The quote is from the NYT article. It reminds me of how here in Korea sex segregation is so prevalent in the workplace and classroom. Men and women infrequently sit at the same table to share a meal in the cafeteria or at 회식.
Otaku is indeed a very odd (and creepy) subculture. It’s amazing that PM Taro Aso thought that it could help lift Japan from the recession. I talked about it a little here:
