I will love to see WonderGirls making a big hit in America.
“Nobody, nobody but Jew” have a good rhythm. Not like Ghetto Rap music that has taken over America. When did we get so Ghetto? Deal drugs for living and shoot hommie for cheating on me with my girl friend?
Listen to “Nobody but Jew”. It will make your day.
Baduk, I’ve missed you.
Here’s the link to the Seattle Times article.
Well, they got an “inside” type thing on the front page.
이 신문은 원더걸스를 ‘한국의 팝 센세이션(South Korea’s pop sensation)’, ‘한국의 소녀그룹은 놀라움(South Korean girl group is a wonder)’ 등으로 표현했으며, 히트곡 텔미(Tell me)의 간단한 안무가 전세계적으로 따라하기 열풍을 불러일으켜 ‘텔미 바이러스’로 불리기도 한다는 내용도 소개했다.
Anyone know where they got this from? It doesn’t seem to be in the ST article
Hbd,
Wait for claims that the audience of preteen girls supposedly preferred the Wonder Girls’ performance over that of the Jonas Brothers…possibly based on statements made by the lone middle-aged Korean who was there accompanying his or her daughter and her friends.
Kinda reminds of how the Korean media like to give the impression that Park Ji-sung (or Ji-sung Park) is a household name in the UK.
They’re the opening act?! This is a grave insult to Korea, indeed. The Jonas Brothers ought to be the opener.
I’d been led to believe Rain – and thus all K-pop – had already conquered the world.
There’s something terribly off about these Korean productions.
When Rain first came out in America, or when he was trying to stage something here, he was dressed up like some sort of clown, like an 1:17 scale action figure on a shelf at a toy store, rather than as a R&B singer, a naturalistic thug embodying street and soul. The latter aesthetic works so much more than the shit they put on him when he came out.
Fast forward a few years and WG come out as openers for JB. And what the fuck are they wearing? Their clonish outifts makes them seem a like bad mixture of something… a bit more like those Japanese twins singing in the Godzilla films than any Black American bebop group from the past.
WG have their greatest appeal when they are wearing regular teenager girl clothes. With their outfits, make up, and hair synchronized, however, they’re just pushing themselves off into the margin of normal… Indeed, they’re making themselves rather Asian in some stereotypical, American sense.
Whatever ploy is at play, it just ain’t working. It didn’t work for Rain, it’s not going to work for WG. JYP or whoever’s involved in marketing can go fuck themselves for being so damned stupid. Americans don’t need exotic. Believe it or not, they seek variations of the already familiar and desire conformity.
I think ultimately Korean singers should stay in Korea (and Asia). To believe there’s some neccesity to cross over and make it big in America– to be so consumed and brainwashed in Hanryu, which JYP is — is what makes these marketing misses so tragic.
Baduk, are you proposing that these girls are in fact JAPs*?
*Jewish American Princess
abcdeg might be on to something.
Just look at the ugly silver baseball cap:

I don’t know which came out first, but it’s as if she’s hiding under a hood for the first half of this version, so they obviously weren’t too concerned about the viewers seeing her face (one would think that they’d want their target audience to see the artist’s face since she’s attractive and relatively unknown in the US):

abcdefg,
Wondergirls are simply repackaging their hit songs from korea, which makes a lot more sense to me as a business gamble. After all, a modicum of success in the US may have spillover effect into other markets that can’t be underestimated. The likes of BoA on the other hand…making new stuff from scratch and doing it not so well, seems to cross over into being stupid.
abcdefg is absolutely right about the lame marketing, and it extends beyond local pop stars to billion of US $ investment in infrastructure. Check out this web promo for the mega-project that will presumably power Korea’s future knowledge economy in the 21C: http://english.incheonfair.org/
Can an Engrish teacher tell me what “lightening the future” means and if or why it doesn’t work grammatically? Next they’ll start using a capital N in the logo to represent “knowledge” . As long as Korean companies insist on doing their marketing to foreigners without consulting or listening to foreigners, it will remain off-target. And not listening seems to be a theme whether the language spoken is Korean or not.
who cares~!
vince – I think the video is half decent. The only distressing part was that they had the western guy pronouncing 인천 incorrectly. That really sucks donkey balls.
Koreansentry – I care. A lot. It’s absolutely fascinating to see these korean pop stars trying to pull off what seems to be almost impossible. It’s kind of like the giddy feeling of wonderment I had when Michelle Wie was trying to make the cut against PGA pros.
Fame is fleeting and one man’s poison is another man’s pleasure, to each his/her own, may hay when the sun shines, and all that jazz I guess, but I really don’t see what the promoters’ concept is here….are they thinking, ex-pat/Asians-abroad market , yellow fever, exotic entertainment or egad, pedophilia????? What market niche do they expect to tap with the wonder girls ?
Sure Britney is getting old(er) and wanders in and out of reality ever so often, Christina has used up her “dirty girl” image, ( though she is still is smoking hot
and there seems to be a left-wing position open in the “sweet/not-so-sweet-teenie-bopper-music-idol” world but really, even if one has little affection for Britney or Christina’s musical styles, it would be hard to argue that their singing and dancing skills exist(ed), at least relative to the Wonder Girls’.
Why feed the Wonder Girls to the wolves, since it would be unlikely a dismal failure overseas would do much good for their image at home? Oh yeah, because their managers are trying to wring every last Won out of their little underfed -soon-to-be -post-pubescent bodies before they are yesterday’s news.
And hey, I have nothing against a lady turning over a buck…. it’s the pimps I can’t tolerate.
“lightening the future”
Does english media bullshit make any more sense – “this years black is brown” for example…..
Will there be an accidental display of vagina?
It does wonders for the untalented.
“Today will be hot and lightening the future. That’s it for the weather. Now for local sports…”
