USA Wins! USA Wins!

by Robert Koehler on June 24, 2010

in Korean Sports

I couldn’t see the match, as KBS was showing Slovakia Slovenia and some really boring team wearing red, but the US — after some very bad finishing and getting sodomized by a ref once again — scored a minute into injury time to beat Algeria.

USA! USA!

The USA finishes atop Group C. The team that beat Slovakia Slovenia also advances.

I always knew the US was one click better than Algeria, but now the whole world — even the Hankyoreh Shinmun — has to acknowledge that!

I was about to cry like a little girl. Just unbelievable. Unbelievable.

Shouting Slovakia! Cadere Italia.

6 iheartblueballs June 24, 2010 at 1:22 am

Both the Slovaks and Slovenians are outraged by your confusion.

Great win for the USA after getting another Donaghy shaft on that early disallowed goal. Had to admit I had given up and was getting ready to find some neighborhood cats to punt, but Donovan was in the right spot and made up for Dempsey and Altidore blowing several good opportunities.

Just hope we can avoid Germany in the next round…the 2002 handball pain is still fresh and they always find a way to methodically dismantle us.

7 Iceberg June 24, 2010 at 1:26 am

Cherundolo was the Man of the Match in my opinion. Great pace and pressure upfield. Nice twist.

8 Anonymous Commenter June 24, 2010 at 1:36 am

Algeria got away with a red card. Clint Dempsey was punched in the face.

9 dokdoforever June 24, 2010 at 1:40 am

Yeah, got to keep your Slavs straight. SBS is now showing US Algeria for those who wish to relive the glory of seeing Dempsey fire shots wildly in random directions.

Too bad nobody in my office gives a crap about a miracle victory for the USA in the grandest stage in sports. Sucks major cojones if you ask me.

12 JW June 24, 2010 at 2:09 am

You know, I’m really against that pile-on celebration. It’s an awesome victory and all, but do you really have to risk injuring your best player while trying to congratulate the guy? Recently a MLB player was injured during a celebration after he hit a walkoff homer and finished rounding the bases. What are they thinking?

13 WangKon936 June 24, 2010 at 2:10 am

U-S-A! U-S-A!

To celebrate… I thought I’d link to a little World Cup themed outsourced Chinese body paint. Might be NSFW…

14 JW June 24, 2010 at 2:11 am

True, I guess Donovan kind of asked for it by intentionally sliding on the ground like that. But still, he shouldn’t be allowed to do that, in my opinion.

15 non korean June 24, 2010 at 2:24 am

Another legit goal disallowed but America has come out smelling like roses.

The ref from the Slovenia match was suspended or whatever you call it for the rest of the world cup-YES.

Germany is in a position where they need to win because my money is on Serbia beating the Australians. Most likely America will play Serbia or Ghana in the next round. Not bad.

16 baduk June 24, 2010 at 2:34 am

A miraculous goal with less than five minutes left!!! USA! USA!
Donovan was cool as usual.

USA! USA!

17 Anathema June 24, 2010 at 2:55 am

Excellent news. I predicted the US would come out on top, and yeah, essentially they beat England. Take that, arrogant no-goodnik Poms!

18 gangpehmoderniste June 24, 2010 at 3:37 am

Had to admit I had given up and was getting ready to find some neighborhood cats to punt

In that case you would have just had to wait 24 hours, you know i will not chicken out of the abuse i will deservingly get tomorrow right ? :)

Anyway sorry the ajossi thing wasn’t even supposed to be snarky i should have added a smiley and anyway congrats your team did great no question about it

19 JiMong June 24, 2010 at 5:14 am

Congrats to team USA! They would face Ghana, way better option than other side, even if Australia wins over Serbia coz of goal differences. And will have your favorite partner team Korea in Quarter-finals for sure.
But if Australia draws with Serbia…hmm….are they still having a match against Ghana or Serbia?

20 PineForest June 24, 2010 at 6:02 am

Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee——–GUK. Great goal, storybook ending to the group stage. I have to hand it to the Algerian keeper, he held up until the last moment. Can’t wait for the start of the next stage.

Not even necessary. I like to mix things up and have at go at people as you’ve well seen, so I fully expect to take it in return. Doesn’t really bother me, as I wouldn’t be participating here if it were all flowers and candies.

Truth be told, Italy’s national side only get so much shit because they’re good. If they were just pretty-boys with a penchant for theatrics and regularly went out in group stage…no one would even notice or care (see Spain for evidence). It’s only because they’ve been so successful historically that they get heaped on.

