What not to bring fishing: Automatic weapons and rocket launchers

by robert neff on May 26, 2010

Mr. Marmot has covered the darker news so I thought I would post something a little lighter…..

In Rotterdam, Five Somali’s charged with the attempted  hijacking of the Samanyolu, a Dutch Antilles-flagged ship, have declared that they were the victims.

Farah Ahmed Yusuf, 25, accused the cargo ship of attacking the Somalis after engine failure had forced them to abandon their shark fishing expedition and seek help.

“The intention was to fish,” he said.

“As we came closer, we put our hands in the air. While we had our hands in the air, they shot at us. They attacked us.”

Another accused man, Sayid Ali Garaar, 39, said: “We were not pirates, we were fishermen. There were no weapons.”

But that is not what the  Samanyulo’s crew says.  They claim the “suspected pirates” shot at the vessel with automatic weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

I don’t know about any of you, but when I go shark fishing, I always remember to bring Gordon’s Fisherman brand automatic weapons and RPG launcher. You know, in case the sharks shoot back.

Maybe they were just playing with themselves,,, as Somalis are known to do on balmy weekends floating on the Indian Ocean….so the “fishing” rods were not really what thy appeared to be?

Maybe they were fishing Texas-style…? But doesn’t that require dynamite?
