mosquito that it is, the US will be well-positioned to change the balance of power in Northeast Asia in its favor.
Given recent events, American intelligence operatives may see a potential opening as to effectuate the end of the Northern Nightmare.
I applauded these efforts with a full-on standing ovation.
[nitpick] Those are ships. [/nitpick]
I heartily endorse going from 0 to 160 mph in several seconds via a catapult shot.
The second article states “Though the impoverished North has a large conventional military and the capability to build nuclear weapons, it is not believed to have the technology needed to use nuclear devices as warheads”.
I thought they could make nuclear warheads?
Didn’t they test one in 2006?
Also, the photo in the second link of the NK solider glaring at Hilary through the window is an amazing photo. I wonder how she felt. That SK soldier behind her also looks mean staring back through the window at the NK soldier.
I wonder if the “precision strike” against elite NoKo’s offshore accounts will do much damage at all. Most of these shell companies fronting for NoKo’s illegal activities including the more urgent nuclear technology sales operate outside of US Jurisdiction and operate in China and other NoKo friendly countries. However, I applaud the new sanctions because it shows that US patience with NoKo is running out. It should be noted NoKo is the most dangerous terrorist threat to the rest of the Allied Nations and it’s understandable why US would be taking such cautious offensive position. When you are dealing with something as unpredictable as NoKo, something like a dog with rabies, it’s no wonder even China tiptoes around digging to deep with NoKos.
I think going after overseas accounts is the way to go actually. To get what Kim Jong Il wants he needs dollars or yen or euros. North Korean currency is worthless everywhere in the world so to get his cognac and other luxury items to keep himself and his minions happy he needs to pay for them with anything but North Korean won. You take away his ability to fill his stomach with anything but the bark and tree leaves the rest of his population is getting by, then you literally “hit him” in the stomach. Take away his foreign currency and it will affect him.
The carrier will be rendered obsolete by a new, asymmetrical weapons system much like the big gun battleship was rendered obsolete by aircraft during WW2.
People have been saying that for many years… And yet, there is no better tool on the horizon…
Pukhan PT boats on your mind?
Time to come out of the 1950s in your thinking (and understanding of what carriers do)…
Some folks think PBS told us everything about US aircraft carriers… in an unbiased way… With Bush in the White House…
These people are either naive or dishonest.
Craash, I heard the smallest Nork Nuke was roughly the size of a small house… not missile ready unless they stole additional technology they cannot afford to create…
