Little Bangladesh Revisited

by WangKon936 on November 12, 2009

First reported on TMH here, it looks like the Bangladeshis will get their piece of L.A. Koreatown.

According to the article:

At the previous meeting in this yearlong border skirmish, L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge had asked each side to bring three representatives.

“The Koreans cheated,” he said. “They brought seven. But the Bangladeshis cheated more. They brought 37.”

Charming.

To diffuse potential friction, L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge walked around the areas of contention, with contingents of Koreans and Bangladeshis following closely behind him, in the slightly absurd scene of literally pointed out areas as “Koreatown” and “Little Bangladesh.”

The Bangladeshis wanted 50 city blocks within Koreatown.  They got 16.  They were not happy at the end, but an Examiner article explains why this might actually have been generous at the end of the day.

I bet the Indians are scratching their heads and wondering why the Bangladeshis get their designation when the much larger Little India was denied even a street sign, twice!

I think we need a post about the latest episode of 미녀들의 수다. The tension between korean college girls and the foreigner girls was was just wonderfully palpable!!

Korean girl: Short men just suck. They just suck.
Foreigner girl: It’s important to have open mind. He can be the best man for you in every other respect.
Korean girl: I don’t care if he’s Jang Dong Geun. If he’s short, it’s over.
Korean girl: I heard in France, they make fun of the short president too. So it’s not just us.
French girl: (Grrrrrrrr, stupid cunt bitch)

That’s literally how the show went. Pure awesomeness.

AAAhahahahah

Yeah, the Korean ladies can be rather superficial, particularly about height. But Korean men are superficial in their own ways too.

‘Yeah, the Korean ladies can be rather superficial, particularly about height.’

that’s most women, not just korean ones.

Apparently the airheaded Hongdae student was merely reading a script written for her. Misuda is a fake show, I guess.

6 JW November 13, 2009 at 2:36 am

Hmnn yeah I was wondering if that was the case, cuz she sounded way too aggressive and robotlike

I should rename this post to “Open Thread # 125.”

Even though I’m average height in the U.S., I’m glad I feel above-average in Korea. So I think the standard for “tallness” but more importantly the bar at which “short” guys is defined, is much different than what we expect.

let’s face it: if you’re like 165 cm guy, you are just gonna strike out just about everywhere, except at middle schools (assuming you’re like 12 and not 32)

They can have 16 blocks to call Little Bangladesh. They’re still in Korea town. Try changing the entire region’s name. Then it’s on.

11 WangKon936 November 13, 2009 at 6:09 am

t_song,

North American average male height is 5-9. I’d guess that 5-9 is not overly tall in Korea either.

shrug,

They originally wanted 20% of Koreatown. Check this map out:

They have maybe seven businesses?

Solomon, I believe that what you’ve linked to is an instance of South Korean baseball’s traditional flustercluck. It’s used to motivate all of the players to rooster for their own team.

jw,
i never said i was considered “tall” but being 5’9, i’m on above average in korea. in the u.s., i’m exactly average–and if i should be hanging out with taller folks (which is a 50/50 proposition), then i’m considered short.

it’s been posted up here before, but the average height in korea is probably 5’7 maybe even 5’8. but i think there’s a far smaller range korea. probably 90% of men are 5’6 to 5’10.

to look at u.s., you’re probably saying 90% are 5’5 to 6’1 or so.

t_song,

Please don’t confuse me with the dorky guy who’s got a H-Mart gravitar… ;)

I live one block South of “Little Bangladesh” and never even knew it existed until I read an article about it on this website. Furthermore, I drive along 3rd Street every single day.

1) There are more Thai and Mexican stores and restaurants than Bangladeshi ones. There are no more than six or seven Bangladeshi stores.

2) The famous picture that accompanied one of the previous articles regarding this matter, of Korean and Bangladeshi people passing each other by, is extremely misleading as (a) that picture wasn’t even taken in “Little Bangladesh” but at a cultural event, and (b) very few Koreans and Bangladeshi actually walk around in “Little Bangladesh”

16 WangKon936 November 13, 2009 at 8:24 am

Like I said, the Bangladeshis got more than they really deserved.

Solomon,

It was an amateur baseball game played by Korean entertainers including actors and comedians. So the happening was premeditated to entertain spectators.

Here is another clip where Ahn Jae-Uk appeared: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y8yuAcBZLw

What I noticed most was all the signs in Spanish. Name the neighborhood what you will, but I recommend brushing up on your Spanish before you go there.

There is a rumor, actually a joke, that Kim Jeong-Il ordered to attack South Korean battleship because he was so infuriated after watching Misuda’ comment that short men are “losers”.

@ # 4,

I think Korean women are particularly superficial about height. I learned this because I was helping a friend with his business plan on building a Asian American match making web site.

Now, I didn’t do a formal statistical analysis but when compared to Chinese and Japanese ladies, Korean women were not only superficial with height, they were downright greedy. Whereas most Chinese ladies between 5-2 and 5-4 wanted guys at least 5-5 and above, Korean ladies that same height put down at least 5-10! I can understand if a Korean lady who was 5-6 wanted a guy who’s 5-10 or taller, but selecting 5-10 as your minimum criteria if you are 5-2? What is that but greedy (and unrealistic)?

25 JW November 17, 2009 at 3:39 am

I remember chatting with a bunch of my older cousin’s friends, and mentioned to them that I’d be pretty darn happy with a million bux saved at retirement age, and they all looked at me like I’m either stupid or crazy. The philosophy that says you have to shoot for 10 in order to get 5 doesn’t seem all that bad if you ask me.

26 WangKon936 November 17, 2009 at 3:42 am

Well… Chinese women DO aim high… they just have enough wisdom to know that height isn’t the first thing to aim high for.

27 JW November 17, 2009 at 3:57 am

Come on man! You do know that even in America, taller people do significantly better money wise than shorter peeps, right? So much so that Greg mankiw wrote up an entire research paper on it!

28 bumfromkorea November 17, 2009 at 4:35 am

What is that but greedy (and unrealistic)

Not to mention comically uncomfortable for both parties. A friend of mine who’s 4’11” (and a half, as she insisted every time) has a 6′ fiance… for their engagement gift, bunch of us pooled our money and got her a pogo stick.

29 WangKon936 November 17, 2009 at 12:13 pm

I’m curious to hear what yuna has to say on the recent direction of this thread.

30 yuna November 17, 2009 at 12:22 pm

thanks for your curiosity. – the direction ? Northwest?

i’ve fancied short (korean and non-korean) men before. i like them because the ones i’d met were more ambitious than the tall ones (and earned more money) and they usually stand so tall…

my brother is 180cm. i liked buying clothes for him because he is a good looking guy and had a model build (before he got married and got fat)

31 JW November 17, 2009 at 12:51 pm

I have to say, I’m quite often amazed at how tall white/black/hispanic girls can get compared to our asian sisters, and contrary to how gyopo men often think, it’s certainly not a negative feeling that I get. I think this is yet another indicator of my american-ness. :)

32 WangKon936 November 18, 2009 at 6:12 am

I knew it…

http://abcnews.go.com/International/korean-children-pressured-grow-tall/story?id=9074703

Koreans are more height conscious than the norm!
