Seeing the New Year’s Sunrise from the Han River

by Robert Koehler on December 31, 2008

If you’d like to greet the first sunrise of the New Year from the Han River, you have two options:

  • There’s a cruise boat that leaves from Yeouido at 7am — the cruise will take about 700 people, so if you’re interested, it would be best to call first. You can take in the sunrise from in front of Nodeulseom Island as the sun rises above Mt. Cheonggyesan. In addition to the sunrise, the cruise will feature a balloon release and other events. Tel: (02) 3271-6900. Tickets are 20,000 won.
  • For something a bit more private, water taxis are offering a similar New Year’s course that departs from Yeouido at 7am. Boat fare is 250,000 won — each boat holds seven people, so it comes out to about 35,700 won a person. You have to make a reservation, though — call (02) 1588-3960.

Of course, if mountains are your thing, Mt. Achasan and Mt. Samgaksan are good places to see the sunrise, too — sunrise programs are held atop each peak, too. Mt. Namsan, Olympic Park and Haneul Park are reportedly good places, too.

PS: If you have any sunrise suggestions, either in Seoul or in the provinces, feel free to put them in the comments.

Geez, I can see my budget of 20,000W doesn’t even come close.

A mountain near the DMZ was the site of an awesome NY’s sunrise for me.

Some of us will be stumbling out of an establishment on the Hill, wishing we had sunglasses, as the back hole sun shines down.

One of these years I will attempt to relive a small portion of my 20′s and participate in the ‘west coast sunset – east coast sunrise’ derby.
