Chosun.com’s Choi Hee-seon — or at least whoever came up with the headline — seems a tad upset that all the English teachers are doing is protesting her articles without reflection on their own wrongdoings.
Oh yeah, and she’s upset that someone text messaged her calling her a “racist cunt.”
I’ll let you ponder at your own leisure the irony of someone at Chosun.com — the online edition of the Chosun Ilbo — calling on someone to reflect.

What an inappropriate comment. Cunts do not discriminate.
Ohhhh snap. Robert, did you notice that she ain’t listed as an intern no more?
LOL, they promoted her for the good work she done. Very possible.
I hope she upgrades her phone. What a piece of shit!
They should give her a raise – pissing off the foreign louts and vagabonds taking advantage of the pure Choson youth for personal lust and gain is a good thing, isn’t it, whether it’s yellow (oops!) journalism or not? Of course, one can also read about the dangers of foreigners in any conservative US paper.
I hate 주민등록번호 site registration. I bet you could do some fantastic trolling in the comments section of that article. Does anyone’s alien # work to register there?
Actually, the phone is a godd reason to doubt this story also!!
How, many hip Korean women have you ever seen with such a crap phone!!
Arghaeri,
I logged on to make a quick joke about the phone also…you beat me to the punch! That phone is soooo last year…even us barbarian foreigners can see that.
Also, I am a bit confused by the number on the phone. When I send txt msg’s from Korea to Canada, I use 00700. Why is 00700 showing up on that phone? Hmmmm
If you send an SMS to a Korean phone number using Skype with an unverified return number or no return number the call shows up as originating from a random exit node, perhaps that’s what happened?
9 more days of this!
well if anything it might teach someone posting mobile numbers and contact info isn’t bright. I don’t think a few comments is going to improve the perception Koreans have of foreigners though. oh well may as well admit we are invading the country and are here to take over.
step 1. spread English.
step 2. marry into the dominate group.
step 3. take all the good jobs.
step 4. point fingers at new immigrants and call them foreigners.
Have to to laff at teh comment about Korea being different because “Koreans” didn’t immigrate here. Whites are so insideous…
lol
>insideous
“If you send an SMS to a Korean phone number using Skype with an unverified return number or no return number the call shows up as originating from a random exit node, perhaps that’s what happened?”
Nope, 00700 is SK Telecoms international access number, not a random node.
You’re right – 00700 is what I use to make international calls from school.
Sticks and stones, baby.

I don’t know much about this story but I do know a few things about the “English-teacher problem” in Korea.
First of all I’d say that most of the academies (hakwons) are in it for the money, so they are willing to hire anyone. I was an English teacher in Seoul. I was hired and working within a month. I had no prior experience as a teacher. I had no orientation or training. They just gave me some books and said go teach. Most of the hakwon owners don’t even speak a lick of English – what’s up with that?
Secondly there are a lot of foreigners (mostly men) who take advantage of this situation. They are in Korea because it is fun. Maybe they like Asian women or just the culture or a little bit of both, but the bottom line is that most teachers are not there to teach English.
Thirdly, Koreans think it is so damn important for their kids to learn English. They’re willing to let anyone who looks American (sorry Brits, Canadian, Kiwis, and Aussies) teach their kids. They put their kids in academies from noon ’til 9, but that is another issue.
Lastly, there are a lot of Korean girls that are after foreign men, that includes students. Why? status, novelty, immaturity, desire to escape Korea or Korean men, ahh the list could go on.
Bottom line, both parties are to blame here. Korea has to make a huge shift culturally and politically to fix this one. And us foreigners need to be a little more respectable when we are in Asia….especially Korea.
I don’t think it is very accurate to call that lame ‘journalist’ a ‘Racist Cunt’. I think calling her a ‘Stupid racist cunt who indulges in the worst yellow journalism ever seen regarding foreign teachers in Korea’ would be a more accurate description of her.
One could (if they were a racist cunt) easily be forgiven for believing that the origin of the term ‘yellow journalism’ came from Seoul rather than New York!
That guy who was doing the youtube videos is so obviously a fake, I’m sure he’s having a giggle at contributing to making those ‘journalists’ look like a bunch of gullible morons. If they’re not gullible and actually realise that Mr. Youtube Suck my d (fake degree chap) is doing a windup act on them then they are disgustingly lacking in any integrity whatsoever. No serious publication would print the crap they’ve been printing recently.
