A day of celebration today for Korea (well on the South side anyway) and probably tomorrow and the next day, and the next week.
I have wondered whether Jongil is going to be angry after the Norths devastating loss and after they see SK progress to the second round, that they might do something silly, to punish SK out of spite.
The ball watching by both team’s defense in this game lead to goals for each sides. Defender Kim Nam-Il who was brought in to guard the lead floated around, mugged a Nigerian drawing a penalty leading to the tying goal – another bad defending from South Korea. Then there was the empty netter by the Nigerian forward, all he had to do was to tap in the ball, but he tapped it wide. That must be the worst miss of opportunity in this tournament. Nigerians numerously broke through Korea’s defense but couldn’t score the final blow. Korea had a lot of luck on their side today, to pull that one out of the fire, and tie Nigeria. It really wasn’t an ideal way to get into the next round. Poor defending is their problem in which Uruguay will look forward to exploiting.
cm,
Actually those two misses were so blatantly bad that I suspect something sinister. The Portuguese refree was showering SK with free kicks, two of them resulted in goals.
Hey, it is all part of the game.
I hope we can pull the same thing on Uruguay. Pilsung Korea!
Park JuYoung’s kick was a beauty. And, Lee JungSoo’s goal was perfect; he missed the header but kicked it in. It was like a grabbing his own rebound and making/scoring the shot. Very sweet.
The French team? What French team? You mean a bunch of mercenaries France bought?
This old White guy was telling the whole bunch of Black soldiers how to fight and one of them said I ain’t going to listen a has-been.
Excellently argued, Jean-Marie Le Baduk. Except for the small matter of the multi-ethnic, whitey-coached 1998 World Cup winning team (and Euro 2000 champions). You pillock.
cm,
Don’t be too sure. One game can go either way between these excellent teams, especially when it was decided by tie-breaking penalty kicks after overtime.
Brazil or Germany or even Italians can beat Argentina by sitting on Messi.
Not only does Argentina have a deranged coach, their defence is not nearly as strong as their admittedly fearsome attack. Keep in mind, cm, that this team, Messi and all, came closer to elimination in the qualifiers than any Argentina side had in eons. Brazil and Spain could certainly take them, as, on their day, could Germany or even The Netherlands.
No Argentina play like a one man team, but they have a heap of options and unlike Higuain that needs twenty chances to get a hatrick, milito needs one chance to score the one goal needed.
But last world cup Argentina were also on fire then came a cropper in the knock out rounds. Case of peaking too early.
As much as I despise Italian teams (and referees) not peaking too early is one of there specialities.
Speaking of the the Italians, Gangpeh I will be in Korea in a month. If the Italians beat the kiwis I will buy you a beer, if the kiwis beat the Italians will you buy me a bottle of Italian wine?
And while Inter have done well the last two seasons under Mourhino, they are going down now as Benitez is the next best thing to useless. Expect to see Inter filled with underperforming over priced injury prone spanish players. And expect the three best things about inter (after mourhino) sneider, milito and maicon leave.
Only positive about benitez coming is that after one season of poor performances the notoriously trigger happy italians will be calling for his departure.
Maybe I got on the wrong subject by classifying French team by the color of their skin. Soccer, after all, is a game and the best players should represent their country.
I should be more sensitive about this subject in the future.
Despite their disappointment so far, I will be rooting for the English over Slovenia tomorrow. That and a victory over Algeria (fingers-crossed) means the U.S. will most likely win the group and avoid Argentina altogether unless they somehow miraculously advance to the Semi-finals. This also means that there is a very small possibility of a U.S.-Korea match in the Quarters, but I don’t think Korea will beat Uruguay especially after today’s defensive performance. Uruguay has been good.
Argentina does play like a team. Messi has zero goals yet Argentina has the most goals and the biggest goal differential with exception to Portugal’s goalgasm against North Korea. Germany and Italy both have shown some shakiness in their groups. The Dutch have won both games, but not convincingly. I think they’re just starting out slowly. They’ll be better in the knockout. Brazil is Brazil, therefore, Brazil is 최고.
Maradona must have shared his cocaine with his team. The Argentinians are running circles around their opponents.
I wish Guus would make another assessment, as Coach 허 is in need of advice. The Warriors showed flourishes of skill on the attack this morning, but essentially the entire last fifteen minutes of the match should be frightening for any Korean fan.
The ease they showed with the ball against Greece was gone for Argentina and certainly missing when they needed it to maintain possession late in the match today. This is most bizarre when you take into account the fact that the coach knew Argentina had a lead and Greece was not threatening. Why was Nigeria even getting touches?
In a sense, Korea has worsened with each match, and the Uruguayans are licking their chops.
