Korea to Get Own Smithsonian?

by Robert Koehler on December 26, 2008

The government has decided to re-push a plan to build a National Museum of Natural History, a plan that’s been floating around in one form or another since 1995.

One natural history museum does not a Smithsonian make. The writer of the story is apparently unaware that the Smithsonian is comprised of 14 different museums of art, history, air and space, and other collections. I wonder if admission to this planned museum will, like the Smithsonian, be free.

I remember going to the Smithsonian (for just a day, alas) and, well, it was overwhelming. As we sat in one of the cafeterias a helicopter lowered a piece of sculpture. Awesome. Need to spend at least a week there sometime.

#1,

Sonagi, don’t forget who the writer’s imagined reader was…most likely someone who knows a lot less about the Smithsonian than you do…Someone who will be more than happy to pay the inflated entrance fees to visit the ‘Korean Smithsonian’ with his or her kids.

What are they going to put in it? They just don’t have the goods.

Replicas. Even some of the Smithsonian displays are fakes.
