There doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of love with keeping U.S. troops in Korea, but that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.
According to today’s JoongAng Ilbo, the Eighth Army’s headquarters are not being moved to Hawaii. USFK assets appear to be shuffling around the peninsula (i.e. deeper south), but there doesn’t appear to be anything moved back to U.S. territory (be it the continential U.S. or territories like Guam or Diego Garcia).
Considering all the new infrastructure at Pyeongtaek, the USFK could be around for a long time to come.

Gentleman’s bet that the U.S. Navy had something to say about this.

How unfortunate.
71,000 US troops in Pyongtaek by 2020??
Surprise, surprise.
Funny how NATO’s still around too, 20 years after the Berlin Wall came down.
@ # 3,
AND… their families.
@4,
Yeah, I’m STILL waiting for my peace dividend!

The USFK is fucking stupid, in their factoid – Korea at the beginning of the youtube clip it says… “Accordingly, a Korean person’s stated age will be one or two more years than their age expressed in the western tradition.”
What the hell else do they tell the troops about Korea?
The western tradition? How about “the rest of the world tradition”.
I think this should be “a while,” no? In the title…
I don’t know Adams-awry, I doubt it make alot of a difference.
because U.S govt can’t feed these U.S troops, South Korea is feeding it for them.
Check out this family oriented activity at Camp Humphreys!

Regarding the Camp Humphreys clip:
All I can say is: I’m joining the US army ASAP!!!!!
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia or the suspect of the worse mass killings at a military base went to the same university as Cho, Seung-hui the Virginia Tech. student guilty of the worse university shooting/massacre.
What are you trying to say tbone? That Virginia and Va. Tech are somehow complicit in producing mass murderers? Pleeez! (Classic logical fallacy of the guilt by association variety.)
With the USFK in Korea, the Koreans, instead of spending billions on their own defense, can spend it on other things like the 2014 Asian Games, the neat hubs sprouting all over the place, etc. Which means the Koreans won’t ask the USFK to leave.
On the other hand, it seems that the US government doesn’t want to look like the bad guy by unilaterally dissolving the alliance and pulling out the troops
So yeah, the USFK will be here for a while.
^ Actually, it’s South Korea putting the bills, not America. Didn’t you guys knows US troops in South Korea are on the Korean payroll?
@ # 6,
Given to the top 5% income bracket through tax cuts. What remained distributed via various Congressional pork projects…
