Things Obama Should See in Korea

in ROK-US Issues

Over at ROK Drop, a post about Chosun Ilbo Washington correspondent Lee Ha-won’s suggested itinerary items for President Obama yielded a rather interesting comment by ChickenHead listing things the BHO should see while in town (I’ll quote just the beginning):

Top Things Obama Should See in Korea

(These are just off the top of my head without any deep though so I may get some flack… It won’t hurt my feelings if you make a good case that I am mistaken.)

An efficient airport staffed with friendly and helpful workers with excellent public transportation to and from all population centers across the nation.

A society where all members, regardless of class or regional affiliation, hope for the success of their country and are willing to make personal sacrifices if necessary.

An easy and efficient recycling program that is supported by the vast majority of the population.

A government that encourages national unity rather than one which demonizes patriotism, discourages unifying nationalism and attempts to divide the population so as to play groups off against each other for short-term political gain.

A society that doesn’t glamorize ghetto and thug cultures and doesn’t continuously try to rationalize how they are valuable contributions to “diversity”.

Kushibo gives his own commentary on the list.

This post would not attract the trollz at all. Nope, not at all. A suggestion that Korea could be better than America in some aspects? Nah, the commenters of this blog is way to classy to disparage it.

I thought it was a reasonable list, which Kushibo handles rather fairly — but the nut-job call for Obama to kill himself kind of spoiled it for me.

Is it a doable list on a national level in a free society, that’s the question.

yeah where’s the huffy puffy expat?

4 slim November 20, 2009 at 5:12 am

He’s mostly a figment of your imagination, a rhetorical crutch you use when you can’t debate the issues at hand.

5 pawikirogii November 20, 2009 at 5:51 am

mizar, blueass, vince, bevers, slim, seouldout, weikuboy, aaronm…the list could go and on. no imagination, just reality.

You’re mainly listing people who beat the shit out of you — easily done, but still sisyphean work, because you’re so full of shit — when discussing the issues. Half of them aren’t even expats.

And even you will have to note that I have stated that I agree with most of chicken head’s list.

With apologies to Walter and one of my favorite Big Lebowski exchanges, “Pawi you’re out of your element! Dude, the Expat is not the issue here!”

Ditto Slim’s comments about Chickenhead’s list, to which I would add:

Restaurants, cafeterias, and homes where minimally processed foods from fresh, local ingredients are served to people whose weight falls within a healthy range.

TK,

You give the commenters here at the Hole entirely not enough credit sometimes.

9 Mizar5 November 20, 2009 at 6:55 am

Not so sure about that, TK, our latest troll, pawi was all over it.

10 WangKon936 November 20, 2009 at 6:58 am

Mizar,

I know I’m one of the worst abusers of commas, but what are you trying to say?

11 Mizar5 November 20, 2009 at 7:32 am

I was merely, that is, trying, to,say, oh whatever!

12 Darth Babaganoosh November 20, 2009 at 8:07 am

served to people whose weight falls within a healthy range

Except for the anorexics on “diets”.

Thekorean, you’re better than that. Or at least you used to be. Most reasonable people that comment here can identify the pros and cons of living in each country and be honest about it.

I’ll go ahead and summarize the list that’s linked: Korea’s strength lies in the fact that there are no scary black or brown people to fuck up their society, Roh’s suicide was hilarious, and Obama needs to kill himself as soon as possible.

But by all means, please continue discussing it seriously.

IHBB, I would agree — but the emphasis should be on “most reasonable people that comment here.” There are too many unreasonable people who comment here, and even the reasonable people lose their heads as soon as their pet topic comes up. Not to mention the unnecessary snarks, grandstanding, personal attacks and the like. Frankly, I don’t even know why I even hang out here anymore, because I am so sick of that shit.

the korean, i know.
i never knew what drove people campaigning for banning someone, because i don’t believe in that.
i now wish there is a restraint order i could take out on a certain individual.

Thekorean, I know it sucks, but you need to accept the 1st Nobel Truth and move on to the others because they all take work.

17 Mizar5 November 21, 2009 at 7:15 am

You guys really didn’t bother to even link to it, did you?

The lazy thing to do is to point to it as evidence of Korea’s supremecy.

In fact, it’s a predictably right wing partisan view replete with digs at liberals and topped off with silly comedic irony – ie. beliefs most young Koreans don’t share.

Funny how some of you fell into the trap.