They’ve shamed themselves more than they have any English teachers. It is indeed they who need to reflect on their sins, or their gullibility.
‘Stupid racist cunt who indulges in the worst yellow journalism ever seen regarding foreign teachers in Korea’
Typical profane comment from lecherous English-teaching scum who couldn’t get laid back home and had to come to Korea.
‘Typical profane comment from lecherous English-teaching scum who couldn’t get laid back home and had to come to Korea.’
^ = Idiot, who doesn’t know the meaning of ‘profane’. What has my comment got to do with religion? In what manner have I ever been lecherous? You sir, are an ‘imbecile’ look that up in a dictionary (you’ll probably need to buy one first) and you’ll see I’m correct.
So it wasn’t Korean man who reported anti-foreign ESL teachers, it was the cunts.
So does this mean foreign ESL teachers have been screwing cunts and dump by the cunts, and now calling Chosun reporter a cunts.
Now I’m thoroughly confused.
Me too. I think KrZ and Koreansentry need some English lessons.
Asian women who likes foreign men are at a disadvantage in Asia, because there are relatively few decent single foreign men there. But if they go to North America, the situation reverses in their favor. Pretty young women don’t have to worry about this as they’re in demand anywhere. Average looking women in their mid to late 20′s can do well in places like Vancouver, and those in their 30′s can do well in the US. America is a very competitive dating environment where even plain looking Asian women in their 30′s would have no shortage of dates.
There’s a lot of flaming going on here about English teachers. Actually, the English teacher thing is a young man’s game. The older you get, the less desirable. I’ have several friends who went abroad to teach in Japan and Taiwan, they’ve all returned to the US before age 40. Like a women’s youth, a young man’s opportunity as an ESL teacher has a time limit on its “best years”. So if you’re in your 20′s, by all means, go abroad! Study abroad, teach ESL, etc. Enjoy your youth with the young and beautiful! Just don’t forget to make an exit strategy ahead, or else you’d find yourself married with 2 kids and working at a dead end job making $9/hr back in the States.
For the older single men, I’d suggest avoiding Thailand unless if you’re Asian. There’s a stigma on being seen with an older western man because of the sex industry. You’re better off to places like the Philippines (not Angeles City).
It may have been my message, as I sent one to that effect when I read the story on Saturday. However, it could have emanated from a number of friends in the region who share similar sentiments. If you remember the whole Daejeon bus incident, the guy involved in that was silly enough to leave his number hanging out and he got what he deserved. I am no longer a teacher, nor am I in Korea, but I spent a good chunk of my 30′s doing that. I did it for the following reasons.
1. In 5+ years in I never, once, sexually harassed or assaulted someone. Nor did any other the hundreds of other teachers that I know. Moreover, the article, predicated on such nonsense, cannot cite a single instance of someone being arrested for this. However, in that time I can think of a good few instances where Korean male teachers were guilty of such behaviour towards there students. The author’s failure to balance her writings to that extent colour her racist.
2. Rather than just drift along in a miasma of boozing and other mischief, I actually made steps to gain qualifications that would benefit both my students and myself. I tutored and mentored fellow workers and sought help from those who knew more. None of this professional development was offered by an employer, ever. All this work was done off the backs of myself and others. Korean teachers, by the other token, were given boundless opportunities to better themselves with the help of our bosses. But rather than picking up on this systemic fault, the racist Miss Choi would rather just be an, errm, racist.
3. Friends and family. My mixed-race (and not half Korean) son who was born in the country was a big part of the reason for me leaving, as I’ve heard things from Koreans about race mixing that, should I be inclined, should have copped them a battering. My wife, who is western-educated and works for a large IGO, was looked down upon for her skin colour and was frequently told her country was “dirty”. Further, friends I have left there make a positive contribution to Korea, pay their taxes and go happily about their lives. No mention of either of these kind of things. I can only assume she is a racist.
4. Cunt. I’m Australian. We use the term as one of affection, i.e. “g’day cunt, how’s it going?” or as one of derision, i.e., “well he’s a truly thick/ugly/obnoxious/tricky/sly/opinionated cunt”. I use the term here strictly in the latter sense. If I have offended her or others sensibilities in doing so, then good, cunt.
No.22 Keith, I rather take boring biology lesson of making babies than taking Enrish lesson from ESL teachers in Sth Korea.
KrZ, an excellent bit of trolling Keith there in 18. Well played.