The Korea-Uruguay friendly in Seoul in ’07 was a dissection via counterattack. They ran half as much and won by multiple goals. This will happen again.
Also, why do so many people here rip on Diego? The teams in their group were lame at best, but they conceded only one goal, which was promptly blamed on the vuvuzelas. So… which other offensive powerhouse in the tournament is going to expose them? Oh, right… there isn’t one, at least not outside of South America.
I know nothing about football or his strategy, but I imagine Maradona’s schmoozing with Hugo Chavez and the tattoos of Che/Castro rub a lot of people the wrong way. Relevant or not, many people aren’t able to separate sport and politics.
uh annom the us wont draw argentina in round 2 the argentines drew mexico runners up in group a, the us (provided they get through) get a group d team, they could get korea in a quarterfinal (if they win their group) or argentina (if they finish 2nd) their path to the semis would be much easier if the win their group (runner up group d followed by winner of urg-kor).
Speaking of the the Italians, Gangpeh I will be in Korea in a month. If the Italians beat the kiwis I will buy you a beer, if the kiwis beat the Italians will you buy me a bottle of Italian wine
i should be there end of July too, deal…even if i suspect both we will have to buy a bottle of soju to some Paraguay and Slovakian expats
And while Inter have done well the last two seasons under Mourhino, they are going down now as Benitez is the next best thing to useless. Expect to see Inter filled with underperforming over priced injury prone spanish players. And expect the three best things about inter (after mourhino) sneider, milito and maicon leave.
Only positive about benitez coming is that after one season of poor performances the notoriously trigger happy italians will be calling for his departure.
as much as i hate admitting it you may have a fucking point unfortunately the team is owned by a dumbfuck with lotsa dough
so after looking at Goatse you had a hankering for red meat, prepared rare, washed down with red wine?
That’s not even lame; just evidence that either you can’t read or you’re so witless you keep returning to push your snout in the same garbage dump? I said your vulgarities don’t put me off stride; you’re not even a bantam weight.
“a coin flip? God bless baseball” What do you expect? It is a short tournament, with no time to play tie breaking game. What else are they going to do?
I had similar thoughts about Kim Nam-Il, the first substitution. The guy comes in, immediately makes a poor decision and shoots the ball from practically mid field way over the goal. Then he kicks the Nigerian in the back of the leg for that penalty kick. Please keep that guy away from the field.
Korea dominated from the middle of the first half to middle of the second half and then ran out of steam. Maybe it was the substitutions. Maybe they were tired. But, clearly they can’t afford to do that again.
The Korean team succeeds through quickness and by wearing down their opponent, as they did with Greece -rather than say, through skillful ball control or great passing. That, I think, was part of Hiddinks’ successful strategy. Basically the better conditioned Koreans outhustle the other side. Hopefull they show that aggressiveness again on Saturday.
Sorry if I gave the impression I was a Kiwi. I guess if this bet was based on nationality I would already oh you a drink as Australia was beaten by a sin gle Italian on the weekend
Coach Huh Jung Moo is good at killing Korean aggressiveness. He thinks his team is a first rate defensive team. When Korea starts playing “defensively”, that’s when they get into trouble. Part of being a good coach is to know what your weaknesses are and where your strengths lie. Korea’s weakness is defense, but they have a very strong midfield. Korea should be playing to their strength, yet the coach insists on trying to playing to their weakness instead. I just can’t stand this guy.
2) this team is much more experienced, as many players have played in Europe.
3) but unfortunately, this team does not even come close when it comes to physical fitness and most of all, heart. Look at the first goal yesterday. The Nigerian player outfought the Korean defender for the ball, and centered the ball which lead to a goal. Cha Duri lost his marked man in the penalty box and is rightfully criticized. But I think the worse culprit was defender Kim Jung Woo who let the Nigerian beat him off the ball and allowing the cross. In 2002, you never saw Koreans getting beaten off the ball and opponents blowing past them, as much we have seen in this tournament. This tells me this year’s South Korean team’s physically fitness is poor, and they are physically weaker than they were in 2002.
Man you know what i’m starting to hope for really ? Watching all of ‘em: England, Spain, France (Anelka thank you for living), Germany and ITALY (i can’t stand ‘em either) getting thrown out in the first phase, these overpaid buffoons all deserve some quality time in the Dear Leader coal mines
Coach Huh Jung Moo is good at killing Korean aggressiveness. He thinks his team is a first rate defensive team. When Korea starts playing “defensively”, that’s when they get into trouble. Part of being a good coach is to know what your weaknesses are and where your strengths lie. Korea’s weakness is defense, but they have a very strong midfield
Agreed, partially: even if you have a very strong midfield, positioning your team excessively high on the pitch, hoping to crack your opponent out of sheer skill and pressure is a tactic not even Brazil can afford to use anymore. They played a bit like that against Argentina in the second half which resulted in a rapid meltdown.
