I don’t know how useful some of these “rankings” that the OECD comes up with but the latest says that the French leads the developed world in hours slept at 8 hours and 50 minutes a day. The same study said that the French typically spend two and a half hours eating a day! Americans? Less, but they are fatter.
So, which OECD nation leads the world in least amount of sleep? Yep, you guessed it, Korea at 7 hours and 49 minutes. Korea edged second ranked Japan. Take that Japan!
Ah, but wait. Hold the cheering. What is Korea getting from all the lack of sleep? Per the OECD, Korea’s labor productivity was just average. Wow. That’s a lot of face time.

“We surveyed 100 people. Top four answers are on the board. ‘Which nationality sleeps most at work?’”
“Korea?”
“Show me…KOREAAAAA!”
*Bing*
“Number one answer!”
I think 7 hours and 49 minutes seems high for Korea. Anyways, why is France taking longer to eat than the U.S., but we’re fatter?
Well, wouldn’t that have to do with the fact that the brain takes 10 to 15 minutes to know that you are full? So slower eating might reduce the odds of overeating (it’s No. 21).

# 1,
I believe it it. Sleeping AT work is part of face time…
I think they must also be accounting for time spent sleeping on the bus/subway.
I also can’t believe it’s so high. It’s very rare that I get that much sleep, especially on a weekday, and I often find co-workers who leave work long after me arriving at school the next day before me, despite the fact that their commute is 30-45 minutes longer than mine. I’m not even sure how they could conduct an accurate survey like this.
People needs at least 8~9 hours sleep a day. Less than 8 hours? That will reduce your life span up to 10 years. Because of busy lifestyle and tight schedule, more and more people are loosing valuable relax/rest time. Government want us to die quickly so that they can save spending on pension.
This is probably one of the reasons why the suicide rate is so high here. Lack of sleep is sure to disrupt your psychological stability.
Here’s the survey, the methods used are detailed at the end. The Korean stats were part of the National Census in 2004 and include ages 10 and up (until death, I assume)… so let’s assume that children, housewives, and retirees, drag that number up.

There are some other interesting stats in there by the way… and of course, remember each country collects their own data in their own ways…
See now, there’s a lot to be said for Minitel… it’s a lot less distracting!