I wonder if Aaronm down there in Indonesia (if memory serves) would be kind enough to leave his cell phone number here on Marmot’s. As a fellow Aussie, I have a few choice epithets I’d like to 문자 in his direction.
Seriously though, what I am quite curious about is why he, who has mentioned here a number of times that he has left Korea and that his life partner is not Korean, feels so incensed by these (admittedly bad) stories that he is moved to text pithy rebuttals prefixed by international dialing codes.
Mate (also a multi-faceted Aussie word with many and varied shades of meaning), why not just let it go?
The author has my number, she is free to call me or text me back. Funny that you are urging me to let something go, but willing to play the knight in shining armour (or should that be Stockholm Syndrome-Afflicted Moonbat in a Tinfoil Helmet) and launch a few choice epithets of your own at me, rather than abiding by your own words. Tell you what, I’ll let it go if you do, too!
Well there’s no comeback from that, is there? My Stockholm Syndrome is holding me back.
I’m letting go, Aaronm. All the best, mate.
Consider it let go from this end, too. Unless that is you are ever in Jakarta some day and would like to hurl the epithet, “buy us a beer ya cunt” at me. That I will gladly do.
cmm@26- My bullshit detector is set to quite a high level. I though it was quite a jolly jest myself and thought I’d play along. Nobody trolls me. None of you cunts anyway, you’ve not got the smarts for it!!!
Anyway, lets stop dropping the ‘C’ bomb I know Aussies and Brits find it relatively benign, but many North Americans seem to find it rather offensive especially the ladies. Why not use a synonym such as ‘beef curtains’ or ‘bearded clam’ as an alternative?
Calling her a cunt was at least an attempt at communication, I guess. Someone at the Choson Ilbo still needs to explain why consensual dating between non-Korean men and Korean women is a social problem, and needs correction. Aren’t they taking for granted that their readership is racist and will object to such dating? Shouldn’t they at least attempt to make a logical case against inter-racial dating?
love that. i’m going to use it at church this sunday.
31 It’s not that benign in England, as to those particular synonyms – never heard of them so wouldn’t use as an alternative and in any case in the context used it wouldn’t really be a synonym suince the word is used as an insult, and more often to men than women, not literally. I can’t think when I’ve ever used the term on a woman, since then it would be fact rather than an insulting term to a man.
Anyway to not be benign you have to double up in english, i.e. you cunt, your fucker both relatively benign, but you fucking cunt – definately not benign.
In case Robert won’t let my links post (not family fare), you can find some more alternative names if you google: “Bob and Tom Camel Toe Song”
Their song and video was a pretty big internet sensation a few years ago.
As for the general acceptance the C word in anglo saxon, I can personally attest to this, as I will illustrate below.
Then again, the English are strange. They talk to objects. One day I saw an Englishman pick something up and say, “Hello! What have we here?”
His companion replied with a blank look: “I dunno. I really cunt say.”
I got a patent application a few years ago for an electro-vaginal stimulator, one of the stated goals being to enhance the woman’s ability to clench her vagina around her partner’s penis during intercourse for added pleasure. The translator didn’t know what the English word for vagina was and apparently picked a word at random out of his Korean-English dictionary. Quite amusing to see an application for an “electro-cunt stimulator.”
inane
Can I get your version of a “logical” case against inter-racial dating? I’m just dying for some laugh out loud MH entertainment today.
@aaronm
when you send text messages or e-mails, does the recipient also get that sexy thumbnail photo of yours? kkkk
Arghaeri/Mizar5 is same bearded bivalve posting twice. Any supposed “conversations” between them should be viewed as the babbling of a schitzophrenic c**t.
Vince, WTF brought that on. I’ve made three comments on this post none of them in response to Mizar. [Until my next comment].
a) I am not the same as Mizar
b) I am not a calm, oyster or any other form of bivalve
c) as noted above there has been no such conversation in this post
In summary it seem the only fucking cunt here is you
“His companion replied with a blank look: “I dunno. I really cunt say.””
You seem to have a problem with your english local yokel comprehension skills. There is no way what you heard was cunt in the context/example you have given.
What you heard was a local contraction of “couldn’t”
Sorry Mizar5: I do read more than one thread and may have put the comment in the wrong one. I’m probably not the only one guilty of such a maneuver. I have no proof to back up my claim (and it may be impossible) but I strongly suspect I may be correct.
