First!

I hope his chimp Bubbles is doing OK. The last time Michael was rushed to the hospital that poor chimp hit the bottle really hard and wouldn’t talk to anyone for weeks.

But I think the real news item should be Farrah Fawcett is dead. RIP Farrah.

3 KrZ June 26, 2009 at 10:48 am

I liked that song he did, “When Doves Cry”

4 seouldout June 26, 2009 at 10:49 am

It was a greater tragedy for Asia when Karen Carpenter died.

And RIP Farrah. My first boners were for you.

5 Mizar5 June 26, 2009 at 10:55 am

First Iran, now this. Why is everybody trying to steal KJI’s thunder?

Seriously, RIP, whatever that means. He transformed the music industry.

Suddenly the impact of Jackon’s death on Korea is realized.

Since the King of Pop was his only customer what’s Andre Kim to do?

And who’s going to express intent to buy Jeju the next time Korea goes bankrupt?

7 Richardson June 26, 2009 at 10:57 am

Farah is the real loss.

8 Above Criticism June 26, 2009 at 10:59 am

Michael Jackson, Farah Fawcett AND (for any Brits who read the NME in the ’80s or The Guardian’s music pages more recently) Steven Wells. Truly, it is the end of days.

9 seouldout June 26, 2009 at 11:03 am

AND Steven Wells?! Bollocks!

AND Ed McMahon.

Everyone to their bunkers.

10 SomeguyinKorea June 26, 2009 at 11:20 am

It’s a shame that Farah’s death is getting very little coverage. She deserves more than a mention at the bottom of the screen or in the margin.

11 Etekwini June 26, 2009 at 11:23 am

That’s one less paedophile to harm our kids.

12 Granfalloon June 26, 2009 at 11:25 am

Looking him up on Wikipedia, I have learned that the other Michael Jackson, beer expert, is also dead. For like two years now. And I didn’t know. The bad news just keeps coming.

13 Sonagi June 26, 2009 at 11:26 am

Lost interest in Michael and his music after Thriller. Always a fan of Farrah since I and half my female classmates sported her trademark feathered flip back in middle school. The other half were still wearing outdated Dorothy Hamel wedges. Either cut was an improvement on the early 70s shag, a horror I relive once in awhile when I happen to come across my third grade portrait.

R.I.P., Michael Jackson, the unmistakable, unforgettable voice of the The Jackson 5. Thank you, bro, for your contribution to the soundtrack of my youth.

15 SomeguyinKorea June 26, 2009 at 11:32 am

The first thing that came to mind when I heard that Michael Jackson died was his children. I hope they are allowed to lead a normal life.

Huh, I did not know that (he apparently died 2 years ago). I met and drank with that Michael Jackson years ago, when I was working at a small brewpub. Turning beer and whiskey drinking into a career… talk about living the dream.

“It’s a shame that Farah’s death is getting very little coverage.”

Turn on your television. Both NBC and ABC (the major networks in the states) are currently airing specials regarding the life and times of the originator of the famous ‘do and poster, while CBS is devoting theirs to the king of pop. Hell, I’m here in South Korea and I can watch them right now.

Not just the girls, Sonagi. ALL the headbangers (I think they call them ‘skids’ now) in my neighborhood had feathered hair, males included. Funny you mention it though, cuz it never occurred to me that maybe all those glam metal bands copied Farrah’s hair (and then I copied them…)

19 Mr. Myxlplyx June 26, 2009 at 11:41 am

I do think Off the Wall was one of the best pop albums ever. Never liked anything after that very much, though.

For those interested, ABC’s and NBC’s king of pop retrospectives will air tomorrow night during their weekly news programs, “20/20” and “Dateline,” as it seems that his death caught them napping, while they’ve had a couple of years to work on Farah’s.

For those who can’t watch live, 20/20 puts up the segments on its website shortly after they air here” http://abcnews.go.com/2020/ Many of Farrah’s are already up.

That happened in the 80s, absolutely the worst decade ever for hair and fashion. I wonder if the trendy pretty boy look in Korea draws its inspiration from North American and European 80s TV stars and musicians.

Stateside some designers have resurrected high-waisted pants with narrow legs. Poor Jessica Simpson took the fashion bait and wore jeans and a wide belt that magnified about ten pounds of weight gain, inspiring comparisons with Miss Piggy.

RIP Michael Jackson….Well, Phil Collins is still kicking

Who could not enough of Thriller in the 80s? Practically grew up on it.

25 SomeguyinKorea June 26, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Linkd,

This one is dedicated to you (watch at your own risk).

So long MJ, and thanks for all the great songs.

27 Robert Koehler June 26, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Hey, Phil Collins ain’t so bad.

28 Adams-awry June 26, 2009 at 2:15 pm

No Michael Jackson jokes yet? Strange…

29 SomeguyinKorea June 26, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Adams,

I’ll wait until tomorrow. Something about him not being dead, just getting in character for a remake of Thriller (the video).

Whoops….

30 Adams-awry June 26, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Best I’ve heard so far:

Not surprised about Jacko really… he was looking a bit pale.

31 Railwaycharm June 26, 2009 at 5:27 pm

The world is a better place now that that pillow-biter is gone. Did you hear he renamed his train at Neverland? The Kiddy, Kiddy Bang, Bang. Burn in hell pedophile!