So this morning, I woke up and immediately realized I overslept and was missing the U.S. v. Algeria game. I rushed to the TV and turned to ESPN… and just in time to catch the awesomatastic Howard-Donovan-Altidore-Donovan counterattack.

Am I a lucky bastard? I like to think so.

23 Granfalloon June 24, 2010 at 7:35 am

Ghana advances as well. My condolences to the Aussies, but it’s nice to see an African team in the next round, even if I do hope they lose their next match.

24 Wedge June 24, 2010 at 9:24 am

Glad to see we pulled it. I wonder if FIFA will impose another one-goal handicap on us for the Ghana game.

Also, does anyone else NOT have SBS Sports in their cable package? Hayzeus Christo, I gotta watch some boring Poms take on a Crispin Glover-lookalike instead?

25 Sparkles June 24, 2010 at 11:16 am

KBS was showing the England match? Serious grounds for a lawsuit.

Christ, soccer su … ddenly seems interesting.

I’m actually looking forward to Brazil-Portugal and Spain-Chile, Friday.

Here goes, for perhaps the one and only time in my life:

Well done to the US, but more importantly England won! All the naysayers and bad sports can now kindly kiss my hairy arse!

Next job is to defeat the krauts.

dont get full of yourself bro. i didnt know jack about soccer before this world cup but after following it a little bit i’ve learned that england is a ridiculously overrated overhyped whiny bunch of schoolgirls. completely mediocre bro.

Next job is to defeat the krauts.

good luck. youre gonna need it bro. big time. i hope they whip your candy asses.

Nice win by the US team. Wow, what a nail-bitter. Landon Donovan’s injury time goal was one for the ages. Overall, the US looks solid. They put together some great plays, and had some great chances, but they need to work on their follow through.

Now, here comes the tough part. If the US beats Ghana, and South Korea gets their act together and beats Uruguay, then the US and South Korea will face off in the quarterfinals. I wouldn’t know who I would root for…

31 gangpehmoderniste June 24, 2010 at 4:45 pm

IHBB et al:

Personally i think Germany would have been a better pick for Team America for a series of reasons:

1) Ghana is a good team, fast, athletically impressive and with decent skills, kinda like the US, it is always particularly dangerous to square off against a team with similar carachteristics

2) In this case probably the US is the favourite team to advance, again never an easy position to hold

3) Germany ain’t that good this year and American boys would thrive on being the underdog taking on the giants of soccer. I think that soon or later, and sooner rather than later, the US will win the World Cup, probably this is not their year yet but a victory against Germany would be monumental for Yankee ambitions: you want to be major league you gotta play with the big boys, sooner or later make no difference really

4) Kicking Germany in the ass would be a giant marketing bonanza for American soccer, i don’t think soccer will ever be really major in America but it could build imho a fanbase similar to ice hockey in the South

32 beatnix June 24, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Last minute goal… Can’t get anymore exiting than that.

33 hoju_saram June 24, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Australia 2 Serbia 1. We won the battle, lost the war. The US should beat Ghana – we almost beat them with 10 men for 80 minutes. Good to see the yanks go through, now if NZ advances, Italy is knocked out and a train runs over De Rossi I’ll be a happy man.

Trust me, you’re better off playing Ghana.

I woke up this morning and found out I have a new Prime Minster. Lucky? Jury’s out on that one…

36 inkevitch June 24, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Gangpeh, agree about that north korean Jong guy. Completely disagree about Ghana. Ghana only got through because of two penalties and two red cards. They were poor against 10 serbs, poor against 10 aussies. US tore Asutralia to shreds in acfriendly. Ghana were easily the worst team in a mediocre group that were significantly helped by referees. Germany probably would have beaten Serbia if they didn’t get the early red card. Kudos to the socceroos for showing some spirit and winning, but a little part of me hoped that serbia won so Ghana didn’t get through. Only because they were that awful. african teams have team awful in general, only 1 out of 6 getting to the round of 16 (and with a heap of help for that) Where as Asia has 1/4, possibly 2/4 if japan get a draw or better and australia missed out by 3GD (if only we hadn’t conceded to the serbs and the germans did their part by winning 3-0)

Italy and NZ to get through? I feel that maybe the lucky bullshit dust has been sprinkled on the sheep buggerers.

37 inkevitch June 24, 2010 at 6:59 pm

HojuSaram,

Last time we had a red head prime minister the great depression started a week later. Baduk, WangKon, any thoughts on this?

38 hoju_saram June 24, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Don’t ask Baduk, he’ll tell us we’re doomed.
