Charles Chaille-Long: In the Footprints of Kublai Khan – Pt. 6

by robert neff on January 20, 2010

Finally – the last part of this overly-long series.  Normally I would have a picture with this posting but I do not have my file with me but I encourage those of you who like old pictures to go to the article – even if you are not going to read it – to see the picture.  It is one of my favorite pictures in my collection.

In this last part Charles Chaille-Long describes the women of Jeju and the eunuchs who he described as fat and feminine but not enjoying the same prestige as those in the Middle East because Korean eunuchs “fidelity is not above suspicion.”  It would probably surprise some of you readers to know that Korean eunuchs were often married and had families.  This part also describes his “snake-oil” efforts and Buddhism on the island.  I actually think, and, of course I am biased, that this is the best of the parts.

You can read part 6 here.

Part One                       Part Two                  Part Three                Part Four                     Part Five
