Kim Yu-na Scores World Record

by Robert Koehler on February 24, 2010

Kim Yu-na scored a world record in the women’s figure skating short program with a 78.50.

Will post video when I find it.

Here’s the video (HT to commenter):

Phew! I’m just glad she didn’t cave in to pressure after watching Mao get such a high score. It obviously wasn’t a coincidence that they put Mao right before Yuna’s turn, right?

Nevermind. Wrong vid.

4 bumfromkorea February 24, 2010 at 2:39 pm

wow, 4.72 point difference to Asada… and Rochette has 6.60 on 4th placed Ando.

Well, I guess it really is Kim’s gold to lose… and all three are virtually guaranteed a medal given the point difference.

5 JW February 24, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Knowing how much brand perception bias plays such a critical role in wine ratings, I have to wonder if the same is true for figure skating too. How much of a built in advantage is it for Yuna that she has such a strong reputation for turning out big performances? But I guess you can argue it’s all part of the game that everyone’s gotta play, so nothing too unfair about it.

6 WangKon936 February 24, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Although Yuna got the highest score, her skate had a few minor hiccups in it. Nothing major, but methinks that the Japanese netizens will be out in full force with the slow mo on youtube…

7 Robin Hedge February 24, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Congrats to Yuna!

8 pawikirogii February 24, 2010 at 4:20 pm

9 pawikirogii February 24, 2010 at 4:22 pm

sorry, wrong thread. congrats to yuna.

10 SomeguyinKorea February 24, 2010 at 4:30 pm

She did skate better, but the whole idea that you can score a world record on a judged event is just plain ridiculous. If anything, the new scoring system makes it easier for judges to make arbitrary decisions.

11 SomeguyinKorea February 24, 2010 at 4:39 pm

“Nothing major, but methinks that the Japanese netizens will be out in full force with the slow mo on youtube…”

It would be a foolish thing to do because any fan of Kim Yuna could just as easily make a video in of the two landing their jumps side by side in slow motion. As much as Asada skated well, she wasn’t the better skater.

12 bumfromkorea February 24, 2010 at 4:41 pm

For people who resides within the area under the dark, evil, ominous cloud that is NBC olympics coverage, Kim’s performance is on their website along with Nagasu’s (whose performance was, while not as good, is quite fun to watch).

13 SomeguyinKorea February 24, 2010 at 4:45 pm

One thing…Is it just me or is the level of competion pretty low? I seem to remember that the competition was tighter. I remember there used to be several skaters who could win gold. Now, there are just one or two, maybe three, that are pretty good while the rest can’t seem to do a routine without falling down.

I guess you aren’t aware that most analysts agree that the Russian who got silver in the men’s competition should have won gold.

Korean newspapers report on the internet proxy wars that are going on between Japan and Korea, through Kim Yuna and Asada Mao.

http://www.newdaily.co.kr/html/article/2010/02/24/ARTnhn41244.html

http://news.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2010/02/24/2010022401750.html?Dep0=chosunmain&Dep1=news&Dep2=topheadline&Dep3=top

These describe how Japanese netizens are behaving. Some were noted for their wishing and rambling “fall fall, roll over, fall fall, trip and fall and roll over” during Kim Yuna’s performance. Once Kim’s score was announced, the Japanese internet sites exploded with comments of Koreans bribing the judges and buying the competition. The report in Chosun’s article noted how Korean netizens were taking the high road.

This is why I don’t watch nor care about this sports. Not only is it boring to watch, the overt nationalism on both sides of the sea dirties up the sports.

20 keith February 24, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Congrats to Kim Yu Na, but saying that the Winter Olympics are boring as hell, I really don’t care and don’t understand why anyone would. I’ve maybe watched about 5 minutes of the whole thing. What I don’t understand is why Koreans (or anybody, for that matter) actually cares?

Compared to the WC which starts soon, the winter olympics are as about interesting as watching paint dry.

21 John from Daejeon February 24, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Good for her, but “world record?” Maybe partial world record, as a good chunk of it doesn’t even freeze over in winter. There are over a billion people in India, but just how many are participating in these “world” games?

And if they can have figure skating in the “winter” olympics, where’s the ballerina competition for the “summer” olympics?

