Hyundai Issues Recall, Doesn’t Pull Toyota

by Robert Koehler on February 26, 2010

in Korean Economy

A front-door latch problem has prompted Hyundai to issue a recall of their new Sonatas (which look really cool, BTW) in the US:

The recall, which will become effective in March, as has been shared by the automaker, was a direct response to a few customer complaints. Hyundai added that no reports of accidents or injuries have come to light yet.

Looks like Hyundai got in front of this one, unlike a certain other company:

“The news could have been more serious, but the market liked the fact that Hyundai Motor acted fast to address the issue”, said Chung Myoung-gi, a market analyst at Samsung Securities.

Good thing, too, because as some seems to be wondering whether Toyota’s problems in America might be about more than just cars.

Anyway, the Chosun warns Hyundai that it’s not immune to the woes befalling its Japanese competitor.

I think it’s gonna be about 47k car recall at the end of the day. Cars mostly in Korea and a few thousand in the U.S.

In other interesting Korean automotive related news, the GM Chevy Cruze is now being manufactured in Ohio’s Lordstown plant. 1.4 liter turbo charged engine will provide 40 mpg.

The Chevy Cruze is the GM Daewoo Lacetti. It was primarily designed by Opal (now no longer owned by GM) and Daewoo.

Oops. Errors.

It’s Opel, not Opal and it’s still owned by GM.

The Germans don’t seem to happy about that.

In other words, Hyundai gets good PR and millions in free advertisement for the cost of replacing a cheap part on a few thousand cars.

PS. Not criticizing Hyundai one bit. I was starting to wonder if car companies were all run by morons since none had jumping on that once in a life time opportunity to score major points with consumers.