You’re on a loser then, as anyone who’s been here for a while would know, not to mention that’s a pretty sad attempt to prove your point by apologising to Mizar rather than me and hoping to get a confirmation of your totally ridiculous theory.
Still I guess its marginally better than JW who insisted I was a woman and was so enamoured that asked me on the hole if I’d like to go for a coffee sometime if I was in the US!!!
I know what you’re talking about, vince. No I don’t. Arghaeri is my British dopelganger. I am a NY/Taegu you boo nam.
Seriously, vince. I already have a legion of sock puppets, which include NK, wjk and t_song who comply with all my requirements, and make me look good by discrediting their so-called arguments. What would I do with Arghaeri? I can’t argue with the guy because he makes sense. I’m afraid I can’t really put him to use. He’s just an online friend.
You on the other hand are another of my alteregos whose purpose is to throw people off the trail. Nice job.
I guess now we’ve had this conversation, you are with your deep intellectual analyis coming to the realisation that you are in fact imaginary and are just one half of a schizophrenic bivalve posting twice
Shit, Mizar, clear evidence that you me and Vince are 1/3 shares of a multipersonality disorder bearded Tri-valve.
Vince, you’ll have to check the thread on North Korea for my answer.
We don’t have no bearded bivalves on Mizar 5. I suspect vince is from Mars.
Once again, it’s the continual conflation of the issues that gets me.
Yes, it’s true that over half the teachers here are losers and/or in it for sex and money; but, no, that does not mean they are sexually molesting kids, which is a vile insinuation, nor does it mean there is anything wrong in itself with either sex between consenting adults or earning money. Yes, it’s true that there are quite a few here with fake or no degrees; but, no, that does not apply to the vast majority nor does it really have anything to do with the ineffectiveness of EFL teaching generally, *NETs’ competence in their own language (!!), or the scarcity of teachers with real teaching qualifications like PGCEs or even TESOL certificates.
Yet Koreans seem to read articles that say X (and slimily insinuate Y), then turn around and say Y is true ‘because it’s in the paper’.
*I was surprised to find out Koreans do not expect to get anything like 100% on the Korean equivalent of the TOEIC test; and they were surprised that I *would* expect to get near 100% on TOEIC. Am I wrong to think the average native speaker with a degree ought to get a near perfect score?
I don’t know the TOIC and TOEFL structure, but I know I previously glanced through some of the Cambridge First, Advanced and Proficiency material and certainly wouldn’t expect to do especially well in the higher ones of those. The average native english speaker certainly wouldn’t get near to 100% if they did we would all have A grades in our english highschool exams when in fact the average in the UK is more like C/D.
Considering the English level of some of my Korean friends who had almost perfect TOEIC exams, I’ve deduced native speakers should be able to ace it. I don’t know about the TOEFL; I understand that it is more difficult.
I’ve taught TOEIC and TOEFL (as well as IELTS) in my home (English-speaking) country, and I would have to say that most native speakers of English who have graduated university, and have done a little preparation to become acquainted with the test format, should expect a very high grade – at least 80-90%, probably higher (as long as you read the questions carefully and answer quickly enough).
The TOEIC is just a listening and reading test based on service and business situations – it’s not very difficult. Once familiar with the format, and after memorizing some key vocabulary, most students can get a decent score.
The many Koreans that I’ve met and/or taught take a lot of TOEIC classes, and practice tests, and take the actual test repeatedly (several times a year). With the amount of practice some test-takers have, their chances of scoring over 90% are actually fairly high – eventually.
But, I’ve met Koreans who’ve got next to perfect TOEIC scores that I would place in high elementary or low intermediate level conversation/speaking classes. The test has nothing to do with ability to speak.
TOEFL is more academic (as it is aimed at students wishing to enter English-speaking universities) and includes writing. The writing is quite easy, and I can teach any intermediate to high intermediate level student to get a passing grade in anything from one to several months. The reading is more difficult and requires a much larger and more academic vocabulary.
The writing standard on the TOEFL is not that high – IELTS is tougher. Most native speakers of English would probably consider it (TOEFL writing) high school level stuff – with topics like this (from memory): “Which is better: working for one company for your whole career, or working for many different comanies? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both and which you prefer. Support your opinion with reasons and examples.”
Again, any native speaker of English who has graduated university (even those who often confuse their and they’re) would probably get a very high score after minimal preparation.
By the way, Silver Surfer, nice statistics: ‘over half the teachers here…’ ‘Koreans say…’ where did you pull those from?