22 Arghaeri February 24, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Probably more than participate in the World Series ;-)

As noted before India is not really the best example, its got a lot more snow and mountains, and more of it is frozen over than for example the UK.

and for that matter the ice skating used to be part of the summer olympics

23 chiamattt February 24, 2010 at 11:31 pm

It’s be awesome if Yuna and Asada were lesbian lovers.

24 seouldout February 24, 2010 at 11:34 pm

That I’d watch.

25 Richardx February 24, 2010 at 11:34 pm

She and Mao were great but under the radar the VERY young Americans did a terrific job.
Bloody nose and all.

26 gangpehmoderniste February 24, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Guys are you 14 or something ? Lesbian sex is boring as shit to watch on screen, even more so in real :)

27 seouldout February 24, 2010 at 11:58 pm

…the overt nationalism on both sides of the sea dirties up the sports

The origin is dirty, no matter what the IOC preaches. The best part of sport is the nationalism. Milwaukee versus Cleveland…who give a fuck?! Chelsea versus Galatasaray…that’s more like it, bring it on! But still not good enough. And what happened to the battles on the terraces? India versus Pakistan…torch the trains! USA versus USSR…do you believe in miracles?! And it wasn’t even in the medal round. Is there anything more exciting for a Korean than a match versus Japan? Only if there’s a bit of blood mixed in.

28 cm February 25, 2010 at 12:07 am

The article says

“역시 김연아”…응원 시민 감격의 눈물
(“Once again Kim Yuna… citizen supporters shed emotional tears”)

http://news.hankooki.com/lpage/society/201002/h2010022414434021950.htm

It goes on to describe how Kim’s performance has brought tears of joy and pride to the nation of Korea. Korea fighting! Everyone has their tissues on hand and crying with pride and joy for Kim and the Koreans.

I wonder what will happen if she doesn’t win it.

29 gangpehmoderniste February 25, 2010 at 12:10 am

Add to that list having the chance to share some good sportsmanship and world peace promotion moments with the Bad Blue Boys of the Dinamo Zagreb

I still hate judged sports though.

Here’s an NBC interview/introduction of Kim Yuna.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W60-FX3zM0

Her English is pretty good for a native Korean. Where did she have the time to learn pretty good English while so busy practicing.

32 JW February 25, 2010 at 1:23 am

Ohhh man i’m seeing the replay of Lee Seung Hoon winning 10000 m with the koreans commentating and these guys are just hilarious. 올림픽 정신! 스포츠 정신! You gotta see it to believe it. Alot of koreans seem embarassed by these guys but I say fuck that, its mad entertaining and that’s good enough for me.

33 WangKon936 February 25, 2010 at 1:24 am

cm,

It’s called “immersion.” It’s the most effective way to learn a foreign language. She has spent a lot of time in an English speaking country the last couple of years.

Hey listen… I’m not going after the Japanese people. There are many out there who just appreciate good figure skating, etc. However, there are some Japanese netizens (probably unmarried males) who just have way too much time on their hands…

40 lastnamekim February 25, 2010 at 2:21 am

Wangkon, you’re probably getting negative points because you really don’t have to try to be too impartial when it comes to supporting Koreans (as I noticed you sometimes do). Your comment about Yuna having “minor hiccups” was probably not a qualified statement (despite the Japanese critique you posted). Remember, the judges there watch the replay closely before they award the points and even Scott Hamilton explained it in slow motion and said she should get the full credit for her spins and landing. I’m not saying that judging of this nature is without its biases and subjectivity…but after her performance, it seemed that most impartial critics only agreed with the scoring.

41 pawikirogii February 25, 2010 at 2:32 am

ps if we were in the chosun dynasty, i’m sure thekorean would be a 대감.
;-)

42 JW February 25, 2010 at 2:43 am

Sure, as long as he wasn’t born as a lowly 백정. I’m watching the 사극 drama 제중원 right now (i’m almost giving up on it…it kinda sucks) but one very amusing scene was where the 배정 main character, while having posed for a while as a 양반 doctor in training, is asked to provide his blood for sampling purposes, and he is shocked to find out that his blood is no different from others.

43 WangKon936 February 25, 2010 at 2:47 am

Well…. I’m actually not trying to look impartial. I believe it wasn’t Kim’s best effort. Probably the World Championship was. I think Mao’s skate was cleaner… IMHO.

