6 Missing in South After NK Dam Unleashes Water Downstream

by Sonagi on September 6, 2009

in North Korea

UPDATE: North Korea has finally admitted to releasing water from the dam and has promised to notify the South in advance before any future water discharges. South Korean officials are dissatisfied with the North’s official response, which failed to acknowledge the six drowning deaths on the Imjin River. The dam is only 25 km from the border.

Six people are reported missing in Gyeonggi-do after the gates apparently opened on an Imjin River dam in North Korea early this morning, sending a torrent downstream and causing water levels to rise quickly by more than 2 meters. Fifteen rescue vessels are searching for the missing six.

A government spokesman is claiming that although there hasn’t been any rain in days, there’s no proof that North Korea had opened the flood gates. I guess the water materialized out of thin air.

Government officials claiming, “It’s not our fault”, and, “I didn’t do it!” ????? wow, how fresh, and original.

Campers. I can only assume they were fishing or too close to the river for safety… or skinny-dipping? In any case, my sympathy to their families…

Curious to know if other than the Imjin and the North Han, if any other rivers flow from North to South with the potential for flood. The Peace Dam was completed in 2005 to protect against the North releasing water through the Imnam Dam, which had happened in September 2005. Curious it also happened in September – wonder if there’s some seasonal motivation to release water during that month. Or if this is just the North seeking to use harassment as a negotiation tool.

So much for a nice brotherly warning. “Dear south Chosun, your people may be in danger around the Imjin River, we have just released a huge surge of water. Ok bye.”

The North will either have to issue a convincing explanation and apology or the only explanation remaining will be that it wanted to remind Seoul of this long existent threat, that of a deliberate and sudden flooding of the city. There’s no reason to adjust water levels at this time of year, especially with a release that doubles river depth without any warning. Attack by flooding has been feared for decades. What a great way to shoot one across the bow at a time like this, with the South openly saying the North’s recent niceness is just a change of tactics, without using conventional weapons.

Just saw some footage of the floods. It’s not the worse I’ve seen, but it was big enough to have swept cars away. I’m surprised there weren’t more victims.

North Korea didn’t just let out a bit of water, that’s for sure.

1. NK is too 쪽팔여 to admit that they cant afford to fix whatever problem they have with the dam or
2. NK is working on another scam to get more money from SK and/or better deal in their nuke negotiations.

As much as they are sick fucks, I dont think they’d dare just do it just to see what happens…then again…

WJK, what is your identity anyway? Who the fuck are you? Just curious as to what your glorious background is.

God, I hope you’re not a Mets fan.

# 12,

Not to speak for him, but in my opinion:

1) Fundamentalist Koreanized Bible Belt Christian.
2) Korean ajoshi in training (pre-Chun Doo Hwan administration style).
3) NY/NJ Korean American.
4) Mets fan.
