2009 Seoul International Jazz Festival in Nakseongdae

by R. Elgin on September 4, 2009

Seoul City is finally sponsoring its own official Jazz festival, featuring real, live Jazz, with many of the best local musicians as well as up-and-coming players from the next generation of players and the legendary master, James Moody.  The festival will be at Nakseongdae Park in Gwanak Gu from October 9 — 11. Musicians performing include  Ronn Branton Quartet (piano), Grace Kelly Quartet (Alto Sax) and the great James Moody (Tenor Sax and flute). Singers will include Malo and Ong-San.

The festival is free so do come out and hear some real music and virtuoso performances for a change.

Back when the wife and I were first dating, going to jazz bars was our thing to do on Saturday nights. I miss those easy, good times. This festival looks like fun and I look forward to checking it out. Thank you, Mr. E., for the heads-up.

And what the fuck is “jaju?” To appreciated JAZZ, you need to bring some musical intelligence to the scene. In Korea, that is as rare as a needle in a haystack.

You are correct “mizar” but sometimes one must take small steps and a festival featuring actual Jazz instead of whatever musical crap someone wants to label “Jazz” is a step in the right direction. Remember too that there are still very few musical critics with any insight or musical-related education writing for the dailies here.

Aw let me be curmedgeonly, Elgin (by the way, isn’t “tounge in cheeck” a distasteful phrase)?
