Korea Declares War on Doves

by robert neff on June 10, 2009

Long the symbol of peace, pigeons doves are now under attack by the Korean government for destroying cultural properties.  Imagine my changrine to discover that Seoul City Government may not be responsible for knocking down all the historical sites in the city – that the true culprits are the pigeons   doves.  That’s right, pigeons, I mean doves, have been declared harmful animals and will now be dealt with by the city government.

Preposterous. Didn’t the Korean government already declare war on doves at the 1988 Seoul Olympics Opening Ceremony? The doves were just retaliating, is all.

On a more serious note, there is no scientific distinctions between a pigeon and a dove… though I guess colloquially, doves have a very set image.

I only recently actually witnessed baby pigeons for the first time in my life-they were nesting in a packing box on my wife’s office balcony.

Long known as one of the more elusive juvenile species (somewhat up there with snow leopard cubs), baby pigeons do exist – watch out, folks, ’cause it’s the only time they’ll not be dropping the shite on you.

One of the true joys of my life is watching Korean girls dive out of the way if a pigeon even flaps its wings anywhere close to them.

I’m with ladron. You’d think touching a pigeon turned you into a zombie or something. High comedy — the taller the heels, the funnier the evasive actions.

I predict the prices for 닭고치 will rise in proportion to the implementation of this policy. … but seriously pigeon is good eating, a tasty, dense yet tender dark meat. It really has a great texture to it. I highly recomend it over a salad with balsamic vinaigrette.

What does “dealt with” mean? Gassing? Trapping? Poisoning?

I remember this junior college that has a lot of rabbits on campus. Pretty campus built in the 40′s I think so it didn’t look like a business park like a lot of other junior colleges.

Anyways, I remember stealing my sister’s bunny and letting it free on campus. I thought I done a good deed. I told my neighbor the story and then he said, “oh yeah, you know they trap and poison all the rabbits every month, don’t you?”

bumfromkorea and tmc1233 both beat me to it, but I’ll post the link anyway.

Olympic Doves burnt by the Olympic flame. Poor birds…
