Canada Replaces Korea on U.S. “Copycat” List

by WangKon936 on May 2, 2009

Per the WSJ, Canada has replaced South Korea on the priority watch list for countries “having problems” protecting U.S. intellectual property.

Per the article:

Canada’s debut on the priority watch list reflects growing U.S. unease with Canada’s failure to strengthen copyright laws and crack down on counterfeit and pirated products.

Rounding out the 12-nation watch list are Algeria, Argentina, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand and Venezuela. Wow, that’s some exclusive company. China I can understand, but Israel? Canada?

Hasn’t Canada also nearly matched Mexico on the United States’ drug list? Just because of Marijuana?

Both, I think, are examples of Big Brother trying to leverage Little Brother into passing draconian laws similar to its own, rather than representing any real threat.

Canada is already listed in the Axis of Assistant Evil for supposedly allowing the 9/11 terrorists to slip through.

Well, what better way to start the weekend than to make fun of the Canadians?

Israel doesn’t pay much attention to copyright. For all the admiration I have for them, their notion of sharing is basically “We need it, we take it (even if it means life in prison for a fellow Jew, hello Mr Pollard!), and we won’t pay for it. Now be nice, we’re the good guys in the region!”.

dda’s #3 captures the essence of the ROK rationalization too, except it leaves out the inevitable: “it’s inevitable”. I’m amazed the Uncle Sucker has seen fit to give Korea a pass this time around.

I’m amazed the Korean girl agreed to marry you, Sewer.

#1,

McCain must get his intelligence from Ann Coulter.

Does this mean that his claims that he knew where Bin Laden is were BS?

#5,

Not as much as I am at the fact you still claim to be Korean.

Observations of this being “examples of Big Brother (America) trying to leverage Little Brother (Canada) into passing draconian laws similar to its own, rather than representing any real threat.” is partially correct. The culprit is the entertainment industry in America who has tried to promote its interests through out more than a few countries by promoting laws that restrict internet usage and often circumnavigates the right to due process in a a court of law as well as basic consumer rights.

Now, it seems that the U.S. trade representative to Canada is lying (?) in accusing Canada of supporting software piracy.

Truly, some of the worst enemies we Americans face are special interest groups (food, agriculture, communications/entertainment) that are the result of various industries that have learned to pool their resources so as to unduly leverage their influence in government and society. Such activity often promotes conditions upon us that can be contrary to the needs or best interests of American society. Examples of such can be seen in how antibiotics have been given to cattle too often, leading to the creation super-germs that are impervious to medicines. Another example can be seen in how a “three complaints and your internet services is terminated” can occur, without any legal review or process. Such could/would lead to abuses without any legal recourse.

Entirely correct, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t ordinarily take issue with the US, but this incident reflects very badly on that country’s leadership.

#9,

Right. Greed has a lot to do with it. Instead of fining people thousands of dollars for downloading songs when the added exposure increases the sales of the real products (concert tickets and merchandising).

Just recently, the media was talking about how the leaking of the then yet to be released Wolverine movie online would serve to gauge the effects of piracy. The leaking of that movie probably created far more buzz for this movie than it should have had. Just wait until Monday. I predict it will have the biggest opening weekend of the year in the US, bigger than that of the original X-Men movie.

Correction, “Instead of fining people thousands of dollars for downloading songs, they should come out and admit that the added exposure…”

#6 Coz Korean girls love Whitey. Don’tcha know? Don’t be a Hater.

Obviously the folks making this list have never been to the Yongsan electronics market. They have more black-marketed intellectual property there than the entire country of Canada combined.

I download and stream a lot of Law and Order, and way down in the bottom right corner of the screen one can always find…the CTV logo.

It’s because all the Koreans have moved to Canada.(This is a 100 point MH comment, I give myself 100 points. Hell, maybe even 200 for being a Korean and making it.)

REally? I actually give Canada’s lax border control high ratings.

“Canada Replaces Korea on U.S. “Copycat” List”

This sentence gave me a bit of trouble, and it took me a bit to figure out why.

Generally, “replace” is used in the context of “switching something, with something else”, so I was naturally assuming Canada took Korea’s place on a list, which didn’t quite make sense.

Perhaps “re-placed” or something would work better.

18 MrMao May 3, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Yeah, deep. You are probably one of those Koreans who can read. Afraid of you.

19 Koreansentry May 5, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Canada is also one of these worse US copycat nation on earth.

20 SomeguyinKorea May 5, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Wolverine apparently made 87 million last weekend in the US, 73 million abroad, surpassing all expectations. Some people are complaining about that fact that it didn’t match Iron Man’s opening during the same weekend last year, but the economy was doing far better last year than it is doing now, and people weren’t worried about catching the flu.
