China’s Sonata Killer

by WangKon936 on December 27, 2009

Meet the Chery Riich G5, China’s Camry and Sonata killer and response to increasing inroads into their market by Japanese and Korean automakers.

Chery is of course one of China’s largest domestic car makers.  “Riich” is their “luxury” brand.

Riich with the double i’s?  Bentley, Chrysler and Hyundai Genesis-like logo?  Okay, it’s a little funny now, but something tells me that they will be less funny in 10 years or so.

Too many “i”s, not enough “r”s.

will China evolve toward consumer brand and higher added value capitalism the same way Korea did in the 90′s only on a massive scale ?

I have my doubts, not cos theyre not capable of but cos i think if they keep falling their rural areas and leave too many hundreds of millions of people behind to let the coastal elites chase their dreams of first world hyper prosperity, the country might end up disintegrating.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see China going commie again, slow down their development and try to fix some of the most crass wealth inbalances they currently have.

Remember the Chinese government value capitalism and economic growth only as long as it brings stability to their power not as a positive per se.

Your mileage may vary; but given my bad experiences with a self-destructing Kia, and the “quality” of things made in China sold at my local Walmart, I don’t see this being any more of a “Camry Killer” than the 2012 Saab…

I wonder if they have “Richville” concrete rabbit warrensapatu, too, in front of which to park these?

sort of like driving your Big Magnus [sic] up to the Big Man Club across from the Ramada in Gangnam

Isn’t Chery trying to buy Volvo or Saab? That should make their ambitions easier.

I think you missed one, Robert. To me their logo is too similar with Mini’s. Anyway, all this logo thing is a bit too riich for me. ^^

#6.

Actually the author of the post is WangKon, not Robert.

Looks like somebody combined the front end of a Daewoo Veritas, and the tail end of the SM5 to the body of a NF Sonata.

Considering that one can get a 6 speed manual 2.0 YF Sonata for 19 million Won(a Riich 6 speed manual 2.0T costs about 21 million Won, the high end version costs about 31 million Won), and that the Sonata is a better quality car, I have a hard time accepting whether this car can become a “Sonata killer”

On the other hand it might have a better chance against the Camry and Accord in terms of price, but the people that buy those cars are people who have a lot of money to burn, and price isn’t the only factor. So, IMO they will most probably snub the Riich for the better quality Camry and Accord.

@ #6,

I’ll take that as a compliment… ;)

Oh, and here’s the Mini logo.

They surely do! Better hurry and get your deposit in — the ones that didn’t collapse are going fast!

And hey, I thought we were going to stop talking about my Big Magnus.

Oops, you’re right; it’s just that your abdominal corporation is getting too big to ignore; in fact, it already must be blocking your view.

@7 Oops! My bad. Can’t promise it won’t happen again, though.

@9 As you should. ^^

All very riich, this is. I think gangepemoderniste might be on to something about China needing to take care of the rural areas.
Here’s a good video on it:

Sorry for going OT, but I’d like to say that, if you’re interested in video lectures, then the link in #14 looks promising. It’s part of a video resource of over 600 lectures sponsored by the schools and admin at MIT. I’ve just scratched the surface, but it looks like there’s some interesting stuff there.
