Chosun Ilbo intern reporter Choi Hui-seon (see here and here) makes it three in a row with yet another piece ripping English teachers, this one citing the blog of some Canadian git who was selling forged documents and making fun of Korea and Koreans.
The piece is now on the front page of Naver.com. Congrats, Ms. Choi.
The funny thing is, I found the blog in question — no, I won’t link it, but it’s easy enough to locate — and took a look at its Sitemeter.
It was getting an average of two hits per day.

My heartfelt congratulations to Choi Hui-seon!! Not too shabby for a mere intern. While I’m at it, equally heartfelt congratulations to Michael “The Metropolitician” Hurt as well. Admit it, if it weren’t for the likes of Choi Hui-seon he’d be out of business and would have to actually finish his Ph.D. dissertation instead of blabbing about how he’s going to in the future.
Perhaps the next time I’m in Seoul on business, the three of us can all get together for some soju to revel in each others good fortune.
Selling forged degrees and bragging about it online? That’s just plain dumb.
Some people do deserve the attention they are getting in the Korean press.
Apologies for my unrelated comment, but what’s a proud Yank to do tomorrow for the Fourth? Any festivities going on? A quick browse of the US Embassy’s site produces nothing.
Could just as easily be a troll site. Look at http://www.jews-did-911.com/ , if Fox news had done any investigation they would have discovered it was a GNAA troll site, but instead they reported it as though it were 100% serious. If the site has its own domain, I wonder if she even bothered to check to see who it was registered to.
KrZ,
It wouldn’t be the first time a Korean newspaper has been fooled. A letter from a “Ronald Jeremy” has been published the Korea Times, for example.
The guy brags he hasn’t been deported or arrested, so I’m starting to wonder if you aren’t right about it being a troll site.
Pretty sure that is a troll site. It was linked to at ESLCafe a while back
Come on everyone, we all know these are true. While the Korean media may get their resources skrewed – in the minds of all male foreign English teachers is exactly as they write – the native English teacher strolling for Korean women.
Why so naive?
Who’s face is that in the Youtube page (The Chosun Ilbo has the distorted picture of his face) ? The Youtubes removed the video, by the way.
And just case anyone has missed it, the 10 gamblers appear on newspaper.

This quote, from the ‘Canadian’s’ blog, might give us an idea of who created the website, (no link, as it seems like a good idea not to give these idiots more traffic then they’re already getting, but this is from a post dated Nov. 2007):
Citizens angry by the nakedly sexual talk and actions of those kinds of white foreign teachers are voluntarily trying to improve things. The 14,419-member strong Anti-English Spectrum (cafe.naver.com/englishpectrum.cafe) is actively organizing a “citizen’s movement to toss out illegal English teachers”, requesting police and prosecution action. Site manager Lee (ID 엠투) said, “this year, too, we are focused on the issue of low-quality, lecherous, unqualified foreign teachers.” (emphasis added)
Now, the issue is if the Korean government will go after them the way they go after poker games, or beef protesters. I’m not gonna hold my breath.
Also, if anyone does visit the website please take a minute to flag it (its on the bar at the top)… if you go through this website, its blatantly clear, not only that its fake, but that the (presumably Korean) author’s only intent is hate mongering.
Now, if this site only got about 2 hits a day… how did she find it? She doesn’t come across as very bright, really, so I’m curious what search string you’d need to find it in the first place (I’m talking about people who have never seen the site, or don’t know it’s there).
My impression of the site was that it’s a hoax by somebody who wants attention and perhaps wants to embarrass Koreans when they find that they’ve been duped into taking the site seriously.

Oh… while we’re on the topic of “low-quality, lecherous, unqualified foreign teachers”, who would like to make a bet our friend Lee Eungah is going to be making a pilgrimmage to Boryeong next weekend?
read the original choson article, and its pretty easy how to find it.
As a commenter said, this guy has been “featured” on Dave’s a few times. A thread about his youtube videos came up last month, though I don’t recall if his blog was reposted there again. I suspect two possibilities:
1) The reporter monitors Dave’s ESL Cafe, saw a thread titled “worst teachers” (as the recent thread was), and clicked around until s/he found the blog; or
2) Somebody at Anti-English Spectrum either found or was forwarded the blog, who then passed it on to the reporter.
or 3) someone at Anti-English Spectrum created the blog, and then passed it along.
I would assume she monitors Dave’s, since she mentions it in her article. Otherwise, I fail to see how she (or Anti-ES) would otherwise find the thing. I mean what would the search string be? “Korean women are easy”? “I love to fuck Korean women”? or what? Then hoping you get a hit somewhere?
The quotes she uses, that she says are from Dave’s, seem a little wonky, though.
englishmonkey…
It’s obvious the entry you are referring to was meant to be sarcastic.
Which makes we wonder…It’s your blog, isn’t it?
Others…
The site is a hoax.
It’s not my blog. And of course I see it’s sarcastic. But yeah, something about the blog does scream hoax, and quite a malicious one, designed to stir up xenophobia and hate. I just hope the creators of this site are found, and brought to justice.
Perhaps a minor issue, but this intern is describing visa condition violators as “불법 체류 외국인들”. Obviously the foreigners involved are in Korea legally, so “불법 체류 외국인들” does not apply. Note to intern – doing illegal stuff in Korea does not make one a 불법 체류자.
dumb Canadian, he’s the reason behind that Anti-foreign English teacher campaign.
This reporter and the anti-English Spectrum club are nerds with far too much time on their hands.
How can I get in contact with the woman who wrote these articles?
She’s on ublove, just send her an IM
Yeah, and when you send her an IM, be sure to send her a link to the Onion. Much more accurate. I’m sure she can find something more interesting to report on there.
)
And just what is your idea of justice in a case like this?

