‘Erasing the Past to Build the Future’

by Robert Koehler on January 27, 2010

Matthew Lamers and Hannah Chang have run another piece on the redevelopment issue in the Korea Herald, this one focusing on the Inn Daewon, a popular tourist inn that will be gone pretty soon.

Give it a read.

On a (somewhat) related note, I walked around the Seochon (“West Village”) neighborhood to the west of Gyeongbokgung Palace a couple of weeks ago. I never got a chance to do a proper photo essay, but you can see the photos below. Part of the neighborhood — Chebu-dong and some surrounding areas, to be precise — was slated for redevelopment. Seoul City recently announced a plan to preserve some 663 of the old hanok in Seochon, although the Chebu-dong area could still get redeveloped.

Like I said, this probably deserves a proper photo essay, but at least there are explanations on the Flickr links:

Nice shots of a cool neighborhood, as usual.

Oh man, i can’t believe that the Inn Daewon is still even there — i haven’t looked in in awhile — saddened that it’ll close. It was THE classic place for backpack-wanderers, featured as the best flophoue to stay in Seoul in the first Lonely Planet writings on Korea. I stayed there for, hmmm, 2 months i think in Summer 1982, it was w1500 for a shared room and w3000 for a private — seemed expensive, double the rates of Taipei or Manila hostels. Yeah, i remember Mr Kim and Mrs Kang, nice folks… remember on my 5th day how Kang gave me the scribbled message that “she” had called. I played with my first Korean GF in a room of the Inn Daewon, so it’ll always be in my heart… Lawd, she must be 50 now! — i wonder what her life turned out as. Well, well.

Robert, your work is really coming along beautifully.
I like the photo of Hong Nan-pa’s house (#11) since I like his music (봉선화 “For-get-me-not”, 고향의 봄 “Spring in My Hometown”, etcetera). It is a pity that some have taken to slandering his legacy by falsely accusing him of being a collaborator with the Japanese.

Here is a link to a romance he wrote:www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uzyiZMjMHU

I know I’ve asked you this before, but I can’t find the email I had with the info: what plugin do you use to create those galleries?