You’re right though about the coach using an excessively tight leash on the team, personally i believe among all the opponents a Euro/South American hybrid like Uruguay is probably the most dangerous team Korea could end up with
I feel I should defend coach Huh Jung-moo against cm. He isn’t as successful as Hiddink yet, but Hiddink had a number of advantages that Huh doesn’t have. Firstly, Hiddink was playing at home. His record away from Korea wasn’t nearly as good as Huh’s is. They even managed to lose to Canada in 2002 which takes some doing. Huh doesn’t have the luxury of playing every game in front of 60,000 partisan fans. Secondly, Korea played exclusively European teams at the World Cup in 2002 (and uh, European “cast-offs”) who really struggled with the climate and humidity. The conditions in South Africa are much more equal and it shows. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly Hiddink had the team together for six months prior to the World Cup to prepare them and their physical fitness. Precisely because many of the current squad are playing in Europe Huh has had to make do with less preparation matches and oftentimes without the European based players such as in the tours to South Africa/Malaga and the EAFF. That people like Ki Sung-yong are sitting on their fannies at Celtic isn’t exactly his fault.
Considering where the team was when he took over from that clueless assistant of Hiddink’s (and whatever has become of Verbeek since?) I think coach Huh has done a commendable job. Hiddink had much better resources to work with with Russia in 2010 and where did that get him? Only a Chinese nutizen would argue that Korea aren’t currently the best team in Asia and while the same was probably true in 2002 that’s still no mean feat. He should’ve included Cho Won-hee and Lee Keun-ho in the squad and if he’s not going to use him left Ahn Jung-hwan at home but nothing is ever perfect.
Good points, Euljin. But boneheaded coaching moves like yesterday is what makes me hate this guy. Sixtieth minute of the game, with them leading 2-1, and still a third of the game to go, he subs a forward with defender Kim Nam Il. Clearly, Huh’s goal was to play to defend the lead. I can understand it if there was like five minutes to go or something, but with the second half just started, he decides to go defensive?? As soon as I saw Kim Nam Il going in, I said to my wife, there goes the lead. And it didn’t take long before one sure goal being missed by Nigeria, and then the dumbest penalty by Kim Nam Il who got stripped off the ball and lazily back tackles the Nigerian, costing Korea a victory. It was all predictable. Lucky for Huh, Korea advances. If they hadn’t, Huh’s face would be all over the Korean papers today asking why the hell did he make that stupid decision to put Kim Nam Il in there, when the guy has been defensively wretched. It doesn’t make any sense to put an over the hill defender who can’t defend.
SBS has England and Slovenia on the regular station. They’ve put the US and Algeria on their “World Cup’ Channel, which for me is channel 59, and is so fuzzy and scrambled I can barely see who has the ball. This is torture – I wish they’d have had the games the other way around.
You know, I think they should just eliminate the concept of offsides. Basketball doesn’t need offsides. It might add another strategic aspect to the game.
Even if they did go to video replay offsides would not come into play. If the flag goes up and the whistle blows there is no way that the call could be reversed. The defenders could rightfully argue that they stopped play at the whistle.
I could see it possibly being used to determine if the ball crossed the line on close plays (ie France/Korea).
Kim Nam-il’s not really a defender, more of a defensive midfielder. I’m not necessarily going to argue the substitution with you as it’s been said they’d be better off with Kim Yu-na in there and to give away a penalty five minutes after you’ve been brought on to shore things up is never clever. But the thinking goes something like this. They were playing 4-5-1 anyway. Yeom Ki-hun was dropping into the midfield for cover and leaving Park Chu-young alone up front. I didn’t think Yeom had had a particularly inspiring game up until that point and he’s the right man to sacrifice at that point in the match. On a usual day you’d prefer to have Kim Nam-il hoovering up in front of your back four than Yeom floating around not really knowing what he’s supposed to be doing. Kim Nam-il is the guy that got the job done in qualifying.
What else could Huh have done? If he brings Lee Dong-guk on you know he isn’t going to get back and help with the defending and Kim Bo-kyung hasn’t exactly got a lot of experience in high pressure situations. If he had Cho Won-hee or Gu Ja-cheol available on the bench maybe that would’ve been a better switch, but he didn’t. Look at it as a comical situation, he comes on to help defend, he screws up, they get away with it. Life goes on.
