The Dong-A Ilbo reports that North Korea actually charged Hyundai Asan US$15,747 for room and board for their recently released employee who was held hostage detained in North Korea for 137 days.
The North Koreans calculated US$114.9 a day. The detainee, Yoo Seong-jin, apparently stayed at the Janamsan Hotel — which I understand is fairly nice as far as provincial North Korean hotels go. Here’s a Youtube video of the view outside the hotel window:
With a view like that, it’s a miracle Yoo didn’t hang himself. Kaesong looks like an even bigger shithole than Haebangchon.
Anyway, Hyundai Asan plans to pay up when it settles its personal safety insurance account, under which all of its employees in the North are put.
Government officials also say that during his confinement, Yoo kept asking for more rice and bitched a lot about the side dishes. So, notes, the Dong-A, not only did the North treat Yoo rather poorly, but they also charged Hyundai over US$100 a day for it.
North Korea… pure class.

bigger shithole than haebangcheon? surely you jest.
North Korea: Redefining the word “chutzpah” since 1948!
Fuck you… Haebangcheon is nice!
Well, OK then — Haebangchon is a lovely neighborhood.
Looks pretty normal to me. The windows have glass in them, the buses are working, I don;t see trash all over the place nor to I see old drunk men publicly urinating. I’m not saying North Korea is a great place to live, but this video does little to convey it as a shithole.
i’m sorry, i meant to refer to haebangchon as the shithole.
