maybe a reprint of the comment is in order?
If this fellow is truly on the level and has never justly been convicted of anything, then CBS should be sued for libel. This professor should start up a legal fund now and ask for contributions; if CBS is guilty of libel, every foreigner that has ever taken offense at the salacious gossip and libel that has been heaped upon foreigners in Korea should help load this cannon.
P.S. to the professor — to paraphrase Ben Franklin, “the appearance of wrong-doing is often as bad as having done the deed itself.”
Mr. Elgin,
The Guy did not deny he was convicted; in fact, he wrote the following:
The Guy also wrote:
Even The Guy’s own explanation of what happened shows that his actions with the girls were inappropriate behavior. It may not have been what people were imagining, but it was still inappropriate.
R.Elgin: no offense, but, where the hell do you think you are? A foreigner sue a Korean broadcaster for libel? Get a grip, man.
I sympathize with your sentiment. If the guy is on the level, it’s galling and I feel for him. But seriously, given where we are, you have to assume that justice will not be served. Not to mention the fact that, assuming he is on the level, the American system didn’t do much better for him either. Life sucks that way sometimes.
Is there any info on the IP address of the alleged commenter?

“Is there any info on the IP address of the alleged commenter?”
Going hunting?
If it is a Daejeon IP then I lend more credibility to the poster than if it is being posted form Minot N. Dakota.
If “The Guy” is legit. He sure sounds creepy to me. Girls surrounded his desk and asked him to touch their legs for a dollar? Oh sure they “asked” him.
“They wanted me to touch “THERE” legs……”
Not only does he sound like a perv but, his English sucks.
Most foreigners here seem quick to defend the guy wanting to believe every word, but backing it up with “if he is on level” just in case. I’m amazed how so many of you portray Korean girls as “me love you long time” sex deprived and suppressed whores ready to burst with just about any American. Gosh, give me break!

Gosh, give us the evidence upon which this stupid comment is based.
That explanation is such BS. It is not my fault, the teenage girls forced me to touch them and pay them money. Even if the explanation was 100% true, and I don’t buy it for a second, it is still inappropriate behavior and it shows someone who has poor judgemnet who shouldn’t be around young girls.
Gosh, give us the evidence upon which this stupid comment is based.
Allow me to knock-off your huge blinders. Evidence is amply evident in the words of The Guy himself
First of all, I was not offering the girls money, they where harassing me for money and came up and surrounded me at my desk. They wanted me to touch there legs in exchange for a dollar, but I refused. One then picked up my hand and placed it on her knee and I just gave her a single pat; she then harassed me for a dollar until I gave it to her. Another girl wanted me to touch her stomach, but I absolutely refused. These girls went out bragging about what went on, so later a friend of theirs came into my room and nagged me for a dollar for almost the entire period, constantly sticking our her hand. I finally held out a dollar, but shook her outstretched hand while giving it to her, so I momentarily touched her hand. Another girl asked if I ever had sex in water; I simply replied (trying to be funny) “I don’t have sex because my mommy would spank me.”
Read more carefully, before making stupid comments yourself: There is no support for Big Jung’s assertions in that Guy’s remark. None.
Even with your mediocre mind, Netizen Kim, you could perform a lot better without the attitude, with all due respect.
“If “The Guy” is legit.”
I’m starting to think it’s a creepy hoax.
The Guy might be getting railroaded, but he himself relates his own inappropriate behavior, so if he wasn’t asking for such an ambiguous situation to appear (and who would, really?), he should have been professional enough to walk away.
I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but if he’s who he says he is, he really should have known better. Assuming that he didn’t get his degree from a mill, his experiences before getting here should have edumicated him some, but some folks just don’t learn that fire burns.
Yup, I don’t know a lot about the situation, other than what I’ve read here, but as a professional, he should have made himself above suspicion. Yes, it’s a lofty aspiration and not an easy goal, and if young ladies with taut buttocks are pawing at me, I might have felt the urge to paw back, but I’d like to think that I would have avoided getting entangled in a sticky wicket (is that a mix of metaphors or a clash of similes?).
Obviously, the Guy made a mistake. I know that when confronted with a suprising circumstance, I am not always sure how to react to every situation. If people would use more instances to instruct people on how to conduct themselves, it might be more useful than trying to maximize the punishment. I would more say that his case looks more like entrapment because if the case involved minors he would be automatically investigated whether there was an actual victim or not. If you let fear or desire to punish take the forefront of your judgement, I hope that you are never in position to decide a case.
Let’s take corporal punishment in Korea. It is basically acceptable as long as you don’t get caught on a camera phone doing it. I know teachers now take the students into a locked room alone and do it. Does that make things any more right? Who knows what is happening now instead of it being in the open? They fire the teacher that did it and everyone learns to do it off camera. Everyone hates pedophiles and just want to get a kick on anyone suspected of anything. One guy I went to university with (in education to be a kindergarten teacher) said everyone always looked at him like he was a pedophile because he was the only man who wanted to teach kindergarten in his class.
The guy has gone 10 years in Korea without incident. I have only been here 5 years, and I have been close to being in situations that would cause problems. About a month ago, I was driving home and almost had a high school student jaywalk out into the street in front of my car. The student was talking on her cell phone and was looking the wrong way. I am a careful driver and saw that she wasn’t looking and sounded the horn. She looked up just in time to avert her impending suicide. I would probably be in a world of trouble if she had died from this. If I could have given her a dollar to go away from the road and danger, I probably would have done it.
Twelve years wasn’t that long ago. Sexual awareness policies would have been well-established and teachers cautious. Remember McMartin Preschool anyone? Six years of trials, not a single conviction, yet the lives of both the accused and the child witnesses were damaged.
Guy himself acknowledges that he patted a girl on the knee. This was especially unwise if, indeed, the girl put his hand there. False accusations of sexual misconduct are not unknown, and even if the teacher is not found guilty, his or her contract may not be renewed because districts can’t afford to have on staff a teacher suspected of inapproprate contact with children. Male teachers and teachers of secondary school students are extremely careful about any physical contact.
If Guy’s account is accurate, then he behaved unprofessionally, fueling the teens’ immaturity by patting the knee, giving in to the girl’s demand for a dollar, and giving a sarcastic response to an inappropriate question. An adult who asks like a teenager has no business in a school setting.
sonagi, finally. someone gives a sane appraisal of the situation.
I say The Guy’s description should probably be taken with a salt-shaker full of salt. He’s had 12 years to work on that lie.
BigJung and Netizen Kim should keep in mind that the girls in The Guy’s story are America girls; his mishap happened in America and not Korea. That’s why he was giving out dollars and not chon wons. The story and one’s choice to believe it or not do not bear at all on one’s opinion of Korean girls.
I think you’ve been drinking too much of the Anti-EnglishSpectrum‘s Kool-Aid. Come down out of the bell tower before someone gets hurt.
I typed that post hurridly before setting off for a school function and need to correct a couple of typos:
sexual awareness – sexual harassment awareness
A adult who asks like a teenager – An adult who acts like a teenager
hurridly – hurriedly
Dang, this is embarrassing coming fro the Language Nazi. I think a little red wine will steady my clumsy fingers.
fro – from
Now I’ll go pour myself that glass of wine.
Am I the only one here who thinks The Guy is substituting “knee” for “ass” and “stomach” for “breasts”? The whole story seems pretty far-fetched and is almost certainly a hoax. What kind of a teacher caves in to a bunch of girls trying to coerce him into a game of “gropes-for-cash”? A classroom in the US isn’t exactly the same as a girlie bar in Manila.
Never mind, I think I just answered my own question.
… and that’s also why it was reported on a background check done by the FBI.
So don’t worry The Guy is only painting American high school girls in a bad light. Your own are still safe and pure enough for you to molest at your leisure.

