Oh, the Fuss Korean Girl Groups Can Cause

by Robert Koehler on March 7, 2009

A recent introduction of the Korean girl group SNSD at the Complex Blog got the attention of Korea’s Asia Today, which was not entirely impressed.

Complex Blog came back with an introduction of the Wonder Girls that’s sure to piss off somebody.

Are they going to do better than Korea’s last attempt at a Morning Musume-sized girl group? As I recall, except for one song, i-13 (Korea’s 13-girl group) was never heard from again.

I wonder how many people get the “fembot” reference from the 70s TV show “The Bionic Woman”. Unfortunately I remember the 2-part episode… with relish.

Nice to see Asia Today bringing us the hard news. I skimmed the comments at the site and found this gem:

You said “Shake a tree in Apgujeong and 10 SooYoungs will fall out”
Please give me… no no no… just show that tree…
If truly exist that tree, I would root up and shake it roughly.
And I talk to one of that girls.
“Will you be my girl friend?” ㅠㅠ

An unintentional poet.

Wonder Girl Su-Hee,
D.O.B.: 6/27/92
WHY SHE’S HOT: The maknae (youngest) of the group is probably its most popular. She’s the only WG to star in a film, and is known for her cute facial expressions.
WHY SHE’S NOT: As always, “most popular” means “most hated”: She’s derided for having a mandoo (dumpling) face and being the weakest singer. Also, this was a pretty bad idea.

The “this” was doing the Beyonce dance (“Put a Ring On It”). So Koreans don’t like Su-Hee because she’s too cute and tried to do the Beyonce dance? WTF, is the dance too dirty/sexual or what? The only reason I can figure out why they think it was a “bad idea” is because she can’t freakin’ dance. Heck, the girl below is better than Su-Hee…

Nevermind can’t dance. So-hee can’t sing, either. Any time they’ve done a live show, So-hee’s vocals are cringe-inducing. But hey, she’s cute, so all is forgiven.

She’s derided for having a mandoo (dumpling) face and being the weakest singer.

They got that wrong. They call her mandu as a 애칭. It’s supposed to be a cute nickname and not deriding.

It’s a bad idea because most ajeosshi fans like her because she’s cute and innocent looking. Sort of like watching a cute niece performing at a school play. (At least that’s how I see her) If they wanted sex appeal they could pay attention other singers who have a more feminine physique, unlike So-hee’s 초딩 features. She needs to grow up first.

2/newspaperman, the writer may or may not be as old as you… Anyone familiar with Austin Powers would get the “constructed” reference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fembot
