Cullen Thomas’ Hashish Journey on NatGeo

by WangKon936 on March 17, 2009

Don’t know how many people in Korea get the National Geographic channel, but it’s usually included in basic cable here in the states.  Remember Cullen Thomas?  The former English teacher who took a detour to the Philippines, mailed himself several kilos of bud, got caught and was sent to a Korean jail?  He gets his own Locked Up Abroad episode.

It’s too soon for a full youtube on the episode, but the official NatGeo page has video excerpts.

UPDATE: The full youtube does exist!  Part 1 of 7 here.

This was posted to Youtube in several chunks. Unfortunately, it’s almost entirely about the events leading up to his arrest and it spends very little time talking about how he spent his sentence.

I gotta hand it to this pothead. Not only did he live the high life loafing around as an English teacher, but he also has found ways to continuously capitalize on being an ex-con. I wish I could make so much from so little.

The series is also known as Banged Up Abroad, but that phrasal verb likely has a different meaning for Americans. The series is available on torrents and from file share sites, such as this one.

A familiar story. How many people are are in jail for this victimless crime?

Vote Ron Paul in 2012 :)

I’d like to take this opportunity to give a big shout out to San Fran Zac who introduced me to the pleasures of hash, little pills, and dildoes in a Seoul yogwan in 1995.

Sometimes that fifteen minutes of fame is just too long.

Some of you guys should read the book. His observations of Korea are a lot more interesting than his failed, clumsy exploits as an amateur drug trafficer.

You can probably get it used for 50 cents on Amazon.com now…

It’s a decent read.

Sorry, I won’t fork over even four bits to go toward his rehabilitation fund.

I did, however, check Brother One Ball’s tome out from the public library today, so I’ll see what all the fuss is about.

Victimless crime? If you can look past the fact that drugs fund terrorism, you are more morally bankrupt then you project.

13 misuda March 18, 2009 at 10:33 am

Railwaycharm, are you implying Brother One Nut paid US taxes on his drug smuggling gains?
Drugs don’t blow up buildings, people do.

#12 – If you can look past the fact that drugs fund terrorism, you are more morally bankrupt then you project.

My friend smoking the weed he grows at home for his own consumption is not funding terrorism. That sweeping generalization is as moronic as anything I’ve read here at the Hole. (And, that’s actually saying quite a bit.)

That guy owes for all the times Customs ripped open my parcels upon seeing a non-Korean name on it and did a piss poor job of taping it back up.

Just for fun, here’s the Donga Ilbo article about his arrest from June 1994:

Searches for other English teachers busted for drugs before him (as far back as 1990) turned up nothing. He may have been the first in a not-so-proud tradition…

I don’t get why so many people think they need to have it mailed to them/mail it to themselves.

Korea grows perfectly good weed – it’s something the nation can get behind.
