Actually, I’ve seen this world. I don’t make enough money to support this kind of life style, but I’ve seen people who do. Guys do this because they CAN do it. You get swallowed into this if you don’t let your super rich friends know that you are not into this stuff very early on, otherwise it just sucks you in.

I don’t know if people are really surprised. I’d say people just like seeing members of the upper-class or celebrities fall. It’s been like that for hundreds of years. It’s a common theme amongst urban legends, actually.

Actually, groupies are usually introduced to celebrities by “event planners”. The whole thing is pretty well orchestrated.
In China, people get angry with rage and envy when they find out their fave celeb is actually enjoying life and having sex.
