The government is launching an online system that will allow people to check the authenticity of foreigner ID cards:
The immigration office will launch an online system Tuesday that enables users to check the authenticity of ID cards issued to foreigners.
The system is meant to address a growing number of foreigners who fabricate ID cards for fraudulent deals and overstay their visas, the Korea Immigration Service (KIS) said Monday.
To do a check, the ID number and the date of issuance are required, the office said.
Mind you, this is for foreigners’ benefit, too:
“Fabricated IDs have frequently been used to rent a house, car and open bank accounts, inflicting substantial damage to Korean citizens and dealing a blow to foreign residents here,” an immigration office spokesman said.
“Basically, this is to protect Koreans but expats will also benefit from it because the system will help them restore confidence in making deals with domestic firms and people.”
Right, because local firms and individuals have been reluctant to make deals with foreigners because of the fake ID issue. Thanks!
Anyway, you’ll be able to check your own ID and those of your friends at www.hikorea.go.kr.

Right, they not only don’t address the real reason why foreigners are discriminated against, they also plant the idea that a great number of us are fraudsters…and on top of all that they have the audacity to call it progress.
But, what’s truly ironic is that foreigners have been complaining for years that most Korean websites won’t recognize their ID.
Fake waygook cards?!?!?! I call BS on that. Otherwise, there would have been news stories up the ying yang about it.
Also, some progress. They have been claiming that we could use our cards for online transactions, etc. since 2002 when they changed the format of our numbers!
Don’t you love how this article makes it sound like the pooh Korean citizen is being screwed by the nasty foreigner.
Is Korea the happiest when they are whining? They just seem to constantly whine. There was an article in the papers today, how they pay more than other countries for some articles (electronic ). And whining as usual how they are hard done by. You’d wonder why the average Korean doesn’t whine about how much Hyundai/Kia is charging them for a car, when they virtually give them away in the USA.
Thats it isn’t it no progress, they are able to make a checklist of us, but still can’t link it correctly with the online transaction checklist for locals.
Are they also procucing such a checklist for to check if korean ID’s are legitimate?

If I remember correctly the article claimed that there were less than 200 of these “fabricated ID’s” on the current record. The immigration office either supposes it is extraordinarily incompetent and that there are many more false ID’s out there that have slipped through their “security system”, or else this is making a mountain out of a mole hill. How much damage could 200 illegals cause to the people of Korea?
What about being able to use my ID to register to Korean sites? I’ve tried many many sites that require my id number and all say it’s invalid. I phoned the office in charge of this crap, can’t remember now what office, anyway they told me it’s not for foreigners. I’ve lived in Korea for 5 f**kin years, really?
Yup, really.

Great question! I want to know, too.