Sick and insulting joke.
Totally inappropriate.
#25,
What’s your favorite poison? I’ve long been partial to a Châteauneuf-du-Pape…but the sheep that drink whatever Robert M. Parker recommends have driven the price up four-fold in the last 10 years.
“Most foreigners here seem quick to defend the guy wanting to believe every word, but backing it up with “if he is on level” just in case. Re: #10, Um, who exactly do you see doing this? You’re imaginary big-bad hairy waegook who has the audacity to try to have consensual sex with Korean women?
I, for one, want this guy out of here, based on his own ‘defence’.
Sorry – should be ‘Your’ not ‘You’re’.
before Guy spoke up, giving him the benefit of doubt was okay, but after his comment, anyone sensible person can see that what he did even as he explained it was over the line and very inappropriate. his age and experiences do not matter. nor do his excuses and rationalizations. there is something perverse or maybe just “off” in his thought process that made it plausible for him to touch any student at all in a hyper-conscious American classroom setting. being here and tactfully not having to get a real criminal background check is not just convenience or mere happenstance, it was a necessity for him to continue his life as he preferred it to be. he knew about his past and knew there was a possibility of someone finding out and just like the “weak public defender” rationale, he took no steps to alter or reshape his predicament. so now he finds himself again confronted with his poor choices and is telling himself that he is being wronged. these are not the actions of a cognizant person aware of dubious choices in the past, more like someone attempting to keep their demons in check by “only teaching at a university” and not around children, for which we have only his claim and no actual facts.
I think this is probably a hoax, and that TheGuy is not really the Professor in the story. If he is he’s an idiot, you don’t go around touching kids and giving them money! It’s a very stupid thing to do indeed.
I teach high school boys and girls, and it is obvious that you have to be very careful around your students. Their teenagers and obviously growing up, and this is all the more reason to be very careful around them to avoid giving the wrong impression. Physical contact of any kind with students has to be dealt with very carefully to avoid controversy.
The kids are always saying this like ‘oh, teacher I love you’ and ‘ooh, teacher you’re so handsome’, it just a part of them growing up. You have to keep a professional detachment with your students.
Keith (#34),
It sounds like you are teaching in Korea because Korean female students love to flirt with their teachers. Maybe, American girls do too, but I do not remember their doing it when I was going to junior high and high school many years ago.
Even though I am now fifty-three and balding, many of my female college students still flirt with me by saying the exact same things you mentioned in your post.
Actually, Keith, while it is, of course, difficult to know with 100% certainty that someone is who they say they are on the Internet, I strongly believe The Guy is, in fact, who he says he is. Why I think that, I can’t say.
#35, is it flirting or flattery? Butter up the teacher a bit, get a few easy marks, at least in my experience.
#18 – Sonagi, speaking as someone who originally taught in the public system in Canada, I think you are totally correct. This guy, from his own account, displayed an utter lack of professionalism and poor judgement. I’m sympathetic to teachers being put in difficult “real time” situations – and, they can and do happen on occasion – but his handling of the situation in question was awful.
colontos, I stand (sit) corrected. But I believe you got my point, whether or not you agree with it or not. I’m just waiting on Slim to make another comment.
Sorry, my last comment was very redundant. lol
#35 – GBevers. I’m certainly not teaching HS here because I ‘enjoy’ some of the kids flirting with me or too much flattery! I actually quite enjoy the job for other reasons. It’s actually a bit of a pain when the kids get distracted by my handsomeness!
If they get too flirty I just tell them I’m a happily married man and if they don’t stop my wife will come into school and beat them up;)
If the Guy is the ‘Professor’ he appears to be a moron. If the allegations are untrue he could try and sue, but I doubt that would do much good.
