So… What Is It with Intern Writers and White Guy—Korean Girl Relationships?

by Robert Koehler on July 15, 2009

Intern writer Choe Seon-yeong of Yeoseong Sinmun (Women’s Newspaper) offers her thoughts on the whole white guy—Korean girl controversy.

At least it’s short and not completely stupid.

It does note that a lot of this mess is thanks to a post that has been going around Korean cyberland, purportedly a translation of a post by a foreign English teacher offering helpful tips on Korean women. Can’t seem to find the original English, but then again, I get the feeling there never was an original English version.

I see some of the Anti-ES people made it to the comments section. They’re the ones who can’t seem to let go the incident at Mary Jane bar.

What incident? Where is this bar?

So that Mary Jane bar has since gone out of business and was replaced with a somewhat classy bar with a stage and live musician. Some friends took me there for my birthday (yawn), and what did I see? I saw some guy pouring as much vodka into a Korean girl as possible, all the while attempting to get more frisky with her. It was quite obvious to everyone there that he was trying to get that Korean girl drunk and have sex with her! But it was okay, he was Korean too.

Anyway, this didn’t end up being a very good post. I just found that situation a bit ironic.

Korean racism has clearly found a new target. It used to be the American GIs. Now that they are no longer very visible, it has refocused onto foreign English teachers. The rationale is pretty much the same though – denigrating rambunctious young people on the basis of their sexual urges. Just so long as they are not Korean, that is.

“What incident”?!? Really?

The Goat’s summary…

It’s all about the numbers. There are more Korean girls in Korean than foreign girls (duh). As a result, white dudes have a higher propensity to hook up with Korean girls.

It is really not that difficult to figure out.

Admittedly, my Korean reading is not the best, but I found the article to be well-balanced. The author interviewed a girl hanging out in Itaewon, who showered the area with praise for its diversity and cheaper prices (than Sinsa and Apgu). And a second woman who dated a guy while studying abroad and defended by saying, basically, “It’s my life.”

Kudos to the reporter for actually talking to real people for the story and–gulp–doing some ground work at a club in Itaewon.

Again, it’s worth mentioning that these types of article at Chosun, the MISUDA and this piece–and thusly this issue of WM/AF–register a tiny radar blip (about the same level of interest most Koreans have on the daily life of Ichiro) on the Korean screen.

Looks like White Guy—Korean Girl Relationship fatigue is starting to set in.

I disagree Mizar, I’m out in the suburbs of Seoul, and I still get dirty looks from old men my girlfriend rides on the back of my motorcycle, to the bus stop after a night of sexual exploration. It still clearly bothers a lot of people, judging by the stares.
And the quantity of dirty looks closely correlates with the relative attractiveness of the girl. My current flame is quite attractive, so its a good thing she doesn’t pay those 아저씨s any mind. When we’re in Seoul it’s different, no one seems to care.

I don’t think your girlfriend is attractive. Enjoy your flat-chested, large-faced wookie.