However, I do think it’s rather ridiculous that Japanese Netizens try to play the judge and critique her skate like they do… They also tried to apply the same principle to evaluate military hardware. In top and bottom cut aways they compared a Korean tank firing its cannon to a Japanese tank firing it’s cannon and by virtue of a smoother suspension they stated that the Japanese tank’s cannon was by virtue “better.” Well, I just stated the simple fact that the Korean tank had the L55 gun, which had twice the range of the Japanese tank’s L44 gun… so regardless of how “smoothly” the Japanese L44 gun operated, the Korean tank can kill the Japanese tank before the Jap tank’s shot could even reach it. Japanese netizens were pretty silent after that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTPVaxFUzLM

As their nation declines, the Japanese are making some wierd excuses for themselves. To be completely honest, this is not something that I take pleasure in seeing.

44 yuna February 25, 2010 at 2:59 am

I hope we wouldn’t celebrate too soon. Kim Yuna’s only just started to manage a perfect long program recently – she was always much ahead in the short program, only to land on her bum many times in the long program, sometimes winning despite that, but sometimes not.
Anyway, she’s a already a winner many times over because she is truly a champion. She should skate for herself only, and if she wins, feel happy, if she doesn’t, and ends up medal-less, she should still feel happy about it because she is already a champion anyways.
Wangkon, I think there are netizens who let things get to their heads with too much time on their hands everywhere, Japan no exception. Best not to highlight it because that only induces the weird netizens here to come out to retaliate, and counter-retaliate as we see on TMH often.

45 pawikirogii February 25, 2010 at 3:01 am

a lot of westerners think koreans don’t like to talk about slaves and the basic mistreatment of a large percentage of the population but they don’t know what they’re talking about. i think koreans are rather honest about that in their sa-guk. anyway, i gave up on the ‘return of iljimae’ and decided to watch ‘yi san’ instead. why not have a look? as i’ve said before, if you’re in the states, you can watch for free in hq at dramafever. have a good day.

ps wangkon, you’re never gonna win w this crowd no matter how fair you try to be. i know you’re mellow but keep that in mind.

46 pawikirogii February 25, 2010 at 3:07 am

pss wangkon, do you know what made me turn off my comments? a japanese nationalist told me she learned at uni that koreans didn’t have the ability to make wheels. when i showed her the schematic of the hwacha, she started talking about davinci envisioning a helicopter but that that didn’t mean he could make it. i decided i didn’t need to argue w such types and closed the comment section.

47 JW February 25, 2010 at 3:20 am

Oh damn, this time Yuna goes before Asada. Advantage Yuna? I say yes.

48 WangKon936 February 25, 2010 at 3:24 am

Listening to NPR on the way to work they interviewed a Japanese executive who spoke anonymously regarding the Toyota recall problems. Let me paraphrase:

“We didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just a couple of problems. The whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. There is nothing wrong with our system. The ‘Toyota Way’ is still the best in the world.”

Talk about blindness…. It’s sorta sad.

50 Gyeonggi Doh February 25, 2010 at 9:56 am

Just watched Lee Seung Hoon celebrating as the Dutch skater got DQ’d in the 10,0000m. Kind of reminiscent of Ohno’s words and actions after the two Korean skaters crashed out in the 1500m. Those same words and actions that got the Korean netizens up in arms. Just saying…

She’s been training in Toronto since 2006, that’s why.

53 SomeguyinKorea February 25, 2010 at 11:16 am

“However, I do think it’s rather ridiculous that Japanese Netizens try to play the judge and critique her skate like they do… ”

I think the Korean media is ridiculous for making blanket statements based on the internet comments of a few 13 year-old Japanese.

“Well, I just stated the simple fact that the Korean tank had the L55 gun, which had twice the range of the Japanese tank’s L44 gun… so regardless of how “smoothly” the Japanese L44 gun operated, the Korean tank can kill the Japanese tank before the Jap tank’s shot could even reach it.”

That’s a pretty pointless argument. South Korean and Japan are as likely to start a war with one-another as the Vatican and Lichtenstein.
Besides, when I was in the military, I was trained to take out tanks at a distance that far exceeds the range of their guns. Yes, tanks are just for show.