32 dokdoforever June 26, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Here’s a link to when Jarvis Cocker invaded the stage at the Michael Jackson’s 1996 BRIT Awards performance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upbbz_Eyq4Q

Cocker objected to Jackson performing surrounded by children and a rabbi, while making ‘Christ-like’ poses and performing his then-recent hit, “Earth Song”.

This was after Jackson had settled the first child sex harassment suit.

33 Linkd June 26, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Al Sharpton: “Michael Jackson was an historic figure.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger: “He was an influential and iconic figure.”
Dionne Warwick: “We have lost an icon.”
Liza Minnelli: “He was one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived.”
Jane Fonda: “I am stunned. My friend Michael Jackson is dead.”
Steven Spielberg: “There will never be anyone comparable.”
Railway: “Burn in hell, pedophile!”

I’m trying to stay positive about MJ, at least for a day or two. He’s prettymuch been a living punchline in the USA for past fifteen years, which is a shame because his significance in the evolution of twentieth century music cannot be overstated.

One thing I can say without reserve: he is the perfect example of an era in which performers never gave less than 100%. I was in absolute shock a month ago when, at my uni’s festival, Son Dam Bi lip-synched three songs, did some lazy dancing, and called it a night. Was onstage for about ten minutes. Speaking as a former pro musician, I would be ashamed to deliver a performance like that. Michael Jackson was a passionate performer who always made every effort to see that his fans got their money’s worth. I fear that musicians like him are becoming a rare breed.

35 dokdoforever June 26, 2009 at 9:42 pm

I’ll take a lazy performer over one that sleeps with kids any day. Sure he had great talent, but also loads of personal problems, which he dealt with through denial. And as for claims that he overcame racial barriers – he used plastic surgery to erase all African – American traits from his face – hardly paying respect to one’s heritage.

36 Adams-awry June 26, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Michael Jackson is the only reason 20th century music exists. Oops! Did I just overstate his significance in the evolution of twentieth century music? And they said it couldn’t be done…

37 killian92 June 26, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Does anyone else think it’s ironic the one clip played over and over again on the news of Michael Jackson’s death is the scene from Thriller?

Think about it, it’s a walking dead (zombie) version of MJ dancing around scaring the crap out of a young lady.

Side Bar: Hmmm, scaring the crap out of a young lady? Well, they almost got it right…

38 tbonetylr June 27, 2009 at 5:15 am

DRUGS, It’s all about the DRUGS. Demerol that it, just a shot per day. The doctor is going DOWN!!!
Come listen to a story about someone named Michael,
A poor boy, barely had a childhood,
Then one day he was singin’ bout a rat,
And up from the ground came a freak of nature.
Pedo that is, black turn white, the Indiana way.

39 WangKon936 June 27, 2009 at 10:03 am

Interesting Gawker article (with picture) of how MJ would have looked if he did not have ANY plastic surgery…

A cross between Usher and Billy Dee Williams?

This just in… the King of Pop died of food poisoning. The autopsy reveled that Jackson had 12 year old nuts in his mouth. Enjoy breakfast with Hitler pedophile!

Wow now that’s just plain funny. Are you mad because he didn’t pay you any attention.

Why do people act as if celebrities don’t have personal problems, either people are stupid or just too damn naive and so what he had personal problems, you never had any damn you must be GOD. Also if you are in Korea I think you should be the last person talking about erasing features LOL

43 dokdoforever June 28, 2009 at 2:56 am

Personal problems that don’t harm other people …… like obsessions with plastic surgery that lead one to whittle your nose down to a nub amd carving a groove into your chin …. no problem with that. But attracting kids to his amusement park and then hopping in to bed with them, and most likely plying them with alcohol and sexually abusing them. That’s plain dispicable.

One out of court settlement and a court case lead me to believe that he was doing something inappropriate. And he admitted sleeping with the kids, which shows total ignorance of personal boundaries. The fact that he thought it was fine shows someone capable of inappropriate behavior towards kids.

It maybe great music, to some, but how can you enjoy it if it was written by a pedophile? Either you believe he’s truly innocent, which I can’t, or it’s just not important to you.

44 Railwaycharm June 28, 2009 at 7:51 pm

@ 41. I am happy that there is one less monster who can bring harm to innocent children. Yes, happy.

45 Mizar5 June 28, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Leave him alone you judgemental fellow. He’s dead. And as Deepack Chopra indicates, he was abused as a child exhibited psychological tendencies classically related to that, that, ie. plastic surgery indicative of a sense of shame, and pedophilia. Condemning people for psychological issues is a remnent of medieval times before it was a restaurant. It is clear that, like Elvis he struggled with childhood issues that he attempted to self-medicate away. It is important to remember that the man was a victim as well as an abuser, and that the more we attempt to lash out at such people, the longer the problems will continue to be swept under the rug unresolved.

If anything good were to come of this, it would not be pointing one’s finger at the doctor, or sneering at MJ, but rather disussing head-on the psychological issues that result from child abuse.

46 Railwaycharm June 28, 2009 at 9:32 pm

Look. There are a lot of people who have tough childhoods that don’t hurt children. Judgmental, you bet! MJ had the world on a string; he could have received help for his perversions. Instead, he bought his way out of his crimes. I find it very hard to have sympathy for this piece of shit. He hurt kids, bottom line! Smoke a turd in hell MJ.
