Bieber, North Korea and the Reason Online Polls Suck

by R. Elgin on July 6, 2010

A guy who is sixteen, sings and has his own rock band and has fame has it made, right?

Not by a long shot, especially in the age of internet gossip and pranksters.  Justin Bieber, a Canadian musician, became famous, only to fend off rumours of him having syphilis, dying, and his mom being a big-time freak.
Well, internet pranksters have stacked a poll, on his site, that asked where should he play next.  You guessed the outcome already, probably.  Bieber is supposed to go to North Korea.

I lost sympathy for the little pop-tart when he failed to understand what “German” is.

If the price these vapid teen-idles pay for their fame and fortune is a little internet mockery, I’m okay with that.

@eatyourkimchi
What ever happened to the video about “voting day in Korea”? Did you have to take it down due to the negative press?

@ #6/eatyourkimchi

Vote here. Hurry, there’s only a couple of hours left to vote!

Maybe you could read my post on the subject. The BBC got a quote from the North Korean embassy!

By the way, I like your blog/YouTube videos.

If the price these vapid teen-idles pay for their fame and fortune is a little internet mockery, I’m okay with that.

But some of what the trolls did was over the line. For example …

* Spreading rumours that his mom was posing for Playboy. Leave the guy’s family out of it.

* Redirecting his YouTube videos to hardcore porn. Some of his fans are underage. They might be immature, but that’s not an appropriate way to tease them.

We took it down because of crazy people calling our schools and shouting at the secretaries. They’d yell, and would refuse to leave a name and contact number as well. We didn’t want to put our schools through any more of that, so we took it off YouTube.

Wow… That’s crazy.
Keep up the good work… Liked your latest Convenience store patio bit.
Don’t forget to vote to send Bieber to N.Korea. :D

Who is Justin Bieber, and why do people hate him so?

Who is Justin Bieber, and why do people hate him so?

He is the world’s biggest pop star, you incorrigible fuddy duddy!! (That cover pic should also answer your second question.)

Androgynous tween shame of Canada longing to be the shame of America with a haircut so ridiculous, even teddy-bear hugging, fluffy mitten-wearing, eyeliner-sporting Korean pop closet-cases think it’s gay.

I hadn’t heard of this fellow until today, but from what I’ve read, this seems to be a perfect case of why online polls are pretty damn awesome.

22 cmm July 7, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I was so happy to find out that he was from Canada.

23 Granfalloon July 7, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Extra Korea,
There’s no way I can defend the behavior of internet trolls, or even claim that Bieber deserves the mockery. But I’ve seen far more extreme internet harassment leveled at people who aren’t rich, famous, or have agencies and law firms representing them. Like I said, I have no sympathy for Bieber, or the airheaded glitterati he represents.

24 Iceberg July 7, 2010 at 4:57 pm

My Korean colleague wants to know why anyone would want just in beaver.

(Okay, I made that up. Couldn’t resist.)

25 CactusMcHarris July 8, 2010 at 1:55 am

Folks,

If you haven’t heard of Justin Bieber, consider yourself blessed. If you have and are sentient, I think you’d agree he’s another vapid pop star, but since he’s Canadian he gets a lot of press on CBC and the like.

#24,

I like the cut of your jib, sir. The cartoon of the lady shaving a beaver in the sink, wondering why her husband wants her beaver shaved is applicable – plus the whole Canadian beaver connection.

#12,

I would’ve thought people would be on YOUR side. That video was hilarious. What the hell. Korean “netizens” = tiresome nationalism + too much free time.
