Snowball Fights Aren’t What They Used To Be

by robert neff on December 24, 2009

Remember when you were a kid and you and the neighbors would get into a wild snowball fight?  Some kids brought snowballs that they had allowed to harden in the freezer, others mixed theirs with gravel and, my personal favorite, others used Rover’s droppings to give them that extra-something special.  Apparently they do things different in Washington D.C.

According to SkyNews, “hundreds of people had gathered in the city for the snowball fight on Saturday after organisers used social networking sites like Twitter to advertise it.”  Evidently Officer Baylor, who was off-duty, didn’t get the Twitter and became upset after being struck with a couple of snowballs.  Naturally he did what anyone would……..he pulled his gun.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier viewed the videos of the incident and has come to the conclusion that we all have: “In no way should he have handled the situation in this manner.”

Oh yeah, forgot to tell you guys, one time during middle school, I almost got my ass beaten by some angry old man for chucking a snowball at his van as it was passing pay. Fortunately, I was able to use my swift Herbert Perez taekwondo trained reflexes and get the hell away.

There’s a joke in here somewhere about bringing a knife to a gunfight… but I’m too lazy.

Throwing a snowball at a moving vehicle is unsafe. Pulling out a gun without first identifying oneself as a member of law enforcement is even more unsafe. I hope Lanier gives him a long cooling off period.

Just don’t mess with DC. (We’re already a mess!)

I agree with Police Chief Lanier’s remark on Officer Baylor’s reaction:

“In no way should he have handled the situation in this manner.”

Absolutely right! The correct response to incoming snowballs is not a return shower of bullets. Sure, you might stop a few snowballs that way, but some will get through.

What’s really effective, though, is a flamethrower, and that’s what Officer Baylor ought to have relied upon. He simply forgot his police academy training.

he didn’t shoot the gun, we don’t know if it was loaded…those assholes throwing the snowballs deserve a beating.
