Foreign Execs Leaving Korea?

by Robert Koehler on March 13, 2009

Not sure if the story has much merit, but at least the graphic is cute.

Oh, the guy who does the editorial cartoons for the KT is still a cunt.

Thank goodness for a graphic that really gets to the heart of this issue:

“Won’t someone PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!”

2 hamel March 13, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Over the last few years I have found these cartoons so helpful to understanding the KTimes’ stories. I think it is great that the KTimes is outsourcing illustration jobs to sheltered workshops.

In this case, labeling the map “Korea” and showing the man with his bag packed and a big arrow pointing outward really aid comprehension for me.

But why is he taking only one son, leaving the other behind. Is he an illegitimate half-breed, perhaps fathered with a local girl? The boy ties does suggest one of those preppy, over-dressed Korean kids rather than an ‘expat child.”

On a serious note, either some of the companies are lying/dissembling, or the journalist here got their facts/translation wrong. I can name at least one person from one of those companies who is now back in his country because of cutbacks.

At least the cartoonist didn’t leave the second kid in a freezer…

4 Robert Koehler March 13, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Ouch. You’re going to Hell for that one.

5 hamel March 13, 2009 at 5:23 pm

He’d have to be French to do that, DDA. Like the second cartoonist in Thailand, with his sometimes horrific images…..

Heck, what *is* it with you gallic people?

6 rmeurant March 13, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Who moderates the moderator? Is such coarse and offensive language really necessary?

I would assume you are talking about “cunt”. True, it is coarse and perhaps offensive to some thin skinned politically correct wannabes…but sometimes a cunt is a cunt and the editor is clearly one.

I don’t know, I’m half Spanish, half-Belgian.

the Aristocrats!

Unlike the old reason, getting fed up with the xenophobic unions and transferring to Taiwan or Singapore…

RK’s and The Goat’s use of the term with which I take issue simply reveals an inability to clearly articulate a socially acceptable and meaningful description (which is uncharacteristic of RK at least, who seldom seems lost for words). A moment’s reflection should confirm that a term of abuse that is demeaning and offensive to 50% of the world’s population is not appropriate for use in a public forum.

12 The Goat March 13, 2009 at 9:06 pm

A moment’s reflection should confirm that a term of abuse that is demeaning and offensive to 50% of the world’s population is not appropriate for use in a public forum.

Can you back up your statistic with a reference? Furthermore, would you take offense to calling a person a “dick”, “prick”, or “cock” or any other like term? If I said the editor (as well as the cartoonist) “was still a vagina”, would that be acceptable?

Marmot, perhaps you should change the original post to “is still a naughty foo foo” (at risk of offending an arbitrary percentage of foo foos).

13 Ladron March 13, 2009 at 9:58 pm

I think he meant women.

14 The Goat March 13, 2009 at 11:07 pm

I think he meant women.

Thanks?

Where’s the blonde dude’s mouth?

16 soondae March 14, 2009 at 12:40 am

The monitor could have used the word ‘twat’.

17 Sonagi March 14, 2009 at 5:01 am

Furthermore, would you take offense to calling a person a “dick”, “prick”, or “cock” or any other like term?

As a woman, I think it’s sexist that the terms “dick,” “prick,” and “cock” get more airplay than the underutilized “cunt.”

There’s a joke about what women would do if they suddenly had a penis. One woman responded she’d walk into her boss’s office, whip it out to show it to the boss, and demand: “OK, now where’s my raise?”

#8,

Dude, many Belgians are Gallic. Never heard of Walloons?

20 Gillian March 14, 2009 at 9:31 am

I’m with Sonagi on this one. I think it is only fair that female genitalia get as much air time as male genitalia.

On the other hand, “Cunt” makes up for less air time than “Prick” “Cock” “Dick” etc, in that a “Cunt” is a truly miserable excuse for humanity, the others are just miserable.

21 Gillian March 14, 2009 at 9:34 am

Just out of curiousity, wonder if the KT would have printed a similar cartoon (as the one depicting school violence in Germany) if it had reflected the Virginia Tech killings…. just a thought…..

22 Arghaeri March 14, 2009 at 1:12 pm

“I think he meant women.”