54 PineForest February 25, 2010 at 12:24 pm

I just watched women’s short track, and I’m pretty sure it’s time for death threats against a judge.

55 butt darts February 25, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Hi,

WangKong, re #6 and 34, I’m sure that this is my Japanese bias speaking, but I did think that the comment about the reaction of Japanese netizens was slightly classless. Sure it’s true, but I suspect that Korea, like any other modern nation, has its fair share of Internet idiots who react immaturely to national sporting defeats (and victories). Imagine the tables being turned – Japan beats Korea in a heavily-hyped sporting event, and I make an offhand observation about how a certain Korean Internet contingent might react. I wouldn’t exactly be coming off as a gracious winner, would I?

I mean, it’s not a big deal. I’m sure that Canadians hockey fans will be a lot more insufferable if they win the gold medal. But I just thought this would help explain why that post may have been viewed negatively.

FTR, I have a Japanese friend who is a genuine fan of figure skating as a sport (yeah I don’t get it either), and she was thrilled with Kim Yuna’s performance. She couldn’t stop tweeting about how amazing it was. But then again, I have another friend who has great taste in music but is somewhat of a nationalist idiot, and he was fuming about how corrupt the whole thing is. So, uh, yeah. I sometimes wonder why I’m friends with him, but we get along just fine as long as his rather appalling nationalist views don’t enter the discussion.

56 seouldout February 26, 2010 at 2:14 am

58 SomeguyinKorea February 26, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Well, I’m calling it. Kim Yuna just got the gold. She has a very high score. It looked Asada would get a better score, but she missed her step near the end of her routine and ended with a lower score. Rochette just made a mistake. I don’t even need to wait and see her score to know she won’t beat Kim Yuna’s 250.

59 SomeguyinKorea February 26, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Oh, and I think the SBS commentators are showing great professionalism.

60 bumfromkorea February 26, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Oh, and I think the SBS commentators are showing great professionalism.

Sarcasm? ‘Cause I heard one of the NBC commentators saying the South Korean broadcasters were crying.

A friend’s take on the competition. “Asada Mao is a once-in-a-century genius, and Kim Yun-Ah is a once-in-a-millennium genius. It would have been better if one of them was born 4 years after the other.” She’s a huge Asada fan.

On a side note, Mirai Nagasu is going to be a monster @ Sochi. Injuries + relative inexperience + nosebleed and STILL placed 4th? Overshadowed by Kim’s 23.06 point lead over Asada, perhaps, but she’s going to be a big name in 4 years (less than that considering world championships).

GERRY-SAN, HOW YOU FEEL?

66 SomeguyinKorea February 26, 2010 at 7:51 pm

“Sarcasm? ‘Cause I heard one of the NBC commentators saying the South Korean broadcasters were crying.”

Not on the air, they weren’t. They were very professional when Asada made a mistake, they didn’t gloat like some of other SBS commentators. As a matter of fact, they sounded genuinely disappointed since she had been doing so well up to that point. I take they are true fans of figure skating.

“Goddamn she was awesome. ”
Actually, I didn’t think she was that great. I’ve seen her skate better. But, she did show a great deal of sang-froid under the immense pressure she must have been.

67 SomeguyinKorea February 26, 2010 at 7:51 pm

…but, she was the better skater, by far.

68 JAmerican February 27, 2010 at 2:19 am

Yuna deserved the gold, but not by 20+ points compared to every other top skater in the world. Koreans who can’t suspect that are simpletons. And she was not the better skater in the short program, she looked pail when she finished.

btw, I am a Kim Yuna fan but not so sure after this competition spoiled the fun, she no longer looks beautiful to me with that smirk on her face. prancing around in James Bond songs like a slut who wants to bunker up with white men (joke I don’t really care), but I think some Asian should sue Yuna’s organization for putting up such a racially biased presentation that Asian chics who dance with white secret service stud themes are winners and deserve to score high scores at the Olympics.

And all y’a Koreans who disagree can just take a hike.

69 2key March 1, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Asada Mao is not a rival for her. She fucked up on Ice. Her anger and lack of confidence made her crying. As you can see the posting before mine, Jamerican said ”she no longer looks beautiful to me with smairk on her face” you know what Americans really like sushi and Asada Mao. but this time they will chance their appetite. this time is good chance to introduce South of Korea.