If you’re defending a lead and the opposition is pushing players up then it often doesn’t help much to play with two out and out strikers as they both end up covering the same wide open spaces on the break-aways and you risk being a man down where it really matters. Parking the bus is always criticized when it goes wrong but when it goes right you get people like Gangpeh blowing bubbles up your ass.
Huh is the most successful South Korean born World Cup coach of all time. Hate him if you like, but at the end of the day that probably says more about you than it does about him.
Wow, that was an unreal finish for the USA – 91st minute before being eliminated. And they were robbed of that goal in the other game, costing them a victory and possibly facing elimination.. yet they still win the group, topping England. Full credit to the USA and their team spirit of never giving up.
Dempsey missed like three point blank range shots. The final one he dribbled the ball directly into the keeper… luckily it bounced out and Donovan cleaned up. But come on…
Altidore gave the Algerians a tough time, and they were forced to foul him several times.
Donovan is the spirit of that team though, just like he scored the momentum changer against Slovenia.
Too bad for Slovenia. What a way to go out. Won’t be able to see their funny striker with his 1920′s ‘extra on Titanic’ meets the Great Gatsby hair do.
The final one he (Dempsey) dribbled the ball directly into the keeper
At least he didn’t kick it 6 metres above the net – would’ve been difficult for Donovan to finish. Dempsey had a bloody lip ya know. It’s tuff to perform when crippled like that. Hope he can recover for the next match.
The Goat….oh yeah there is that small problem. So I guess World Cup soccer has to live with these kind of utterly bullshit calls forever and ever. What a pity.

Didn’t see it, but happy with the result! Be interesting to see who they play next.
Already decided. They play Uruguay on Saturday. Argentina play Mexico.
Will have to tighten up the back end for next game – I don’t think they will face such horrendous finishing again.
Unless of course England gets through to the round of 8 then they should be fine.
Watching the French news this morning – what a fiasco.
From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank the French team for making England look like over-achievers. (And an honourable mention to Italy, too.)

Argentina will win the Cup. There’s no way anyone can stop them, the way I see it.

That batch was docile, new batch mutinous.

Altidore just missed a point blank shot over the bar..arrgh..
Halftime.. With England leading, US needs a win to advance, but tied at 0.
Is this another bad “offsides” call? My oh my. So what is FIFA’s excuse for not bringing in video replay?
Even if they did go to video replay offsides would not come into play. If the flag goes up and the whistle blows there is no way that the call could be reversed. The defenders could rightfully argue that they stopped play at the whistle.
I could see it possibly being used to determine if the ball crossed the line on close plays (ie France/Korea).
cm,
Kim Nam-il’s not really a defender, more of a defensive midfielder.
Oh no US kicked it off the goal post again… get a goal already.
This time the guy probably was offsides but it was very close. US has had some very good chances, but hasn’t knocked it in yet.
US putting on the pressure
As much as i hate admitting it if the shitbags don’t take this game home, there’s really no justice in this world.
England should lead 4-0
Another free kick for the US … lots of opportunities.. no goals. .
They fouled Altidore on a break away. Free Kick coming.
sailed it over the top…. oh geez.
Gosh it’s Beasley … offsides twice in a row.
Oh My GOD,, GOALLLL
Wow.. minutes left in the game
You’re kidding right? Baduk says it’s a conspiracy, and I love conspiracies, but this is just a miracle.
LANDON DONOVAN IS AN AMERICAN HERO!!!!
It’s OVER……. USA USA USA USA
MY PREDICTION HELD TRUE!!! USA WINS THE GROUP!!!
Incredible….. no time left … Donovan gets the rebound off the keeper.. .awesome .. But it was about time, they missed so many chances.
WOOHOO!!!!!! YES!!!! YES!!!!!! YES!!!!!
And thank you, USA, for sparing us a potentially nasty tie against Korea in the quarter finals
OHHHHHHHHH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
LANDON DONOVAN IS AN AMERICAN HERO!!!!!!!!!!
USA!
Wow, that was an unreal finish for the USA – 91st minute before being eliminated. And they were robbed of that goal in the other game, costing them a victory and possibly facing elimination.. yet they still win the group, topping England. Full credit to the USA and their team spirit of never giving up.
Once of the best tripping contests I’ve ever seen.
Indeed. They may actually be worse than Korea in finding the back of the net.
Donovan came through in the clutch, but, to me, Cherundolo was the Man of the Match.
I’m surprised Donovan is still playing. This is his third World Cup, or is it fourth? Did he not score against Korea in 2002?
cm,
Donovan, A.H. is only 28 years old. He could probably play again in 2014.
That was Clint Mathis.
Donovan and Beasley were both on the US attack in 2002.
