Canada, Lesbians and Hyundai, Oh My!

A Canadian commercial for the Hyundai Elantra featuring two attractive young ladies who may or may not enjoy the company of other women is, it would seem, getting a good deal of attention:

That’s hot.

Anyway, according to this post at the, uh, National Post, some believe the ad — or, more to the point, US intolerance of gay folk — has led Hyundai Canada to sever ties with Toronto-based advertising firm Bensimon Byrne, the creator of the ad.

Frankly, I don’t see how this would be that controversial in the US. Can’t speak for women, of course, but I’m pretty sure even the most homophobic of men won’t particularly object to this.

UPDATE: Who knew Hyundai was this progressive?

Did I misinterpret this? I thought the woman assumed the owner was a man and left him her number.

Mbreen, the first woman may or may not have assumed the owner was a man, but the lesbian part of this comes when the owner of the car sees that note with the lipstick and looks around very happy!

The funny part is this gets blamed on imagined (projected?) American homophobia when in fact Hyundai simply dropped the ad agency in favor of Hyundai-owned subsidiary Innocean. Yep, big conspiracy there.

And the misogynist from a red state says?

Damn Canadians…

So, is the point to try to attract professional women to a traditionally ‘man’s’ car, which is black? I don’t know if it would be very effective if the ad also claims that professional women are all attracted to the same gender. Who’s the target audience here? Men?

Definitely men and youngish people in general…trying to pull the lipstick lezzies trick methinks they’re trying to convey a cool party image for their cars.

Wedge is probbably right here, i don’t think the main demographic of Hyundai clientele is anything close to homophobic, especially if homosexuality involves fresh, hot, party animal-looking women

So, homosexual men in America are drawn to heterosexual women having vicarious sexual relationships with homosexual women in Canada that drive heterosexual men’s cars from Korea?

- Are you sure that’s a woman?

Doesn’t surprise me. Wife says gay isn’t popular in Korea. Yet, every guy on TV seems to be more effeminate than the next… I know the Andro thing is popular in Japan; but I somehow thought Koreans were more macho… I guess they were just playing butch after all…

Next step is Pendleton shirts and keys hung on the left side of the belt, eh?

‘Wife says gay isn’t popular in Korea. Yet, every guy on TV seems to be more effeminate than the next’

the first sentence actually explains the second.

it’s funny how easily a western man’s manhood is threatened.