@ #4/KrZ
But the videos linked to on the site seem real. And the videos link back to the site.
The way I see it, the guy in the videos is not in Korea anymore. In one, he mentions, more than once, that he likes to hang around Itaewon. He even mentions which night and which areas. He’s probably back in Canada, laughing about how people are prowling around Itaewon, looking for him.
In another, he reveals himself to be a total f**king ass**le. It’s footage of him teaching, and he’s mocking and ridiculing his students mercilessly, but they don’t know because their English is not fluent.
As much as I’d love the Korean police to break off a piece of his ass, I’m pretty sure that he’s laughing at everyone in Korea, both Korean and expatriate, from abroad.
AD,
He even mentions earlier in the blog that he was leaving Korea.
The Goat:
Whatever the law calls for. Whether the blog is real or fake, either way some laws have been broken, and the people responsible for that should face the consequences. What else could you think I mean by justice?
I know he’s reading this, so I’m challenging him:
Take a picture of yourself holding up the front page of today or tomorrow’s edition of the Chosun Ilbo and post it on your blog.
I double dare you.
I double dog dare you.
Koreansentry, this kind of idiot is NOT the reason behind the Anti-foreign English teacher campaign. Anti-English Spectrum pretty much started it all because some Korean women and some English teachers got drunk at a bar and had a wet t-shirt contest. Oh no, the horror!
Weren’t the women harassed by “concerned netizens”?
I saw this report on TV. A shaky camera entered the room, focusing on the craps table and blurring out the faces of the people who were most likely Korean nationals to make it appear as if a bust were being shown.
In the next shot, wads of money suddenly appeared on the table with no explanation of how it happened to be placed there between shots as the announcer made claims of huge amounts of money having been confiscated ( a likely story).
Finally a knife with burn marks was show as evidence of a drug ring.
Sad.
You here and there rant about every bad reports on English teahcers. Every Korean news company knows this and every Korean news company produces bad reports on English teachers. Clicking occurs enormously and thus makes heavy traffic to the company’s site. Both Koreans and English teachers make fiery comments, and much more traffic. Reporters also go to the fame and become celebrities.
Money and and fame comes into their pockets and they giggle when you all rant out here. Do not give links to the Korean news sites.
Ms. Choi wrote, 미국에서 유학 중인 인턴기자가 지난해 방학 때 한국에 와서 입양단체와 한인 입양아들의 가족 상봉을 돕는 봉사활동을 할 때의 일이었다. Her sentence construction is clumsy, so I cannot induce coerrect data from the above writing of hers. But, anyway, she was studying in America in 2008.
You know, all reporters have their blogs. They are given by the company whether they are dormant or not. Ms. Choi’s blog is http://blog.chosun.com/heesun9066
And, now, you know her Cyworld homepage and e-mail address.
✿⊹⊱⋛☃⋚⊰⊹✿,
Excellent point and advice.
Controversy sells.
They don’t deserve the attention we are giving them.
First of all there would be a drastic difference in justice depending on whether the actions indicated in the blog were true or just an attempt at trolling a country. If real, then I could agree with you.
If they are fake, I would like to know what law or laws were broken. Even more interesting I would like to know what you think is suitable justice for hurting Korean feelings.
That’s what I mean. Not some random call for non-specific “justice”.
The most important thing to there being “justice” is that the creator is publicly identified. (and linked to Anti-English Spectrum, if that’s the case) Regardless of whether or not any laws were broken.
That makes no sense at all.
The “Korean news-wheel” has been stuck on the “Evil English Teacher” peg for quite some while now!
Somebody out there must be salivating for a “Dok-Do” or “Evil-USFK” rant.