Still crap on the 50% statistical front. We clearly have at least one woman who doesn’t give a dildo, thanks Sonagi, and since english is still a minority language how many of that 50% would even understand the term. Not to mention the fact that the term is rarely used to offend women, the normal target for such a word being men.

23 Arghaeri March 14, 2009 at 1:21 pm

“Dude, many Belgians are Gallic. Never heard of Walloons?”

Walloons are Walloons not french, and the language is Walloon not french although its from the same family.

24 dda March 14, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Thanks Arghaeri. Saved me some typing. Dude.

25 Darth Babaganoosh March 14, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Maybe in YOUR country. Not all countries use the term the same way, nor is it considered so egregiously offensive in said other countries.

26 Arghaeri March 14, 2009 at 3:43 pm

No country has 50% of the world’s population.

27 Brendon Carr (Korea Law Blog) March 14, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Back to the topic at hand: The economic crisis is making Korea even more of an out-of-the-way backwater than it was before. I’m terrified to think of the restaurants we’re going to lose out of this.

I can’t go back to the days of “hambag steakuh”.

28 MrMao March 14, 2009 at 4:04 pm

out-of-the-way backwater

Won’t catch me teaching them for 60 cent dollars no more. It was tolerable when the money was good, but once that fell off a cliff it just wasn’t worth living in a slum anymore.

Living in a slum?… Where do you live? Are you sure you’re in Korea?? Did you double check the airplane tickets?

30 Sonagi March 14, 2009 at 9:20 pm

We clearly have at least one woman who doesn’t give a dildo, thanks Sonagi,

I think Gillian has a cunt, too, so that makes two women who don’t give a dildo.

31 Darth Babaganoosh March 14, 2009 at 10:11 pm

No country has 50% of the world’s population.

Do you truly not understand my comment? There’s no shame in asking for help.

32 Gillian March 15, 2009 at 5:30 am

Indeed Sonagi, I come equipped with all the requisite female genitalia.

33 colontos March 15, 2009 at 5:49 am

pics or it’s not true

34 aaronm March 15, 2009 at 12:15 pm

#6, stop being such a precious cunt. Anyhow, I agree with that cunt of a lawyer, Mr. Carr that these comments should get back on cunting topic. Now hop to it, you cunts.

35 MrMao March 15, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Living in a slum?… Where do you live? Are you sure you’re in Korea?? Did you double check the airplane tickets?

If you can’t see that Seoul is one big slum, you gotta get out of Korea.

36 Arghaeri March 16, 2009 at 7:46 pm

“Do you truly not understand my comment? There’s no shame in asking for help.”

Do you truly have no sense of humour. No shame in taking some medication!! ;-)

37 Arghaeri March 16, 2009 at 7:50 pm

“I think Gillian has a cunt, too, so that makes two women who don’t give a dildo.”

LOL ;-)

38 Arghaeri March 16, 2009 at 7:51 pm

“If you can’t see that Seoul is one big slum, you gotta get out of Korea.”

How about Detroit??

39 jjmountain March 16, 2009 at 10:24 pm

“If you can’t see that Seoul is one big slum, you gotta get out of Korea.”

I know Seoul has it’s fair share of scummy streets and golmoks, and if you’re stuck in the middle of some of them it can seem like the whole of Seoul is like you say, a slum. It can also seem like that as a lot of Seoul seems to have been built with the kind of thought process of a 3 year-old in the way it connects together.

To say it’s all a slum is going a little far though no? What about Gangnam (if you’re loaded) or Insadong? Ok I don’t know Seoul well as I’m a Daejeonite but I can’t imagine all of Seoul is THAT bad.

40 JW March 16, 2009 at 10:39 pm

I think Arghaeri is a woman too. She has expressed the view to me that it is actually possible to get laid “for free”. Only a woman would say such a thing.

41 JW March 16, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Oh and despite my belief that it is virtually impossible for men to get laid for free, I am completely susceptible to having my views changed, so any ladies out there, if you’re visiting NYC any time soon….

42 The Goat March 16, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Hehe…thank you for that. Had a shitty night and that made me laugh.

Welcome. I thought the deadpan delivery was rather exquisite if I say so myself.
